Struggling to repay your loan

Student loan: Federal student loan servicing

Can't get other flexible options for repaying your loan
Complaint: I have had my loans since XXXX. Started with a balance of approximately {$30000.00}. It is now XXXX and I owe over {$32000.00}. I have paid them different payment amounts each year, 4-5 years anywhere between {$36.00} - {$120.00} since it varies due to their plan and my income. How am I ever going to pay them off if out of this entire time and I can't seem to ever lower this balance. Instead it continues to increase rather than decrease!! This is a total scam these people have and someone needs to do something about it!!! Nobody there seems to be able to give me a logical explanation as to why the balance has not gone down at all.

Student loan: Federal student loan servicing

Received bad information about your loan
Complaint: I work as an RN for a non-profit and was under the impression that I would qualify for public service loan forgiveness. I went through the appropriate steps of consolidating my loans ( per Navient, formerly Sallie Mae ) and was guided towards a specific repayment option. It is now 6 years later and I am just finding out that the repayment option that I was guided to is INCORRECT and INELIGIBLE for the program, and that I essentially have 20 more years of repayment under my current option, NOT the 4 years I thought. I am now in the process of changing my repayment option but have to restart with 10 years of payments. I was guided by Navient ( Sallie Mae ) officials to Consolidate under Direct Loans, and then use Graduated Repayment, which per them, was an acceptable method of repayment for PSLF. I have been hearing about this problem in the media, so I did a little research to find that I also have been a victim of this misinformation. I believe I started repayment after consolidation around XXXX/XX/XX/2012, with $ XXXX consolidated under Direct Loans. I have not missed a payment and very responsible with my finances. This whole situation is sickening. I would have chosen a different payment method from Day 1 if I knew I wasn't eligible for Public Service Loan Forgiveness. I have been seeing a lot on the news about lawsuits against Navient for this exact reason, but it being held up by XXXX and XXXX. I do not know what I am supposed to do at this point. I know that there is Temporary Expanded Public Service Loan Forgiveness that is supposed to address this issue, but you can only apply to that if you have made 10 years of payments. I am only 6 years in to my payments, but what am I supposed to do moving forward? If I don't qualify for PSLF I want to chose a different payment method that accrues less interest, but I also don't want to switch my payment method and get penalized for it.

Complaint: In XX/XX/XXXX I asked to be placed on a repayment plan acceptable by the Loan Forgiveness program. I informed them that I worked for the XXXX XXXX and required the 120 payment set up for the Load Forgiveness program. Navient representatives guided me through the process and placed me on an income based repayment plan they said is acceptable for the Loan Forgiveness program. Seven years into my repayment plan I discovered I was supposed to send in proof of employment so that my years of payments and employment would be verified. Last year ( XX/XX/XXXX-XX/XX/XXXX ) I called the XXXX XXXX XXXX and was informed the income based repayment program Navient placed me on was not recognized in the Loan Forgiveness program. I am currently XXXX years old. I was getting ready to retire after 25 years of XXXX XXXX and I am forced to rethink my retirement date. when I transferred my loan to the XXXX XXXX XXXX, I received a tax form from Navient that documented I paid THEM {$25000.00} in interest and NOTHING towards my student loan balance. I have been making payment to Navient for 20 years and I still have the same balance.

Complaint: I sold my house to pay off over $ 60K in loans with Navient. I sat in XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX office and spoke to someone from Navient to get the payoff. They refused to fax me the amount so I had something in writing and would only verbally give me a payoff. XXXX XXXXXXXX XXXX sent the payoff check to Navient. Not once in my 45 minute conversation with the gentleman from Navient did he disclose that the payoff needed to be sent to two different addresses. They applied the entire balance to one of the loans and left the other two loans outstanding. I logged into my account a week later and saw a negative $ XXXX balance on the one loan and the others outstanding still. When I called the Navient employee told me the payment would be applied to the other loans but that it could take up to two weeks. She assured me that the interest that accrued in the meantime would be adjusted. Today I log in and there is a remaining balance of {$100.00}. Had I not logged in and seen this I supposed they would have just kept accruing interest on that balance and before long I'd have owed a XXXX again!!! This criminal company is already in trouble for bad business practices!!! When I called today I was told they can not adjust the balance. I said they why did you LIE to me and say that it would be taken care of? Why would I pay off over $ 60K in student loans except for {$100.00}?? They are CROOKS!!!

Don't agree with the fees charged
Complaint: I have proof that Navient has victimized me and most likely others. Please see attached as proof. I was able to print screen what they are trying to do to me and others. If they do this to all of, their clients thinking a client will miss such a small difference, they are raking in millions of dollars. While I was on the call questioning them raising my payment/forbearance without my consent, miraculously put me on hold and kicked me out of the system. Too bad for them I already had screen shot everything. Please see attached. This is egregious behavior. Talked to Navient and requested info on XX/XX/18 at XXXX XXXX for 40 minutes 20 secs. To find out why my due date was pushed back a month without authorization from me, and asked why my payment increased. They answered that company policy is that they are giving an extra month of forbearance as a courtesy without authorization. I interrupted and said I didnt request another forbearance. Rudely representative stated sir, you are not listening, I just told you this was a courtesy. I explained by doing that, they increased my interest and increased my payment {$9.00} a month as well as my balance. Requested information in writing on why they increased my payment. I was told I will receive by XX/XX/XXXX and dont make payment until then. I asked what is my actual payment right now. Representative stated new higher payment. I have screen shots in two different sections of my account summary as proof. Questioned them, put me on hold, then all of a sudden information disappeared. Fortunately I screen shot before.

Trouble with how payments are being handled
Complaint: I am reaching out for assistance with a payment made to Navient. A payment was initiated by XXXX XXXX on XX/XX/18 to Navient electronically. The payment was in the amount of {$4200.00} which was to payoff my final Navient loan. On XX/XX/XXXX, I realized that my payment had not posted and it was then discovered that the account number was one digit incorrect. At this time, I contacted Navient. I spoke with a CSR who informed me that I needed to send proof of payment through my online account and they would reroute the payment to the correct account. I was given a 7-14 business day resolution time-frame with it being complete on XX/XX/18. On XX/XX/18, my payment still had not posted so I called again. The CSR at first stated that they still had my payment and that I would need to wait 10-14 business days for it to post. I had already waited that time so I pressed about it being a high priority. She placed me on hold and then said that the payment had actually been sent back to the bank on XX/XX/18. She can not give me the bank name, routing, account, reference number, trace number, etc. As of today, XXXX hasnt received the refund. The Navient CSR gave a 7-14 business day window to get the payment back. An electronic payment does not take 7-14 business days. I need assistance tracking this money down so I can payoff my loan. Thank you, XXXX XXXX

Student loan: Federal student loan servicing

Received bad information about your loan
Complaint: In XX/XX/XXXX, I was having difficulty making my student loan payment to Navient. Subsequently I used 3 years of forbearance time. Rather than being advised on a payment through an Income Based Repayment plan, I used all my forbearance time towards the beginning of paying off my student loans. So, in XX/XX/XXXX, a total of {$18000.00} of capitalized interest was added to the total of my loan. At that time, I re-entered an Income based payment plan which I have been paying from XX/XX/XXXX until now. I have missed a few months payments, but am doing the best I can to make all payments timely. Unfortunately due to the excessive forbearance time I used and subsequent capitalized interest, the payments I am making are not even covering the interest that is accruing. Therefore, the total balance of my loan is growing despite all the payments I am making. I believe if I was properly informed at any time during the 3 years of forbearance, I would not be in this situation. Now, if there is an imminent need to use forbearance time during a short-term financial struggle, I would not even have that available.

Attempts to collect debt not owed

Debt collection: Medical debt

Debt is not yours
Complaint: XXXX XXXX XXXX first contacted me in XX/XX/XXXX about a {$540.00} XXXX bill that had somehow become associated with me via XXXX XXXX XXXX Services. I contacted XXXX XXXX XXXX Services and we found quickly that the bill was in error - I was incorrectly identified as the person who owed the bill. XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX contacted XXXX XXXX XXXX several times, and explained to them that the bill was in error - I never should have been charged as they had billed the incorrect person. A quote from one of the correspondences to XXXX XXXX XXXX from XXXX XXXX ( Medical Billing Supervisor ) : " Please remove CR XXXXXX to also include any credit bureau reporting. This patient account was placed in error. The information placed with collections was for the incorrect patient. '' I thought the matter closed, but on XX/XX/XXXX I received a letter from XXXX XXXX XXXX that I still owed money on the erroneously assigned bill. The letter stated " According to records provided by XXXX XXXX Florida - EMS, your account is past due and remains outstanding. '' This is a direct contradiction to what XXXX XXXX has tried to explain to XXXX.

Trouble with how payments are being handled
Complaint: I was on a repayment plan with Navient in which they auto debited my monthly payments from my checking account. On XX/XX/XXXX at XXXX PST, I called Navient customer service and asked that they cancel my XXXX payment of {$120.00} scheduled for the XX/XX/XXXX of that month, due to recent financial difficulties that month. I confirmed that I was only cancelling XXXX and my other payments should remain intact. I have confirmations and dates that I requested the payment be cancelled. When the date came for my normal payment, the payment was processed rather than being cancelled. To avoid getting NSF charges from my bank, I was forced to stop payment on my check since Navient did not cancel my payment as promised. I then noticed in XX/XX/XXXX that none of my scheduled payments from Navient had been taken out as they should have been. As soon as I noticed the problem, I called Navient to find out what was going on and make my payment. I was told my account was " black listed '' due to the stop payment and that I needed to get a letter from my bank proving my account. I explained to Navient the error their representative had made and explained I was forced to stop payment due to my negligence. I was still told that I need to get a letter from my bank. I called my bank and was informed that they could not send a letter to Navient to prove my account. When I reported this to Navient they still said I needed to send a letter. Due to this problem with my account, I was not able to make payments through my checking account. I was advised by Navient that I couldn't set up a payment plan on a debit card. Failure on Navient 's end to accept my payment caused my loan to go more than 3 months delinquent. When I called Navient on XX/XX/XXXX to make a payment and set up a payment plan. I was told my first payment would go through on XX/XX/XXXX. When that payment didn't process, I called Navient on XX/XX/XXXX and was told the payment was processed on Navient 's end and I should wait for my bank to take the money out. When the payment still had not processed by XX/XX/XXXX, I called my bank to ask if they saw an attempted payment of {$120.00} from Navient. My bank advised me they didn't even see an attempt by Navient to make a payment. I called Navient again to follow up again on XX/XX/XXXX again to make a payment, they said they would call me back on XX/XX/XXXX if the payment still had not processed so I could make a payment at that time. Navient called me around XXXX on XX/XX/XXXX, I answered and was notified that my account had gone to a different " tier '' or " bucket. '' When I spoke with the next customer service representative they said they attempted to process my payment and said the reason for the failed payment is my bank was " unable to locate account. '' When I called my bank, my bank informed me that no payment had even been attempted. If Navient had indeed attempted the payment, my bank would have shown that an attempt was made. So the fact that Navient reports submitted the payment and it comes back " unable to locate account '' is a lie. I also received a letter saying my bank rejected a payment but I called my bank and they still don't locate an attempt by Naivent to process a payment. If my bank rejected the payment, my bank would be able to see the attempt to submit the payment by Navient and they do not show that. I still can not afford for my credit to be further ruined, so I made a one time payment on my debit card with Navient and explained to them I could not get a letter from my bank. I asked if I could set up a payment plan on my debit card and they said I could but it still would not bring my account current. I need my account to be current. So I was again told they needed a letter and they get these letters all the time. My bank advised me to send a copy of a voided check to Navient and that should work. I asked Navient if I could do that and was told that would not work. If they get these letters all the time from banks, why won't XXXX XXXX provide one? So I will now have to request time off of work to go to my local branch and ask if a letter including my routing and account number and confirming I have a current account can be sent to Navient. This way Navient can remove the restriction on my bank account. If feel that Navient is actively trying to prevent me from making payments so I can go further in arrears and owe them more and more in interest. I am frustrated because all of this transpired due to a customer service assistant at Navient didn't properly cancel my payment as they promised. I understand that they need to have policies to prevent people from placing stop payments, but I only placed a stop payment after Navient failed to cancel my payment as I requested. I am the only income in my household of 4 people, as my husband was layed off years ago and is having difficulty finding employment. I am trying to get by as it is and keep up with student loan payments. I can only make interest only payments due to the fact that my husband is unemployed. I am struggling to make these payments as it is and Navient continues to make it difficult.
