Getting a credit card

Credit card or prepaid card: General-purpose credit card or charge card

Card opened as result of identity theft or fraud
Complaint: I filed a complaint with the CFPB regarding Amex Served Prepaid Credit Card. I outlined that my identity was stolen and a card was requested in my maiden name. The theft had my SS #, DOB, and other sensitive information. The request was made from an email address that does not belong to me. I contacted Amex Served at ( XXXX ) XXXX where the overseas representatives did not understand the severity of what transpired or handled the identity theft with due diligence. I confirmed my SS #, DOB, etc. and asked to close the account and provide me something in writing that the matter was handled. Since XX/XX/2018, when I called XXXX times and was repeatedly hung up on after asking for confirmation, I never received anything in writing stating the Amex handled the matter. I then submitted a complaint to the CFPB ( CFPB Ref No : XXXX ) and the response I received was alarming! Not only did the Amex agent not address my complaint, they also provided me with the same phone number to close my account after I provide my SS #, DOB, etc.! This is information I provided 6 times on XX/XX/2018, to Amex served while letting them know my identity was stolen! Only to be repeatedly hung up on by overseas representatives! At one point, the representative told me he would send a confirmation to the fake email address where the thief requested a card in my name! Appalling! Not only do they not understand the context of the language they were going to commit additional violations. I want all my calls pulled for pending litigation. The response I received said they could not locate the calls. I do not believe that as each time I called in it said my calls were being recorded.! This is my final attempt to have Amex contact me via US representative of legal counsel to address the identity theft. If I do not receive a proper response, I will be seeking legal counsel to pursue any and all legal remedies to correct the actions of American Express Serve for the negligence in handling my identity theft complaint. Please refer to my previous complaint for additional information that occurred during my XXXX phone calls on XX/XX/2018, attempting to have this issue handled. I gave birth on XX/XX/2018, and the negligence of Amex has cause me emotion distress during the time I am bonding with my newborn. AGAIN! This is my finally attempt to properly resolve this matter as many FTC violations occurred with regards to identity theft and proper handling of this matter. If I do not receive a call or confirmation in writing by a UNITED STATES representative ( someone in a supervisory capacity or from Amexs legal office ) stating that my identity theft has been address and providing me with the information that was used to open an account in my name ) I WILL SEEK LEGAL ACTION!

Complaint: On XX/XX/2018, I made a call to XXXX XXXX and made a {$990.00} payment for my father 's account ( co # XXXX XXXX. The representative took my payment and said there may be a small sum left over. A week or so ago I am called back by XXXX XXXX asking if I could cover the remaining of the balance. I informed her that I was not the account holder, and that this was my cell phone number ; never provided or gave them authorization to call. She asked if I had another number so I could reach my parents. I provided it, and ended the call. The next day she called informing me that she was trying to collect the payment. Again, I informed her this wasn't my account and that she needed to call the number I provided. Mrs. XXXX advised that there was a note to not call the number I provided, and asked if I could get a message over to my parents to have them call.

Advertising and marketing, including promotional offers

Credit card or prepaid card: General-purpose credit card or charge card

Didn't receive advertised or promotional terms
Complaint: Dear American Express, This complaint is relative to a public welcome offer listed on the American Express Surpass XXXX offer that advertises a free weekend night after the first anniversary of card membership. The offer also includes a XXXX XXXX XXXX bonus points after spending {$3000.00} in purchases within the first 3 months of card membership. While the spending requirement has been met and the XXXX XXXX XXXX bonus points received, I have yet to receive my weekend night certificate upon my annual membership date ( XX/XX/XXXX ) or payment of my annual fee, even within the generous 6 - 8 week window listed in the terms and conditions of the offer. I have contacted American Express through the websites chat and was unable to find resolution to this issue. I first contacted XXXX who then forwarded me to XXXX. Our main point of contention can be summarized as the following : There was a free night certificate for the XXXX surpass card but on the XX/XX/XXXX, we changed the terms of card as we changed the name from XXXX Surpass to XXXX Ascend. A condition was added that the Card member needs to spend {$15000.00} in a calendar year to earn that free night certificate. Hence, the Card member 's whose anniversary date was after XX/XX/XXXX will only get the free night once the spending is met on the account. I disagree and here are the reasons why this argument does not hold : 1. I mentioned that if I were to apply for an AMEX card with a signup bonus today and tomorrow AMEX immediately pulls the offer, changes the card slightly, and removes the welcome language from any offer terms and conditions, would I be grandfathered into the new terms and no longer be eligible for the bonus? In response, XXXX states that The card is eligible for the welcome bonus which it is linked with and I agree. The weekend annual night certificate was included as a special welcome bonus and NOT as a traditional feature of the Surpass card. Yet, she contradicts herself by saying, A condition was added that the Card member needs to spend {$15000.00} in a calendar year to earn that free night certificate. Hence, the Card member 's whose anniversary date was after XX/XX/XXXX will only get the free night once the spending is met on the account. 2. She argues that the Ascends universal feature of awarding an annual weekend night certificate after {$15000.00} of calendar year spend is a valid substitute of the one-time annual weekend certificate from Surpass limited welcome bonus offer. She makes no distinction between the Ascend or Surpass weekend night certificates regardless of why or how they are awarded. On the other hand, opening a Surpass with a welcome offer but completing the requirements shortly after the change to Ascend still satisfies the opening bonus, but XXXX insists each certificate is now mutually exclusive to each card. Still, there are counterexamples from XXXX users who could secure both during the start of the Ascend. If Shannons logic were to hold and instead the Ascend card offered no annual certificate for {$15000.00} calendar year spend or at the very least some incentive other than an annual night certificate ( {$100.00} statement credit, XXXX points, etc. ), then the Surpass annual free night certificate would have clearly been awarded on account anniversary. She makes no distinctions between annual night certificates, despite one being a unique welcome offer and the other a general feature of the card. 3. XXXX mentions, American Express reserves the right to modify or revoke offer at any time. I am sure there are certain boundaries in which AMEX can enforce this without any form of repercussions, though in this case it would be certainly a disingenuous and silly mechanism to avoid upholding its end of the bargain for what should have been an extremely simple case and resolution. The account has been in good standing, does not involve fraudulent activity, and only needed to be open for one year. In return, all AMEX needed to do was award just a single ( 1 ) weekend night certificate. I fail to see how refreshing a card or changing its name somehow justifies invalidating the weekend certificate bonus requirement that an account be open for one ( 1 ) year.

Card opened as result of identity theft or fraud
Complaint: American Express has been trying to collect a fraudulent debt for several years now for an account that was opened while I was a minor. I have since tried to dispute this account with them, however, they will not give me any information because I do not know the date of birth or social security number associated with this account. They had stopped sending me letters after I disputed the information with the credit bureaus. However, they sent me a new letter dated XX/XX/2018 stating that they transferred the account for collection. The problem is that this is not my account. It was fraudulently opened while I was a minor, and I can not access the account because I do not know the information used to open the account. The only information I have access to is what comes on the collection letters. this is the last five numbers of the account and balance due.

Improper use of your report

Credit reporting, credit repair services, or other personal consumer reports: Credit reporting

Reporting company used your report improperly
Complaint: My ex-husband and I owned a business together. We had an XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX card. Our company was struggling due to divorce and a difficult economy. We fell behind on payments. As we were trying to recover and restructure, rather than go bankrupt, I contacted companies that my business was indebted to and negotiated payoffs. When I contacted American Express and negotiated a payoff for the company, they accepted the payoff and we paid it immediately. We had this card for more than 17 years ; we closed the account in XX/XX/2015 but we kept paying on the card. Never before had this company reported on my PERSONAL CREDIT REPORT. So all of sudden, the account was paid off and XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX shows up on my PERSONAL CREDIT REPORT a month ago showing the last 6 months. Never did they tell me that they were going to report this activity to on my PERSONAL CREDIT REPORT. They just took the liberty of doing so. I wouldn't have an issue if they reported this activity on our company 's credit report given it was a company account but not on my personal! I have worked hard to maintain my personal credit report in excellent standing. I consider what American Express has done to be unethical and inappropriate ; and I want this reporting removed off my personal.

Unexpected or other fees

Credit card or prepaid card: General-purpose prepaid card

Complaint: On XX/XX/2018, I received a text message from " american express serve '' prepaid card, whom I've had a account with for quite some time. It was a possible fraud alert, asking if I had charged XXXX $ to a target store in Florida. I replied immediately " 2 '' which was the selection for " no it was not me ''. At the time I was in XXXX XXXX, Ca, at my job. I tried to log into my account, but neither my password nor email was being recognized. So I called the number the text message had provided and had to answer a bunch of security questions, because they ended up somehow changing my email. After proving it was actually me. Also, at this time I found that altogether, they charged {$1000.00} 3 different times, and then another charge for {$200.00}. They didn't even send out the fraud alert until after those 4 charges where made when they tried to do a 5th charge of XXXX and it got denied at the store. On the phone, they told me I needed to wait until the charges changed from pending, to completed in order for the 7-10 day investigation to start, to which the phone representative " promised '' I would without a doubt get my funds back. The next day came, and the charges had completed, and I called back to have the investigation opened. I called to do that around XXXX on XX/XX/XXXX. At around XXXX I received a email saying that my dispute had been declined and that I won't be receiving my funds back because their investigation team " came to the conclusion that I had authorized the transactions ''. Immediately after that email, I received another email saying that they closed my account. I then proceeded to call, had to go home from work because of being on the phone for hours and hours, to them telling me the same thing over and over. They wouldn't give me any information whatsoever, hung up on me a few times after being on hold for an hour or so, or after talking with them for hours. They said if I want to know why they came to that conclusion I would have to write a letter to a specific address, and ask for why they made that decision. I did that, have proof of the letter, and of them receiving the letter, and it's been almost a month and a half and I haven't heard a thing. I've also filed a police report and have the case number : XXXX with the XXXX XXXX county sheriff. XXXX is pointing the finger at my financial institute, and my financial institute won't give me any information whatsoever. End up hanging up on me the majority of the time.So now I am out {$3200.00} and don't even know WHY it is that they won't give me my money. I've looked it up online, and found an overwhelming amount of people detailing pretty much the exact same scenario, and have the exact same results, being either hung up on, told nothing, and requesting for why they came to the decision and never hearing back. These charges took place in a state that's quite literally across the country from me, a state I've never been to, a state that I don't know anyone who lives in, and making charges to the amounts I've never even made. I've never even made a XXXX $ charge with my card, let alone a {$1000.00} charge. I keep getting hung up on, they never tried to contact target and get me my money back, made me wait until the charges cleared to even try to open a investigation, and the investigation which should've took 7-10 business days, took about 2 hours and they've been withholding the information even though I've taken all the necessary steps to receive that information.

Getting a credit card

Credit card or prepaid card: General-purpose credit card or charge card

Card opened as result of identity theft or fraud
Complaint: On Monday,XX/XX/XXXX, I telephoned American Express at the number on the back of my card ( XXXX ) to redeem earned cash rewards. The person I spoke with credited my account for the earned cash rewards and encouraged me to upgrade my XXXX XXXX XXXX card ( no annual fee ) to their XXXX XXXX XXXX card ( {$95.00} annual fee ). I told the person I needed to confirm that the enhanced benefits on the new card would more than offset the annual fee. He told me for XX/XX/XXXX calendar year, I charged {$4900.00} at supermarkets, {$6000.00} at gas stations and {$180.00} at department stores. He did the math and confirmed the added benefits more than offset the new annual fee. In addition, I would be given a {$150.00} credit for {$1000.00} in purchases in the first 3 months. It all sounded pretty good, so I said sign me up.Later that night I thought his XX/XX/XXXX spending figures sounded high so I checked my XX/XX/XXXX statements fromXX/XX/XXXX through XX/XX/XXXX. For those 6 months, I averaged $ XXXX/month for groceries and $ XXXX/month for gas ( both typical for the year ). The figures that he provided to convince me to switch to the annual fee card were approximately 2.3 more for groceries and 2.8 more for gas than I spent in the 6 months of statements I reviewed, and I'm certain are typical of the entire year.

Complaint: Gold Delta SkyMiles Credit Card made the following advertisement offer to me : " For a limited time, earn XXXX bonus miles after you spend {$3000.00} or more in purchases with your new Card within the first 4 months of Card Membership. '' I applied for Gold Delta SkyMiles Credit Card in XX/XX/XXXX and American Express approved my application. However I have not received the credit card for which I applied for until XX/XX/XXXX. In XX/XX/XXXX, XX/XX/XXXX I repeatedly called American Express and informed them that I have not received the credit card from them. During each phone call they verified my name and address and promised to sent me a new card, but no cards arrived in my mailbox. Finally, I wrote American Express a letter and informed them that I never received a card from them and several months after I mailed them a letter I finally received their card in XX/XX/XXXX. However, the Gold Delta SkyMiles Credit Card was delivered to me more than four months after I was approved for the card and I was not able to make any purchases on the card until I received it. Now American Express claims that I am not eligible to receive the XXXX bonus miles since I have not made the required purchases within the first 4 months of card membership. I explained to them that due to their inability to deliver the card to me on time I was not able to make any purchases on my account until XX/XX/XXXX and asked them to extend the period in which I can make the purchases to receive the miles advertised under their offer. American Express representatives I spoke to have not made any attempts to resolve the issue nor were they able to find a person who is able to resolve the issue and call me back. I understand that technical issues sometime prevent American Express from fulfilling the promises they make in their advertisements, however the fact that they are not able and/or not willing to correct their errors suggests that it is American Express ' intended practice to delay the issuance of credit cards in order to avoid fulfilling their advertised promises.
