Complaint: I owed Discover Card money and I was having difficulty paying my bills. I was able to pay every month but sometimes it was not the required amount. In XXXX, I paid after speaking with XXXX of their representatives, however, I received a phone call 5 days later to pay the money owned. I find this to be annoying and I stated to Discover Card that nothing miraculous happened in the five days since I paid. I did not get a job or win the lottery. I thought this was harassment and I requested no phone calls. The same thing happened in XXXX and I had to call again about no phone calls and I was told that it was not documented when I called in XXXX. I was told the phone call restriction was put on now. I realized that Discover was not honoring requests for no phone calls.
Since I was on the phone with Discover, I said I had some money and would like to settle the account and get it off my desk. I was given a settlement for {$800.00} due by XXXX XXXX. I did not have all the money but said I would work on borrowing from my sons because I wanted to finish up with Discover and I could not see any positive changes coming up in my financial situation. I asked for the offer in writing. I asked if I could send a money order and was told " no '', it had to be done electronically. I gave the representative my friend 's fax number and said I would call up and pay as soon as I had the money, if I was able to borrow it, and complete the transaction. I received the fax that day, and obtained the money by the end of the week. I went to my bank ( XXXX ) and deposited the cash on Saturday. I called my bank today and the cash was available and I called Discover Card. I was told that I did not have to call because the payment of {$800.00} was already set up with my bank account at XXXX XXXX. I did not give the authorization for the money to come out a bank account that I used before with Discover. I was using a different bank account to make the settlement payment. I was furious that Discover took it upon themselves to set up this payment at XXXX XXXX without my authority and it very well would interfere with other things I was paying. I asked for a supervisor. XXXX came on and said she was going to listen to the tapes to verify that i authorized them to automatically take out the payment. I said there was no way I authorized it because at the time of that phone call I did not have all the funds and was unsure if I would have them by the end of the month. I called back and spoke to supervisor and was given an " I 'm sorry '' but that was it. I did find out that the team gets some type of credit if they collect and I think this may be an incentive for aggressive tactics. However, setting up a payment without customer 's authorization is wrong. I feel vulnerable since I have used the XXXX XXXX account to pay online and over the phone and this information has remained with them. I probably should close out the XXXX XXXX account but I have other bills going through it and they have not yet been processed. This leaves me in a very uncomfortable situation and I do not see how this can be legal. Thank you.

Complaint: My son is a college student who acquired a credit card with Discover about a year ago. He attended a wedding ( out of town ) on XXXX XXXX. He had told me then that he would not be able to make the credit card payment on time. He really struggles to make his payments on time. I had no money so I advised him to pay it late as he always pays in a timely manner. On XXXX XXXX at XXXX my phone rings. Caller id discloses it is Discover Financial I do not answer. At XXXX the phone rings again. Discover Financial so I answer. The woman asks to speak with my son. I tell her he is a college student and is not home. Well she says she can speak with me, am I his spouse? No I answer, I am his mother. Well she says he is probably at work so what time can she reach him? I again explain he is in college and does not live here. I also ask her why she is calling me at XXXX as I am aware she is calling about his unpaid bill. How late is it I ask two or three days? I found out later from my son payment was 5 days late at that point and these people were calling at XXXX about it. I also inform the rep that I believe it is illegal for them to call me before XXXX. She assures me they start working at XXXX so it is OK. She understands how I feel! No I told her, not really - you issue credit cards to college students who struggle to pay them on time and then you call and harass them for money when they are two or three days late on their payments. I told her if she really understood how I feel she would leave the building because I felt like dropping a bomb on it! I also asked her to stop calling my phone as I pay the bill and my son lives at XXXX University. My son later also told me they have his cell phone number but never call it. The rep told me they have no other way of contacting him except my phone number. I replied " well you have plenty of time to call me at XXXX maybe you can use some of that time to hunt him down! ''

Can't get flexible payment options
Complaint: This is my XXXX time contacting the CFPB with a complaint concerning Discover Student Loans. I am a week or so away from having my loan charged-off.
Me and a co-worker/counselor have called in every month to do our due dilligence on what programs may be available through Discover to fit my budget an afford payments. Discover has offered payments of X, Y, & Z to which none are affordable.
I received this e-mail today from the Director of Operations at Discover Student Loans ; '' Dear XXXX, If you are having difficulty making your monthly payments, we have options to help you temporarily manage your student loan. Please call us at XXXX. We have a repayment option you may be able to take advantage of over the phone.
& XXXX XXXX to XXXX EST, Monday through Friday ; or XXXX to XXXX EST, Saturday XXXX to XXXX EST, SundayThis option will only be available to you for a short time, so please contact us as soon as possible.
Sincerely, XXXX XXXXDirector of OperationsDiscover Student LoansPhone : XXXXXXXXThis is an attempt to collect a debt and any information obtained may be used for that purpose. " We had called in three days prior to listen to options, which ended up being the same, and when receiving this e-mail, thinking something new might be out there.
So, naturally, we called in to check on what options thinking that my loans may have reached a status where something new could be arranged, and when we call in, we are offered the same plans that have been affordable the previous four months.
Discover sent an e-mail with false hope that I 'd be able to re-pay my debts and arrange something to prevent further trouble, but come to find out, we wasted our time listening to the same garbage we 've been fed.

Complaint: Discover Financial Services has an 10 % Cashback Bonus when discover card is used to pay using XXXX for in-store purchases. When I tried to use the eligible card at an XXXX XXXX XXXX store, the charge got declined. When I called Discover customer service, they advised me to use physical card instead and then call customer service to get the 10 % Cashback bonus. I did just that!
However, later when I called them they to refused to honor the promise and only offered XXXX points as a courtesy ( equivalent of {$10.00} ). The 10 % cashback bonus on that purchase would have been {$40.00} dollars.

Complaint: Discover Card advertised to customers that they would provide a 10 % cashback if consumers added their cards to XXXX and used it through the end of 2015. They did not list any exclusions on products that could be purchased in the terms that were provided to customers, but are now claiming that they are excluding gift cards and are refusing to honor the original terms that they provided. Even after emailing Discover Card to ask them to honor the original terms, giving them an opportunity to correct this blatant false advertising and deception of customers, they refused.
These were the original terms : '' Earn an extra 10 % Cashback Bonus on up to {$10000.00} of in-store purchases when you use your Discover card with XXXX now through XXXX XXXX, 2015. Rewards earned are in addition to your standard rewards and are added to your Cashback Bonus account within XXXX billing periods. " Discover, after the effective date of this offer, and without contacting customers, changed their website to a different set of terms to add this exclusion after having promoted the original ones : '' Earn an extra 10 % Cashback Bonus on up to {$10000.00} of in-store purchases when you use your Discover card with XXXX now through XXXX/XXXX/15. Excludes gift card purchases. ''

Complaint: Discover promised a 10 % cashback on up to {$10000.00} worth of in store XXXX purchases.
I made those purchases, but I am receiving a email accusing me of spending on non qualified gift cards. ( As a side note, they added that clause after the promo was out ... ) 1 Its my privacy, they have no business what I purchase2 Just because I bought expensive XXXX products, does n't mean it 's a gift card.
I have a friend who bought a XXXX at XXXX, its a high dollar amount, so they accused him of a gift card purchase.
Not right. Intrusion of privacy. And just bad for a credit card company who we trust with so much information, to demand even more information, and to lie about their public promos.
I want my 10 % cashback, and I want it doubled at years end just like their promo says!

Complaint: Applied for a Discover bank savings account through a promotional offer for {$100.00} bonus ( XXXX ) After all requirements were fullfilled, no communication from Discover, no bonus credited.
Called 3 times to resolve, finally they claimed that the offer expired before I opened the account which was clearly not the case as listed on their own webpage.
Discover refused to switch to another promotion by saying that new promotions are only for new customers so I would no longer qualify.

I am a new father and have even taken on a XXXX job to try and make ends meet. Discover let me pay a reduced payment of $ XXXX/month that was just doable for me. Now I am out of options. The only option now, it seems, according to Discover, is to default, which I do not want. Can't get flexible payment options
Complaint: I attempted to consolidate my loans with a single provider to better manage my payments. Without my permission or consent, Discover withheld the loan they service from the consolidation. I am now facing hardship making my payments, and Discover has offered no recourse. I am frustrated that when I tried to consolidate my loan away from them, they took advantage of a loophole to avoid accepting payment from my consolidation loan provider and continue to hold my loan despite my wish to consolidate. Discover did this without my consent, and now I have learned that in order to include this loan in the consolidation, I must reapply for a consolidation and begin the whole process again from the beginning! It 's doubly frustrating because I never chose to do business with Discover in the first place ; they bought my loan from XXXX, and have now bullied me into keeping my loan with them. I do not understand how they were able to withhold my loan from the consolidation and think it is unfair that I have to pay the consequences of their predatory actions. I wish for Discover to cooperate with me in my attempt to consolidate my loan with XXXX.

Can't get flexible payment options
Complaint: University XXXX , CTXX/XX/XXXX Discover Student Loans verbally harassed and disrespected me. They called me at inappropriate times, they hung up the phone on me, they stole money from me, they gave me the run around, they reported my loan to collections. XX/XX/XXXX they overcharged me on student loan payments. The charged me late fees when I was n't even making any real money. I signed up for an Income based repayment plan and they took out more money than was authorized out of my account. They did this multiple times. I had to wait a week just to call Discover Student Loans to find out they did n't even start the refund process even though they said they would. I ended up waiting an additional 2 weeks for XXXX refund. They stole more money out of my account a second time and I had to wait another 2 weeks for a XXXX refund. They never gave me a fair chance at paying off my student loan. I have complained numerous times XX/XX/XXXX and here we are XX/XX/XXXX with no help. The loan accumulated interest and got sent to a collection agency/lawyer. Discover Student Loans treated me like I was n't even a human being. I have never felt so disrespected in my life. I think I got harassed because I do n't have a white sounding last name, or because Discover Student Loans has a history of illegal practices.
