Charged too much interest
Complaint: American Express promised that they would give me an explanation on how they came to their interest total, and yet they did n't tell the truth and sent a letter that just explained they were correct and that I 'm supposed to look at the Cardmember Agreement. They actually stated to me that they 'd provide me with a detailed account on a daily basis as to how they got {$53.00}. This letter is exactly what I had asked them not to send. I 'm frustrated with this bank and they should be absolutely investigated for racketeering. Here 's the breakdown of my calculations. The cycle in question was between XX/XX/XXXX and XX/XX/XXXX. The Purchase Balance is in a promotional state until late XX/XX/XXXX, so 0 % interest is applied until then, so that wo n't be listed. The Cash Advances Balance has a 26.24 % APR which comes to a .0719 % Daily Periodic Rate. The Balance at the beginning of the cycle for Cash Advances was {$2300.00}. On XX/XX/XXXX, a total payment was made in the amount of {$350.00}. The minimum payment due was {$210.00}. {$210.00} SHOULD HAVE gone to the Purchases Balance where a remaining {$140.00} should have gone to the Cash Advances Balance. As of XX/XX/XXXX, the Cash Advances Balance ( as a result of the payment ) became {$2200.00}. {$270.00} was the total Cash Advances Transaction amount for XX/XX/XXXX, a day later. The balance now became {$2400.00} for Cash Advances. On XX/XX/XXXX, the total Cash Advances Balance became {$2500.00} as a result of a Cash Advances Transaction total of {$25.00}. So, you have ... Cash Advances Balance from XX/XX/XXXX-XX/XX/XXXX : {$2300.00} for 8 days Cash Advances Balance on XX/XX/XXXX : {$2200.00} for 1 day Cash Advances Balance from XX/XX/XXXX-XX/XX/XXXX : {$2400.00} for 2 days Cash Advances Balance from XX/XX/XXXX-XX/XX/XXXX : {$2500.00} for 19 days You add these balances up to get a sum of {$73000.00}. Divide that sum by the number of days in the cycle ( 30 ) to get an Average Daily Balance for Cash Advances of {$2400.00}. Take the Average Daily Balance {$2400.00} multiplied by the APR ( 26.24 % ) to get {$640.00}. Divide {$640.00} by 365 ( days per year ) to get a daily interest charge of {$1.00}. Multiply {$1.00} by the number of days in the cycle ( 30 ), to get a total interest charge of {$53.00}. Their interest total was {$53.00}, a XXXX cent overcharge.

Credit card company isn't resolving a dispute about a purchase on your statement
Complaint: XXXX - XXXX XXXX XXXX - charged my American Express credit card in error on XXXX XXXX , 2017, at XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX . They immediately acknowledged their error and promised to reverse the charge. However, when I returned from travel in XXXX , in early XXXX of this year, the erroneous charge appeared on my American Express statement. I promptly disputed the charge, opening a case with AMEX, and also did the same with XXXX . XXXX responded promptly and courteously, investigating it and advising that they had contacted AMEX and authorized the credit card company to charge back XXXX for the amount of {$490.00} ; XXXX advised me that it had accepted the AMEX chargeback on XXXX XXXX 2017 ; they provided reference numbers for that exchange with AMEX. However, AMEX not only failed to clear the disputed charge from my statement, they actually closed out their original dispute investigation on the matter ( # XXXX ), and sent me a letter dated XX/XX/XXXX stating that they were reinstating the {$490.00}. claim to my account. I immediately called AMEX, and they re-opened the dispute with a new reference number, XXXX , and asked me to re-submit my information by mail. This was done on XXXX XXXX , 2017, with copies of all relevant documents, including the emails from XXXX Customer Care that confirmed the AMEX chargeback against them. I also uploaded all relevant documents to the AMEX site as instructed by them, at americanexpress.com/docupload.
To date, I have received no acknowledgement from AMEX about the fact that they have been made whole by XXXX and that therefore no charge is outstanding. Meanwhile, XXXX has been prompt to respond to my follow-up questions ; their Customer Care person XXXX XXXX had made every effort to provide me the reference data regarding their resolution of the charge. XXXX ' case number for this matter is XXXX . Meanwhile, I continue to be harassed by AMEX statements reflecting the {$490.00}. outstanding charge. Transaction was not authorized
Complaint: On XXXX XXXX, 2017, I inquired online to get interest rates and yields for 5 ( 12-60 months ) staggered American Express Certificate of Deposits. They asked me to log into my Personal Savings Account with them, and select CDs ( 12-month, 24-month, etc. ) that I wanted to learn about, prompting me several times to select the button " Next '', without giving me the information I was seeking. I got tired and suspicious and, so, I closed my login and the web-browser. Later, I went to their competitor, XXXX XXXX website. Their interest rates and yields were clearly and transparently displayed on their website, and considerably higher than those of American Express Bank and, so, I opened an account with them, selected CDs, and for funding I referred them to my Personal Savings account with American Express. They deposited nominal ( small ) amounts into my account, and asked me to log into my account, and report back to verify. When I logged back into my American Express savings account, I was horrified that they had already withdrawn the entire amount for five CDs from my account. I instantly called their customer service operator and supervisor who told me that it was a " done deal '', I had " bought '' those CDs, and I could pay pre-mature interest penalty and cancel this " sale '' but, otherwise, there was nothing they could do. I wrote a US Certified mail complaint of deceptive " sale '' by the bank ( with copies to Federal and State authorities, and FINRA ), and called back again when I was told that the account was locked by Banking Operations and that someone will get back to me within 7-10 days, but no one did. I wrote another letter, a few days later, when I received a pro forma reply essentially stating the above rule that I could cash these CDs, i.e., rescind this " sale '' after paying a pre-mature interest penalty.

Didn't receive advertised or promotional terms
Complaint: Hi, In XX/XX/2017 my husband referred me to open an AMEX SPG Business Card. Since I have a XXXX XXXX and own a XXXX XXXX I thought it could be a good idea to try to keep expenses separate. I used his link, applied and was approved for the card. The offer stated that I had 90 days to spend $ XXXX to receive XXXX SPG points. I received the card in XX/XX/XXXX and used it right away to pay some expenses. I spent $ XXXX by the middle of XX/XX/XXXX and waited for the points to post. Normally, bonus points post the next cycle. After not seeing them post, I called and inquired. They opened up a case and said it can take 6-8 weeks. I inquired every now and then via chat and was finally told in early XXXX that I was not eligible. I asked why and was told it was because I had the card before. I informed the customer service representative that I have the personal card and not the business card. I asked what date does it show me having the business card and he could n't tell me. He checked via my SSN number and agreed that I never had the card before. He said he would open a new case, but it should be resolved quickly. Thinking it would be quick I called a few times in XX/XX/XXXX. Last week I spoke to a supervisor. She told me that case is still open, but it would not go in my favor since my offer states a bonus is not available to those who had the same product. Again, I explained I have the personal card, but I never had the business version. She said they are the same and there was nothing she could do. To be honest, my husband and I love AMEX. I use the SPG cards and he does as well, along with his Blue Cash Preferred. Their customer service has been terrific except in this case. For some reason, they refuse to honor their agreement and provide the bonus SPG points.

Trouble closing card
Complaint: I got an American Express Server Prepaid Debit card based on the great things my husband said about them as an alternative to regular banking. I was planning to use it for some bill paying, and as a way to keep a little side savings account, with liquidity options in case an emergency might rise and I 'd need cash ( my bank has very small limits for our debit cards ). I 've seen my husband use his once when we were on vacation and wanted to buy some local crafts whose vendors would only accept cash, and he showed me how the Serve Card lets you withdraw {$750.00}, which is almost three times more than my bank debit card allows ( we live in a small town, and use a local independent bank, well, credit union really. I had n't used it that much, but began using it a few months ago, when, much to my surprise, they all of a sudden told me my card had been canceled, and not two days later my husband 's was canceled as well! He called American Express and spoke with someone, who told him that his card had possibly been involved in some fraudulent activity, and so his card had been shut off. He can describe it better, and he just submitted a claim for his card as well. I was too upset to call them, I had almost eighteen hundred dollars on that card! We had to borrow some money for our vacation last week due to the money that Amercan Express is withholding from us, and we most certainly did n't commit any fraudulent activiy with our usage of our cards! He ( my husband ) says we should contacty you and your agency to get help with at least getting our ending balances back. I 'd like them to re-instate my card also, how long does it take to find nothing? Sincerely, XXXX XXXX

Trouble closing card
Complaint: My issue is with American Express and their Serve Prepaid Debit card. Had the card for over 5 years, was using it regularly, had a portion of my pay direct deposited to it each pay period for 5 years. tried to log in one day approximately 5 weeks ago, was told the card had been suspended due to potential fraudulent activity. I said ok, could you please tell me what the fraud was about, as I never did anything illegal or against terms with the card, and more importantly, was I going to get my remaining balance, approximately {$220.00}, back. Was told they could n't provide any information regardign the " fraud '', and that it would take several weeks to resolvle, and that I 'd receive my funds once the investigation was complete. Called again a couple weeks later, same story. During that time I the portion of my pay, {$1200.00}, that normally went to the card from my pay went to some limbo, was able to get it back from my employer, but did n't get until 10 days later than I normally do. Was recommended by an attorney friend to contact CFPB office regarding this matter, as it 's been almost six weeks now and have n't heard anything else from them, and havent ' received my funds.

Unexpected increase in interest rate
Complaint: American Express increased my rate on my card ( a/c XXXX ) from the regular rate of 10.99 % to the default rate of 29.99 % due to a one-time, 2-day late payment. My understanding of the Credit Card Act 2009 ( Sec 171 ) is that default interest is supposed to only be charged after the payment is 60 days late. I believe that they are not acting within the Federal Laws applicable to the account.

Credit card company isn't resolving a dispute about a purchase on your statement
Complaint: On XX/XX/XXXX I was using American Express Travel website to book a hotel in a foreign country for a family holiday. I selected the XXXX XXXX XXXX. There was nothing stating on the website that this booking was " non-changeable or non-refundable ''. I mistakenly selected the dates of XX/XX/XXXX-XX/XX/XXXX instead of XX/XX/XXXX-XX/XX/XXXX. When I became aware of this mistake, I contacted American Express and Amex Travel in an attempt to modify these dates and after several days of back and forth I was told that the hotel refused to change the dates, refund my charge or remedy the situation in any way as they told me it was a non-refundable/non-changeable reservation. I went back to the website where I book the hotel and there was nothing on the main page ( as there was with other hotels on the Amex travel site ) stating these policies. I looked deeper and saw a hyperlink on the room details section in small letters stating " room restrictions and cancellation policy ''. When I clicked on this link I found where they had hidden and buried these important terms. Had this been up front on the main page, I never would have booked with this hotel. THESE ARE UNFAIR AND DECEPTIVE PRACTICES! I have attached the deceptive website pictures and descriptions from the AMERICAN EXPRESS TRAVEL website who participate in these deceptive tactics. I continued to dispute with both American Express and Amex Travel but apparently they care more about protecting a foreign deceptive hotel then a cardholder since XX/XX/XXXX.

Problem with rewards from credit card
Complaint: I signed up for a delta platinum credit card with a XXXX bonus skymiles offer. The terms of the offer were that I had to spend {$3000.00} in three months, pay a {$190.00} annual fee, and receive these miles. I spend {$3000.00}, some through merchants, and a portion by purchasing American Express Serve card loads. After completing the spending, I called customer service, and they told me the money was spent and I was set to receive the bonus miles on the next statement. I never received the points. I called customer service, was transferred around for hours with no resolution. They told me they would open a claim into these missing miles. I never heard back from American Express, so I called them six months later. They told me I was ineligible to receive these miles, since somewhere buried in the terms and conditions was a provision that spending money through serve was not counted as spending. My issues are 1 ) in the beginning, the agent told me I had met my requirements. Had she mentioned that the spending through serve did n't count, I would have found another way of meeting the spending. 2 ) When I called to ask why I did n't receive the points, I was still within the three month period. Had I been given a direct answer right away, I could have spent money in another fashion to meet the deadline. 3 ) They promised to get back to me and never did. 4 ) When I spoke to American Express 6 months later, they informed me why I was ineligible to receive the bonus. When I explained my grievances, they were cold and refused to honor my request or even give me some form of compensation. They even refused to refund my {$190.00} annual fee.

Charged too much interest
Complaint: American Express is overcharging interest on card accounts based on reflected calculations on my end. After noting the issue with the company, they did n't have much to say other than that they had to forward it as a billing inquiry.
After demanding answers as to why they claim that the Interest was actually incorrect ( they admitted to that ), I was given a credit of XXXX cents that they claimed was auto-generated by their computer system. The XXXX cent credit creates even more confusion.
Here 's the breakdown of my calculations.
The cycle in question was between XXXX XXXX, 2017 and XXXX XXXX, 2017.
The Purchase Balance is in a promotional state until late XXXX, so 0 % interest is applied until then, so that wo n't be listed.
The Cash Advances Balance has a 26.24 % APR which comes to a .0719 % Daily Periodic Rate.
The Balance at the beginning of the cycle for Cash Advances was {$2300.00}. On XXXX XXXX, a total payment was made in the amount of {$350.00}. The minimum payment due was {$210.00}. {$210.00} SHOULD HAVE gone to the Purchases Balance where a remaining {$140.00} should have gone to the Cash Advances Balance.
As of XXXX XXXX, the Cash Advances Balance ( as a result of the payment ) became {$2200.00}. {$270.00} was the total Cash Advances Transaction amount for XXXX XXXX, a day later. The balance now became {$2400.00} for Cash Advances. On XXXX XXXX the total Cash Advances Balance became {$2500.00} as a result of a Cash Advances Transaction total of {$25.00}.
So, you have ...
Cash Advances Balance from XXXX/XXXX/2017-XXXX/XXXX/2017 : {$2300.00} for 8 days Cash Advances Balance on XXXX/XXXX/2017 : {$2200.00} for 1 day Cash Advances Balance from XXXX/XXXX/2017-XXXX/XXXX/2017 : {$2400.00} for 2 days Cash Advances Balance from XXXX/XXXX/2017-XXXX/XXXX/2017 : {$2500.00} for 19 days You add these balances up to get a sum of {$73000.00}.
As I mentioned earlier, they credited my account XXXX cents which does n't make sense. It should 've been XXXX cents credited and retroactive on the account so it would n't begin charging interest on the amount that was overcharged.
