Can't get other flexible options for repaying your loan
Complaint: I have taken out fou r loans via Sallie Mae to pay for my college tuition. I have made on time monthly payments consistently but in the current state I am in now, I can not financially make the monthly payments .I took out an excess of {$55000.00} and my loans are currently holding interest rates of 11.375 %, 9.5 %, 10 %, and 9.75 %. I have contacte d Sallie Mae 's customer service desk to see if I can have my interest rates reduced and they stated I must go into collections in order to receive any type of help for repayment options. Once I went into collections, I received 4 to 5 calls per day from an automated service stating I am past due and need to contact the collections department. Once I called the collections department I got the run around and was told I had to pay my account up to date in order to receive any type of assistance and could only offer a forbearance for my current financial difficulties. The representative, XXXX ID : XXXX , I spoke with put me on hold and forgot to mute herself. I heard her speak with her supervisor and I heard laughter once the representative I spoke with asked her supervisor if they could offer me an interest rate reduction. Before the representative got back on the phone I heard her chuckle and say " I am going to get him to pay before we are done ''. The level in which they treat customers has completely disgusted me and I still have been unable to receive any type of assistance and currently struggling to meet ends meet.

Complaint: On XXXX XXXX around XXXX EST, I calle d Sallie Mae customer support in regards to potentially reducing my monthly student loan payments due to financial difficulty. Initially I was offered to put up t o 3 loans on forbearance for up to 3 months at a time each . As I informed the customer support contact, such a method is temporary, limited, and not substantially helpful. I asked for a more effective method to lower my monthly payments. After some time on hold, I was informed of a rate reduction plan available only to those who have missed have a payment, known as " delinquent ''. I then asked why I can not enroll/apply for this program now instead of after missing a payment. I was told that only the collection department can do assist with that and they will ONLY contact me 5 days after my first missed payment. They will not help me because my account is " current '' for paying my student loan bills on time. The burden of student debt has been especially crippling after college graduation and some relief or assistance would be incredibly appreciated.

Can't temporarily delay making payments
Complaint: I really just had a question to whether I was being mislead or was it legal. I filed bankruptcy in XXXX XXXX . I soon received a letter from sallie mae saying that I was in default of my loan. I told them that my loan was in deferment. They told me that when you file bankrupt the promissory note was no good. I asked for a copy of the promissory note because I could n't print it. They locked me out of my account because they said I did n't have access since I filed bankruptcy. I asked them can I get someone else to buy the loan they said no because I defaulted. I called my bankruptcy lawyer, he asked for a copy of the promissory note, I told him I could n't get it. He told me that the best thing to do was she what type of payment plan they have because I am responsible, in which I knew this. Sallie mae told me I had to pay XXXX dollar down by XXXX XXXX XXXX and thereafter XXXX and it had to be automatic withdrawal. The contract ends every two year s and you have to renew it. So in XXXX XXXX , I noticed the money was still on the card so I called to see why they have n't took the payment, I was told that I did n't renew the contract. I told them no one informed me that it had to be renewed every two years . They told me a guy supposed to had called. I have n't received no calls but anyway, I just wanted to know can they do that. I was also told that default would be on my credit for at least 10years. That i s n't fair, just because you file bankrupt does n't mean that should go on your credit especially if I 'm paying in a timely manner as agreed. Also why is my account still lock?

Can't get other flexible options for repaying your loan
Complaint: I have a private loan with sallie mae. I fell behind because I lost my temp contract job. When I initially called to explore options, they wanted me to pay {$50.00} for forbearance application. I explained that I did n't have {$50.00}. They told me to borrow the money or they ca n't help. Since then I paid {$600.00} and then called again to explain that my temp job ended ahead of time. They keep harrassing the cosigner despite being told that the cosigner is XXXX and had no source of income. In an effort to get them to stop the harrassing, I asked them to call me rather than the cosigner. When they refused, I told them not to add my number to the system. They refused and now they 're also harrassing me. I ca n't make payment without a source of income. I also have loans with other companies who have been more understanding than this greedy company without any compassion whatsoever. I gladly pay my monthly bill when I was working . 2 yrs wi th no problems. They 're welcome to keep harrassing me but the fact is they wo n't be getting payment until I have a steady job. Threatening to ruin my credit history was also a nice touch. I just want them to stop calling my mother all the XXXX time.

Can't get other flexible options for repaying your loan
Complaint: Hi, I 'm XXXX XXXX a college graduate in XXXX , AZ. I started college at XXXX with no real knowledge of student loans or how it works. My school told me that sallie mae was about the only option I had for payment. So I went with it. Everything seemed golden until I graduated college and it was time to pay it back. I have {$58000.00} in loans fro m Sallie Mae which with interest is at over $ 75,000+ I cu rrently work at XXXX XXXX making just about {$30000.00} a year. The enormous monthly expense of {$780.00} a month is impossible for me to pay. I have had no luck with sallie mae being willing to assist me on this matter, by either helping reduce my interest, consolidating my loans, extending my loan life to render smaller payments, and even declining forbearance while still being within their policy limit. So essentially I have this heavy life ending debt hanging over me with no option but to default and essentially ruin my financial future. It 's a shame how we go to school in want for an education only to end up worse off than those who do n't even go to college. Something 's got to give ...

Received bad information about your loan
Complaint: This complaint is in response to another complaint I filed previously in that Sallie Mae r efused to give me information about my cosigner release., this is NOT a duplicate complaint. The first complaint got me that information now I am filing this complaint in that I think that Sallie Mae 's P olicy on debt to income ratio is calculated incorrectly. They are currently telling me that they calculate my debt to income ratio by taking my full loan amount and d ivide it by one ye ar of my income. Now the reason I am questioning this policy is that with every other loan I 've ever dealt with the debt to income ratio is calculated by taking the full loan amount and dividing it by my income for the life of the loan or by taking the monthly loan payment and dividing it by my monthly gross income. When I questioned Sallie Mae abo ut this they stated that is not how they do it without giving any more reason than that. I think that without being able to legally prove their policy on debt to income ratio, or provide any paperwork showing I agreed to it, that they need to calculate debt to income in the same manner that the rest of financial institutions use.

Can't get other flexible options for repaying your loan
Complaint: I attended XXXX University in XXXX XXXX , NJ from XXXX XXXX to XXXX XXXX as an XXXX in the XXXX XXXX XXXX . I did not like my major and college in general was not working out for me. My grades were okay to start off and then proceeded to get terrible by XXXX XXXX . I took a leave of absence which turned into me just dropping out. Each year had costed about {$20000.00} total and so my total in borrowed money from the private student loan company " Salliemae '' w as about {$29000.00}. XXXX loans were used, XXXX for {$22000.00} and XXXX for {$7000.00}. The interest rates are 11/38 % 8.88 % and they 're fixed rates and can not go down. I just moved out of my parents ' house living in an apartment on my own and I 'm realizing how difficult it is to keep on paying the monthly payments I have been paying for the pas t two years. Since XXXX I 've been paying {$580.00} monthly total in student loans, {$450.00} to Salliemae and {$120.00} to a federal student loan. Recently I called Salliemae explaining the situation and asking if there was any alternative monthly payment plan and they said simply no. They said that income based repayment plans and things of that nature are for federal student loans only, not private student loans. They went on to explain that the only choice was basically to be late with my monthly payment, get a late fee applied to my account of no greater than {$25.00} and they wait for the collections agency to contact me about collecting the debt. This is what I 'm currently doing but I 'm afraid it will ruin my credit and I 'm afraid that Salliemae might take money directly from my paycheck.

Problem lowering your monthly payments
Complaint: I have an issue with Sallie Mae because they ca n't offer me any type of repayment plan that is in line with my income. They said I gave up the right to graduated payments because I had to go into forbearance while I searched for another company to refinance with. I do n't qualify with any of the other finance companies because I do n't make enough money. I called Sallie Mae twice today to ask if there was some way I could avoid defaulting on the loans and sparing my co-signers credit XXXX . I offered to make payments on the loans but I ca n't afford the full amount. Sallie Mae told me that I would have to let the loans go into default or delinquency for XXXX days before anyone in Sallie Mae Collections would call me to ask me why I was n't making full payme nts. Only then, would they offer me alternatives. This is, of course, after everyone who co-signed with me has a XXXX late on their credit report which lowers thei r credit score significantly. I owe Sallie Mae {$170000.00}. The payments are {$1500.00} a month. I can pay maybe a {$1000.00}. Even this amount leaves me with no disposable income. Sallie Mae wo n't work with me. I 've tried every possible alternative I can think of before just defaulting on the whole mess. And taking my whole family down with me.

Received bad information about your loan
Complaint: My daughter recently, XX/XX/XXXX , received an email that said she owed a payment of {$640.00}. She had been in school up until XXXX XXXX , and thought that she had a 6 month grace period to begin payment. Sallie Mae s aid that she had already used her 6 month period at an earlier date, when she left school, for medical reasons, and then returned. I was under the assumption that payments would not start until 6 months after XXXX XXXX , when her semester ended. I had no idea that there was only 1 grace period allowed and would like to know if that is true, and if so would like to see where it states. This was also the first time that she had seen a email from Sallie Mae since XXXX . She and I went back through all deleted emails and current inbox. We then went to the spam email and there were three other emails in there from Sallie Mae . If they sent them, and obviously they did, the emails went to spam email. I have also, back in XXXX , sent a letter to the attorney generals office of NY because of this company not putting payments on the proper loans, and over charging on fees, not allowing me to speak to a manager, rude customer service to young adults, and not helping in any way to avoid default ; saying they had no other options available to her for repayment. Because of this investigation SallieMae had to go back into her accounts and make several changes to my account so forgive me if I dont have the confidence in this company. This company also never, ever, even responded to the sample letter that my daughter sent them from your website. But they did want to know where I got it from though. I want to consolidate these loans, and get rid of Sallie Mae , but now I think she will have to be up to date on payments with them, but since I thought there was a 6 month grace period, and cant possibly get that amount of money together within the next month ; now wont be able to consolidate either. I honestly still thought I was in a 6 month grace period, that was never ever clearly explained, and as I mentioned would like to see it. Other loans that she has with XXXX XXXX do n't operate that way. And then not receiving the emails or any correspondence through the mail ; she never knew she was falling behind. Why would n't Sallie Mae , after falling behind, after two months, send correspondence through the mail. It was made very clear in my letter to the Attorney Generals Office that I did not want anymore contact with them over the phone because of how rude and condescending they were on the phone. That i preferred email or " snailmail ''. Thoughts and suggestions greatly appreciated

Problem lowering your monthly payments
Complaint: I have had it with Sallie Mae. Not o my have they told me I can only forbear my loans for a year, they have continuously messed up my account. I always have to give them a call to fix a forberance, because for some reason their agents do not have the common knowledge of what accounts to forbear. I asked on XXXX XXXX ( for the second t ime ) to fo rbear my loan ending in XXXX . The first time they missed it, I assumed it was an error so I called and asked them to fix it. I already paid my XXXX dollars to forbear my loans, I have the loan numbers and everything ( something I would expect the agent to know already since they ask for all your information before hand ). Some how, they still want to show that my loan is not forbeared AND that I am behind on my loan! If I called on the XXXX XXXX XXXX and attempt to get it fixed ; while being assured it is fixed ... I expect to see it fixed on XXXX XXXX ! I am tired of dealing with Sallie Mae. To know that the only way you can get a repayment plan is of you default on your loans ( was told by consumer advocates ) sickens me! I regret ever using them! Something needs to get fixed, before I seek legal counsel. This is literally the third time this happened, and the second time I am making a complaint about it. I am so lost on what to do, and I feel like I should just let them all default and stop trying to make payments because I wonder if they are even going through! If my forbearance can not go through, what makes them think I believe they received my payments ... Or trust them with my bank account information! I am a new mother! I work full-time, and my income level is not going to work for what they want me to pay back every month, let alone the manner they treat their borrowers. I am adding the screenshot of when I called them, and my balances!

Having problems with customer service
Complaint: Th e day before my Salliemae student loan payment was due I contacted a rep to discuss the impact on my account of making my payment at the end of the month rather than the middle for just that one month. The rep indicated it would be no problem, but that I still may get " a call '' each day from Salliemae until I made my payment. I understood, requested my account be notated accordingly, and hung up. For two weeks I endured numerous calls per day ; I lost count at six calls one day, which was the norm for the number of calls Salliemae made in an effort to collect a debt that had a due date that had been arranged and had not come up yet. I was also contacted by e-mail, which indicated my " loan ( s ) require [ d ] [ my ] attention. '' When I contacted Salliemae to discuss how harassing the calls were, I was told Salliemae was perfectly within the bounds of the law on their manner of contacting me under the circumstances with up to eight ( 8 ) calls a day, seven days a week. I was told this by a supervisor, who was rude and argumentative and whose badge number I notated, when I escalated my complaint.
After returning a collection call, within the hour the calls would resume, and every call to me was made without properly identifying their company via caller ID.
It 's a violation of federal ( 15 U.S.C. Subchapter V 1692 ) and state law ( California Civil Code 1788.11 ) to perform collection calls as they did.
I feel like my actions were appropriate in communicating to Salliemae, with proper notice, that I possibly needed to make arrangements for an upcoming payment due date. An agreed upon date was notated and honored in a timely manner by me. The respective steps taken by Salliemae in response to the agreement was unlawful, harassing and completely uncalled for under the circumstances.
I 'd like Salliemae to acknowledge their actions as such and I 'd like the supervisor who claimed to be operating within the law to assure me that under like circumstances, what happened to me will never happen again, or to anyone with a Salliemae student loan. Regards, XXXX XXXX

Complaint: I am the co-signer on my daughters Sallie Mae loans. M y daughter stopped making her payment in XXXX XXXX XXXX . Her loan is currently in default. Since that time I have had several phone conversations with representatives a t Sallie Mae abou t the situation. My daughter has been out of communication with me for over 2 years. I do not know about her work situation or how to contact her. I have provide Sallie Mae the most current information I h ave on her. In XXXX I was told by a Sallie Mae supervisor that they would use the resources at their disposal to connect with her. I explained that I could not pay what they were asking as I am already paying another private Student Loan of hers which is {$720.00} per month. I ca n't afford anything more. They needed to find her and figure this out with her. In XXXX I spoke with Sallie Mae agai n and provided an address and phone number for a he place of employment based on her LinkedIn profile. In XXXX when I spoke with Sallie Mae aga in they informed me that they had not tried to find or reach out to her but needed me to pay. I do not understand why with the resources at their disposal they have no accountability to track her down and fit out what her ability to pay is? I was very disappointed that they did nothing with the information I provided them to find her and provided no solution for me. Since this is a Federal lo an do n't they have an obligation to at the very least provide solutions for the borrow and to do that need to find a way to be in communication with her? It does n't appear to me that they are doing the jobs they are being paid to do. Instead they call me constantly at work, home and on my cell and offer nothing.

Need information about my balance/terms
Complaint: Last week ( XXXX ), I called Sallie Mae t o get a XXXX pay off statement to apply to refinance my loans with someone else. XXXX days before, the pay-out from a different company we 've refied with was placed in my account, so they are aware I 'm trying to re-fi at least some of my loans. I never got the pay-off statement, so I called again last night. While a note had been made on my account, it did n't state how many days I needed nor had the request been filled. Now I have to wait XXXX XXXX business days for the statement to finish my re-fi application. My goal was to have XXXX of my loans re-fied by the time my next payment was due, but now because of this, it will not happen. Trouble with how payments are handled
Complaint: I had XXXX SallieMae loans from my XXXX degree, XXXX of the loans were issued between XX/XX/XXXX and XX/XX/XXXX. I paid off XXXX to SallieMae, and XXXX was later turned over to XXXX. I was fortunate to be able to make payments on time ( to XXXX ), however, I did find that when I came to my very last payments, when I would pay what was supposedly the final amount, the payment would take longer to go through. By the time it would be processed, the loan would have accrued more interest ( and I would thus still have more to pay ). It happened with both SallieMae and XXXX. The first time, I did n't know this, so after waiting a couple of weeks and not yet receive any sort of notification that my loan had been closed out, I checked again and saw that I had accrued somewhere around {$15.00} or {$20.00} worth of interest. I paid this off and the same thing happened again, however, I was able to catch it, and eventually close out the student loan with SallieMae. The same thing happened with the XXXX loan, however, I paid more attention and was able to prevent the lingering amount from compounded as much. Nonetheless it was massively frustrating and made it QUITE clear that neither company has any interest in its customers actually paying off their loans.

Complaint: This is a second complaint against Sallie Mae. They lowered my monthly payment for one month, and than decidely increased again the next. Received bad information about my loan
Complaint: A Sallie Mae private loan came up in June 2016 with me as the borrower and my late father as the cosigner. I had no prior knowledge of this loan so I tried to gain as much information about it as I could. I contacted Sallie Mae about three times, trying to get a copy of the promissory note ( with signature ), but I was either ignored or sent the wrong information. Eventually they sent the correct documentation and the information under my name was horribly incorrect. My martial status, place of work, source of income, and homeownership was a copy of my fathers information. It stated that while attending college, I worked full time for 5 years at a XXXX XXXX, made {$100000.00} with additional income from a spouse of {$100000.00} ( which is inaccurate ). It stated that I was also married and owned a home. The only thing else on the loan was an electronic signature, I asked for a copy of a written signature or a signature written with a track pad, but they did n't respond. I was told by my step-mother to see her lawyer ( an elder and estate law firm ) for help and they advised me to continue to pay the loan while they sent a letter. The response from the letter was that because I took advantage of the loan and that they have an electronic signature I was still responsible for the loan. I found out by looking at the paperwork that my father took out this loan in XX/XX/XXXX while being treated for XXXX and died on XX/XX/XXXX. My father listed that I worked at XXXX XXXX in XXXX and that he worked for XXXX XXXX. I was never notified of the existence of this loan and have met my responsibilities with all the student I was obligated to pay. I was never told about the existence of this loan there I am not responsible. As a side note my mother and I called the US Department of Education and was advised to call XXXX to see if the loan was federal or private and it was private loan from Sallie Mae. When we call Sallie Mae and attempted to speak to a representative on this matter, the representative put on hold then came back and abruptly informed us that she could not speak to us any further and to have our lawyer call this number XXXX. When we called it was not in service and referred us to the original Sallie May number.
