Trouble with how payments are being handled
Complaint: I have twelve different loans with Sallie Mae . I had called two days ago, XXXX , to try to consolidate my loans and they told me they were unable to consolidate any of them. They then tried to convince me to be a part of their Graduate Repayment Program which allows me to make interest-only payments for the first year. While this seemed like a reasonable alternative, I was then told that the interest-only payments would increase the second year and add up to {$500.00} on each of my existing loans. I have over {$100000.00} in loans which they are expecting me to pay back within 10 years. Some of my loans are up to 10 % interest. My monthly payment would be about {$2000.00}. I do n't know of a single person that can afford to pay that much money per month. This amount is more than my house payment. At this point I feel my only other option is to default on my loans because Sallie Mae is unwilling to work with me to come up with a reasonable repayment plan.

Trouble with how payments are being handled
Complaint: I had 4 separate private loans through Sallie Mae. When i went to refinance my student loans through XXXX XXXX they could only cover 3 of my loans for pay off. When i gave XXXX the information for each individual loan for pay off they dispersed the money with a document stating how much money was to be applied to each loan, XXXX XXXX had no knowledge of me having a 4th loan with Sallie Mae therefore when they sent the money for payoff they listed the 3 loans that would be paid off. When Sallie Mae received the check they applied the money how they wanted to, and took the pay off check and applied it to all 4 of my loans. Simply ignoring the paper work that stated what loans were to be affected by the pay off. Sallie Mae applied the money how they wanted too in an effort to keep me as a customer with 4 loans and 4 separate interests rates to make more money off me rather then applying the money how it was directed to be applied which would have left me with 1 loan with and 1 interest rate. Sallie Mae took it upon themselves to apply the money as they wanted and when i spoke with them all the could offer was an apology. But my other concern is that when XXXX or any company at that chose to refinance a loan for pay off they always send extra money in the check to cover any interest accrued during that period of time. When it came time for Sallie Mae to refund the over payment that had no idea how much it was suppose to be for because they messed up on properly applying the money they received for the pay off of my loans. After taking the time to figure out the correct amount of money that i was owed from the over payment, Sallie Mae argued over the amount i said was owed to me. After speaking with about 5 different people at Sallie Mae i was giving a different amount of money that was owed every time i spoke with someone there. My account online read i was owed XXXX while Sallie Mae was only trying to pay back XXXX when i asked how my accountant reads this number and your telling me another amount they had no answer for it. When i brought to their attention that I was aware that they were under investigation for falsely applying customers payments they quickly agreed to send me the check for XXXX with no questions asked. But my problem is that i am actually owed more then XXXX, i am owed approximately 500 dollars more. After i received the check for XXXX i cant seem top get a phone call back or find anyone to speak with you can help me.

Received bad information about your loan
Complaint: On XX/XX/XXXX I contacted Sallie Mae abou t my student loans. I lost my job and was seeking a deferment. I was told by the person I spoke with that I can defer my payments for 3 months at a time. I had to make a {$50.00} payment towards each loan. I was instructed that the payment was going to be made on XX/XX/XXXX . I wa s also told that I would be deferred for XX/XX/XXXX , XX/XX/XXXX and XX/XX/XXXX . W ith option to continue deferme nt by XX/XX/XXXX or m ake my payment. On XX/XX/XXXX m y co-signer received a letter stating I was behind on my payments. My co-signer contacted Sallie Mae a nd the person he spoke with insisted there was no arrangement made with them to defer my payments. He insisted that she double check. She came back on the line and said yes there is a plan setup for deferment, however it does n't start until the good faith payment is made o n XX/XX/XXXX . My co-signer asked to speak with a supervisor. The supervisor said that nothing could be done and if the payment was not made for the delinquent account that it will be reported to the credit bureau and effect his credit. Now they had him pay for XX/XX/XXXX and XX/XX/XXXX payme nts totaling {$710.00}. The information tha t Sallie Mae provi des their clients with is false or they do not know what they are talking about. On top of that bac k in XX/XX/XXXX , th ey showed my payment on XXXX account to be 60 days late. My co-signer ' s credit score plummeted from XXXX to XXXX . However I had automatic payments setup for both accounts, but the one account w as never deducted from my bank account. The way Sallie Mae do es business is terrible. The employees do not know what information they are giving to people, they also use bullying tactics to get money from the person that took out the loan. They will call and leave no message, then call your co-signer before you have a chance to call them back.

Problem with a credit reporting company's investigation into an existing problem

Student loan: Private student loan

Their investigation did not fix an error on your report
Complaint: My payment was due and I went online to the Sallie Mae w ebsite to make the payment. The transaction was done on XX/XX/17 in the amount of {$490.00}. The payment was to be deducted from my checking account on XX/XX/17 . After making the payment I re ceived an email confirmation from Sallie Mae. A couple of weeks later, I started to receive calls from Sallie Mae. I called back and was told that my account was 62 days past due. I informed the representative that I had ma de a payment a few weeks earlier. I was told that the payment did n't process because of an error. She could not tell me what was the error or why the payment did n't go through. While on the phone with the rep, I pulled up my online banking and realized that an attempt was never made to debit the payment from my account. The rep could not explain what happened, I then inquired about credit reporting since she informed me when the call was authenticated that my account was 62 days past due. I was told that they would report to the credit bureaus a 60 day late payment for the month of XXXX to my credit report. I asked why would that occur since I made the payment online and there was an error on their end which caused the payment not to process. I was told that since the payment was made online, it must have been my fault. Sallie Mae can not provide any documentation to prove that I made an error. I can not view my checking account number on their website to determine if I in fact made an error when my account nu mber was added to my online profile. They have now reported to all XXXX credit bureaus that I was 60 days late for the month of XXXX . This is totally unfair to me as a consumer because I made my payment on time and I have no control of their systems and how they process payments. They can not show that I made an error. Also, How could I be 60 days late for XXXX when I made the second payment in XXXX . There are only 30 days between XXXX and XXXX .

Trouble with how payments are being handled
Complaint: I recently recieved a re-fi loan for my Sallie Mae Loans. The first loan was disbursed correctly, and the second one was not. It was split up into the three loans that were left, and not used to pay off one loan as was directed by my new loan servicer. I know I and my re-fi company correctly communicated which loans were supposed to be paid off, but instead, Sallie Mae has once again messed everything up. All they want to do is keep me paying the insane interest rates I have been unfairly given. This is the third time I 've had to file a complaint about them with you, and the second one in two months.

Received bad information about your loan
Complaint: I have calle d Sallie Mae over 7 times in order to get the second disbursement of my loan funds for my bar exam study loan. The company told me that it would take three business days for the request to disburse the funds to go through - and that they would then send out the check. This was on XXXX XXXX . I called back three business days later, and they first said they had no record of this request, but then said that the request had gone through -- - but there was no indication in their system about when or if it would disburse. I again told them that I wanted the funds disbursed to me [ you get to choose your disbursement date ] and they said it would take another business day. I have repeatedly kept calling, asking where the funds are and what is going on, and they have XXXX information. They said there was a delay because of XXXX XXXX ... even though I initiated this on XXXX XXXX , well before that holiday, and it is now XXXX XXXX The company still has the funds, they will not give me any information about my loan or when the money is coming through, and have repeatedly stated that there 's nothing else they can do for me. Except to tell me to wait three business days and call them back. I have tried to add my husband to my account, to allow him to call them as well, and have done this THREE times. Each time they take down all of his personal information, and he is never added to the account. Further, they state that there was no notes about adding him to the account and they have no record of this ever taking place. Which is concerning, because he has given out his personal information to three differen t Sallie Mae reps. We are now concerned these individuals are stealing his personal information, which includes social security number. This company is horrific to deal with - they do not give accurate information, they do not allow you to speak to managers or anyone higher on the staffing list, they do not actually send documents or information when they state that they 're going to do so, and they currently have {$5000.00} of my funds that they refuse to disburse to me even though I am paying interest on this loan. I have never had student loans before and never dealt with a private loan company, and this is truly disgusting. They should n't even be allowed to exist or work with consumers, as they are nothing but a scam and have totally inept crooks working for them.

Getting a loan

Student loan: Private student loan

Denied loan
Complaint: I have been trying to get a student loan from Sallie Mae for the past year now. Every time I have applied, they have rejected me. I was told at first that it was because of a collection on my history which I called the collection agency and the party involved and was dimmed a mistake on the party 's end. They fixed the issue. I told Sallie Mae it was no fault of mine and that the issue was resolved. Sallie Mae told me to reapply, of which I did and the second time was denied. I asked them why a second denial but was told they would send the denial letter to my address which would tell me the reason ( s ) I was denied. I got the letter the following week and it was the same exact reason the first one was denied. I called them to find out what was wrong but was told it could be my credit score and the fact that I am not a XXXX XXXX. But I told them that I am a XXXX XXXX with a XXXX XXXX. Also told the agent that my credit score was XXXX both for XXXX and XXXX. I have no late payments in any of my bills. He did n't know what to say but for me to reapply again but this time with a co-signer. This time I asked my wife to co-sign for me. By the way, my wife 's credit score is close to XXXX on both XXXX and XXXX with an outstanding clean credit records/history. After we both applied again, using her my co-signer, we were denied again. I asked why, how is it possible to deny two people with perfect credit score and history? Again, the agent replied " I can tell you on the phone, I will have to send a letter to your home address '' At this time frustration is already building up.
We decided to borrow money from family members for me to go to school. My mother in law had to close one of her 401K to give me the money. Now after 10 months, I have even built my credit worthiness and score higher. No collections whatsoever is in my account. I received a letter from Sallie Mea to reapply and that I have a great approval eligibility. I ignored it as I have been ignoring all their emails and letters to reapply since XX/XX/XXXX 2016. However, my wife wanted me to give it another try because we need the money for the fall and spring semesters. I was still reluctant as I believed it would be a waste of time.
Finally I decided to call Sallie Mae and did a phone application as always. Again, I was rejected even with a very clean financial records and history. This time I have had enough of Sallie Mae. I asked the agent why is Sallie Mae bent on not approving a loan to me? He said he does n't know. I asked, is it because I am not XXXX? Or do n't I deserve an education like my classmates with not so good of a credit history but are XXXX? I do n't like bringing the racial card, but at this point it is obvious is not my credit history or score but my skin color. I need money to go to school. I have one more year to go but Sallie Mae seemed to have made it their mission to prevent me from finishing college.
If it was just me, maybe I could overlook it, but my wife cosigning for me with a great credit history? And still denied twice?
I really do n't know what to think except that Sallie Mae is discriminating against XXXX or XXXX XXXX who are trying to better themselves and that of their families.
Please I will truly appreciate it if this goes to the right people and actions are taken to fix this because we have done everything we need to do on our parts to keep a good credit score, history and lifestyle. Never thought of all loans to get, the student loan would be the problem. Buying our home was n't a problem, our cars were n't any issues at all, but student loan of {$16000.00} is a problem? I do n't understand this at all.

Struggling to repay your loan

Student loan: Private student loan

Can't get other flexible options for repaying your loan
Complaint: I decided to reach out to Sallie Mae after 18 months of on time repayment to discuss restructuring my payment plan after hitting a time of financial hardship. After doing some research online, I had found that many people had issues with their customer service being rude, unknowledgeable, and inconsistent with their answers across different representatives. While my interactions were pleasant, I found the later two certainly true. I first spoke with a customer service representative onXX/XX/XXXXat XXXX.
The first woman I spoke to after discussing my desire to restructure my loans through their interest rate reduction or loan term extension plans ( not advertised on their site at all, read about elsewhere ) was not very helpful to say the least. When I first mentioned my graduation date XX/XX/XXXXshe told me I would have had to apply for rate reduction by XX/XX/XXXX and that service was no longer offered ( again this information is nowhere on their site ). She then asked me if I understood Sallie Mae was a private lender, which certainly attests to their non-transparency if that 's something they have to regularly clarify to callers. She essentially told me there were no options for my particular loans, so I asked to speak with a supervisor.
The supervisor was slightly nicer, and gave me completely different answers to my questions. She asked if I was aware of their deferment options, which I was ( not at all mentioned by the first representative who said there were no options for me ). When I mentioned I was interested in rate reduction or loan term extension she mentioned that I would have to be delinquent 5 days for my loans and that somebody would call me to discuss repayment options at that point.
This advice seemed contrary to what was posted on their site ( See attached image for screenshot ) : If you are having trouble making payments, call us at XXXX ( XXXX ). We 're committed to working with you to help you get back on track. You may also visit our payment difficulties page on salliemae.com.
The fact that I called that number and was immediately told their was nothing they could do really shows they are not true to their own policy, especially when contrary information was offered by a supervisor.
Another concerning aspect of this discussion was a complete turnaround of information I received from the supervisor. My interest rates have increased 4 times in the last twelve months including immediately after I applied for and was denied a cosigner release. Because this information is not directly available on their site, I asked if credit score affected my interest rates. At first she said yes, then I mentioned the increase immediately after my cosigner release application ( which to me seemed like a punitive measure ).
After I mentioned that she said my credit score in fact did not reflect that and it was actually tied to current LIBOR rates, which I could check online. The general feeling I got from this call was that Sallie Mae 's customer service 's top priority is to get callers off the line while offering no or next to no assistance, all the while omitting or giving completely false information to move this process along.
I apologize for the length of this complaint and I tried to make it as straight to the point as possible rather than writing an editorial, but you can surely see where my frustration comes in. Had I not done the preliminaryresearch on how others have dealt with this company, I may have given up after my first discussion when I was told there was nothing they could do. This is frustrating because despite the fact I may get nowhere with my efforts, other individuals who take this company at their word and appearance of honesty may be discouraged much quicker.
My main concern here is that I was told I would need to be in delinquency to discuss repayment restructuring. While I am an individual with a high amount of student and credit card debt, I have never missed monthly payments and I pride myself on that. Being told by a member of a company I 'm doing business with to violate a contractural agreement does not seem like good business practice, especially when they advertise themselves as willing to help and discuss these options.

Complaint: I contacted the CFPB back in XXXX or XXXX with problems wi th Sallie Mae. After you contacted them, they finally told me they did have a forbearance. Now, I still do not have a job. Every month they increase the interest. This month my interest sits on 3 loans : 10.375 %, 9.750 %, and 8 %. These interest rates are highway robbery, and every month they increase. How are students suppose to pay loans back? Student loans are meant to help students not destroy them. I am a single mother and struggling to get a job even after completing school. They make it to where I will spend the rest of my life struggling to pay back their loans. It 's only Sallie Mae that is highway robbery. My federal loans have been extremely nice and helpful.

Problem with customer service
Complaint: In dealing with Sallie Mae Student Loa ns, I have repeatedly tried to tell them that I could not make my $ 600+/month payment. I have asked repeatedly for options in the past and have asked the company disclose ALL relief options to me. It was n't until recently when my account became so past due to the point of nearly charging off that I was actually able to get some sort of disclosure for options but because they did not give me this information in a timely manner, I have a smaller window of time to even make a decision which is not fair on my end as a consumer.
