Improper use of your report

Credit reporting, credit repair services, or other personal consumer reports: Credit reporting

Reporting company used your report improperly
Complaint: Equifax mishandled my information which has led to a breach that puts myself and millions of others at potential risk. I am extremely disappointed with how Equifax has handled reporting this breach. Very little was done to notify the public for nearly a month after the breach was detected. I received no email, letter, or phone call and instead had to discover it via social media. Going forward Equifax should be required to monitor every account and notify victims if any fraud occurs. Credit fraud protection should be mandatory for every account, not an option for us to have deal with.

Credit monitoring or identity theft protection services

Credit reporting, credit repair services, or other personal consumer reports: Credit reporting

Problem with product or service terms changing
Complaint: I am writing to express my outrage not just at the recent security breach at Equifax, but about the criminal situation in the credit bureau business as a whole. Why is there still no government oversight or regulation of an industry that controls the personal data of nearly every American without their choice or input? Credit bureaus have been uncooperative players and effectively anti-consumer for years. Everyone has stories of how difficult it is to correct a credit report that has somehow become inaccurate. And once identity theft became an issue, they all have made billions by selling identity protection. In the wake of the security breach they have redoubled those profit making efforts at the expense of their own customers. The situation ( at Equifax at least ) is evolving due to the public outcry, and they are now offering a free credit freeze, but only for 30 days! They are also exploring multi-bureau locks across the three major bureaus. Note that they never mentioned these services before the breach ; note also that there is an additional fee to unfreeze your credit report. However, I have no doubt that the charges will return very quickly ( XXXX and XXXX have not offered a free freeze at all, and XXXX doesnt even mention the price before your credit card is charged ), and the fees mount up rapidly. Prior to the recent data breach, freezing credit at all 3 bureaus using the product they recommend would cost approximately {$20.00} per month, per bureau, per person. There are no family discounts. Thats {$60.00} a month for protecting information it is their business to protect! That means that for my wife, my XXXX-year-old mother, and me fees would total {$2100.00} annually for full protection. Sound familiar? It should, because organized crime has run protection rackets for years, and the credit bureaus are in the same business. We have your information, well give you very limited access, your livelihood and credit rating depends on it, and, oh, by the way, if you want to keep that information really safe ( wink, wink ) that will be {$20.00} per month per person. Anywhere else, that situation would be called EXTORTION.

Improper use of your report

Credit reporting, credit repair services, or other personal consumer reports: Credit reporting

Reporting company used your report improperly
Complaint: I 've discovered I was affected by the Equifax data breach that was reported last week. I could n't tell you exactly what was leaked because they have n't deigned to own up to any of their egregious mishandling of my personal information. No call. No letter. I had to check a buggy website of theirs that froze constantly and simply told me I was affected, not much else aside from the option to sign up for a service. I tried to obtain a copy of my credit report from the annualcreditreport.gov website but it only showed me one companies report and then reported an error. I was able to submit a comment about that and heard nothing back. That 's all I can do it feels like, leave meaningless comments. I had no choice when it came to Equifax collecting my information. Why are we consumers at the mercy of a huge unseeing uncaring conglomerate when it comes to the handling of our information? The fact that this breach occurred in the beginning of XXXX and Equifax delayed informing the public a whole month so the senior executives could sell off shares in the company is just despicable. Legal consequences and reform are sorely needed here. I feel utterly powerless in this situation. How can I protect myself for identity theft at this point?

Improper use of your report

Credit reporting, credit repair services, or other personal consumer reports: Credit reporting

Reporting company used your report improperly
Complaint: Between XXXX and XXXX 2017, Equifax was hacked for over 140,000,000 credit reports. These reports included social security numbers and birth dates, everything needed for successful identity theft. This can have enormous repercussions if this data are ever used to forge my identity, and I must protect myself accordingly. Given the size of the US population and the number of individuals with credit information, it is highly likely that my identity was compromised in this hack. This high probability mandates that I act as if my information was stolen due to the negligence of Equifax in storing my information in an insecure manner. They should not have disclosed my information ( knowingly or unknowingly ) to anyone but me. This data will be in the hands of those who stole it for the rest of my life. Given that my social security and birth date will not change ever, this puts me at risk for identity theft for the rest of my life. In order to protect my identity for the rest of my life, I need to purchase ID surveillance software in perpetuity. The cost of standard packages is $ XXXX/month. Given that I am XXXX years and XXXX months old, and the social security administration estimates my lifespan at 82.2 years, this means I will need to pay for this service for an expected 54.7 years, which is a total of {$13000.00}. I would like this money given to me now to compensate for this negligent improper use of my financial and credit information.
