Credit card company isn't resolving a dispute about a purchase on your statement
Complaint: On XXXX XXXX, XXXX, I requested assistance from Discover Bank/Discover Financial Services in order to initiate a dispute for a transaction that posted to my Discover Credit Card on XXXX, XXXX, XXXX. The dispute was against a merchant by the name of XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX in the amount of {$500.00}. The following are the reasons for the dissatisfaction of the services provided by the merchant in which caused the dispute : # 1 - The merchant mislead me into paying for a baseball tournament event so that my son can attend under the conditions that he would use him as a pitcher in which he never did. # 2 - Extremely insufficient game time during the very few innings that my son participated due to the amount of players that the merchant signed up for the tournament. Baseball players want to participate and not be sitting on a bench and watch other players play. # 3 - The merchant provided verbal tournament conditions in which he stated that the players were guaranteed to play four games in which they only played three games even after the forecast was clear of any rain. The explanation given for the reduction of games was that the tournaments management staff stated that they were running behind on schedule. # 4 - The merchant invited 15+ players at {$500.00} each to the tournament and most of them were not even on the event 's roster including my son. # 5 - The merchant was not an active state of Florida corporation at the time of the tournament event in which raised major concerns. I have provided Discover with numerous statements of how dissatisfied my family and I was with the services provided by the merchant. However, for some reason Discover is on the same side as the merchant. Why should I pay a merchant for his unethical business practice? It is my professional opinion that Discover has broken the Cardmember Agreement by not providing a fair resolution to a merchant complaint/dispute even though the merchant acted in bad faith. However, I acted in good faith and paid the merchant for services that he did fulfill and Discover agrees with the merchant in which is to basically steal my money.

Getting a credit card

Credit card or prepaid card: General-purpose credit card or charge card

Delay in processing application
Complaint: On XXXX XXXX, XXXX I was approved for a discover credit card for students. As a newly adult attending college I figured this was the best card with the best opportunities for college students. I was excitedly anticipating my card getting delivered and it was received today on XXXX XXXX, XXXX. I called to activate my card since I could n't online, they passed me through several departments and the last one I spoke to was a women with a southern accent, I however did not remember her name. The minute she answered me she began to misgender me. She referred to me as Sir and Mr.. I was quite offended and my cousin being in the same room as mine and overhearing what was happening looked concerned. She ended up taking the phone from me and correcting the women, telling her to refer to me as Mrs or Ma'am, because I am in fact a women. The women on the line got very quiet, I proceeded to take the phone back and attempt to continue to activate my card because I no longer wanted to speak to her and wanted to get this over with. She then said she was going to call me back with the number I had provided on my application and I never received a call. I called Discover back and they said my account was being reviewed. I understand the confusion that comes from hearing two different voices, however she clearly misgendered me and threw me completely off balance. I have never been misgendered over the phone and I will continue to be offended until I receive a formal apology and proper help to activating my account. Now my activation has been delayed for another 2 days and I will be expected to be on their schedule when my own schedule is already filled with school and work.

Problem when making payments

Credit card or prepaid card: General-purpose credit card or charge card

Problem during payment process
Complaint: Discover Card XX/XX/XXXX & XX/XX/XXXX When attempting to make a greater than minimum payment on my account, Discover stated that if I paid greater than the minimum payment that my ENTIRE BALANCE would become due. I contacted Discover and have their reply that " We are not seeing this error. '' I have screen shots that prove this. I had previously contacted them ( prior to XX/XX/XXXX ) and this has not yet been resolved. I again today attempted to make a payment and received the same notification. This alarms me that they will ONLY accept a minimum payment and not allow me to pay off my account faster. Additionally, if a customer missed the statement that their entire balance is due they could face undue financial distress should Discover automatically withdraw the 'Balance Due '.

Student loan: Private student loan

Trouble with how payments are being handled
Complaint: On XXXX/XXXX/XXXX, I accessed my account to to make sure that I did not need to submit paperwork regarding my student loan interest in anticipation of filing my taxes in XXXX. I noticed that my loan balances had been increasing every month for several months, and then I noticed that my account was in deferment. After checking my statements, I noted that my account was put in deferment in XXXX XXXX. I neither authorized nor wanted this deferment. My loans were close to being paid off when I last checked my balances in XXXX XXXX, and I looked forward to being relieved of this debt before I graduate from XXXX XXXX with new loan balances to pay in XXXX XXXX. My account for these loans has been on auto-payment for a long time, before Discover purchased my loans from XXXX in XXXX. I had no reason to think that my payments were not being deducted as instructed. I received no notice that my account was put into deferment, nor was it requested. The only notice that I received from Discover in XXXX XXXX was an indication that my interest rate had increased, which I attributed to the increase in federal rates. My interest rate was at 3.5 % for two loans and 3.25 % for one other at the time the deferment was instituted. Now, my interest rates are 3.75 % for two, and 3.5 % for the other. I called Discover for an explanation on XXXX/XXXX/XXXX. Discover 's representative told me that Discover had a company-wide issue with this and had been resolving the cases as they came up. He advised me that several accounts had a " box '' checked on their applications indicating that their account should automatically move to deferment status if Discover is made aware that the customer is in school. I never notified Discover that I was in school, because it was never my intention to defer these loans. Furthermore, I do not recall ever checking a box for this option. The Discover rep moved my account out of deferment and told me that my next auto-payment would be XXXX/XXXX/XXXX. However, this does not resolve the issue that, had Discover not put my account into an unauthorized deferment, my account would have been basically paid off by XXXX XXXX. Also, some of my payments would have been at a lower interest rate. Now, I will be paying for these loans up to my graduation, at a higher interest rate. I asked Discover for remuneration for the inconvenience and increased interest rate and was told that none was currently available for customers, like me, who were affected by Discover 's error. I contact CFPB today, because Discover indicated that this was an issue that affected many with student loans owned by Discover. Though my loans balances are low, and the amount of additional interest that I will end up paying will be small, other customers have larger loans balances, which will result in a larger payout to Discover in the long run. It is patently unjust that Discover should profit from their mistake. Furthermore, since the error was on the part of Discover, Discover has the responsibility to rectify the error and actively contact any and all customers affected, rather than the other way around.

Opening an account

Checking or savings account: Savings account

Didn't receive terms that were advertised
Complaint: I need help resolving an issue with applying for a Discover Bank deposit account. I am XXXX XXXX XXXX and a long time discover card holder. I recently decided to also open a savings account and it has been a surprisingly poor experience. There are many options where I can put my money but I have always been happy with my discover card. In setting up my savings account, I attempted to take advantage of one of its recurring promotional offers in XX/XX/XXXX. My promotional code was XXXX. To qualify for the promotion, I needed to apply by XX/XX/XXXX and make a deposit of $ XXXX by XXXX to obtain a {$200.00} bonus. I did apply by XXXX as required but the deposit of $ XXXX did not occur until XXXX, 9 days late. However, there were many other customer service encounters in between that were poor. There were many gaps in what was promised and what was delivered in terms of emails and returned calls. I believe some of these were intentional obstacles so Discover Bank would not have to pay me the bonus. I appealed to the higher ups at Discover Bank and they still have not paid the {$200.00} bonus. They run promotions like this all the time and my guess is that I am not the first person to face obstacles and delays so they did not have to pay the bonus. Additional details are in the attached timeline.

Card was charged for something you did not purchase with the card
Complaint: On XX/XX/2017 I made a purchase of 9.9 gallons of gasoline in the amount of {$21.00} at the XXXX XXXX in XXXX, WI using my Discover Card. When I received my bill there was an additional charge for {$100.00} at this location which I did not incur. I first contacted the XXXX XXXX WI Sheriff 's Department and then contacted Discover Card. The XXXX XXXX Sheriff 's Department initiated Case # XXXX, and Discover Card initiated Case # XXXX. Discover Card initially rescinded the charge, but then toward the end of XXXX I received their determination that the charge was valid and had been put back on my account. I responded, detailing the vehicle I was driving and indicating there was no way I could have put approximately 55 gallons of gasoline in a XXXX XXXX as their determination indicated and that surveillance video would show that all I did was put 9.9 gallons of fuel in the XXXX. Discover Card dismissed my claims and is holding me responsible for the charge. Discover Card asked for supporting documentation for my claim, but there is no way to document something I did not do. Supporting documentation is attached.

Struggling to repay your loan

Student loan: Private student loan

Can't temporarily delay making payments
Complaint: Called Discover Student Loans XXXX/XXXX/XXXX to cancel automatic payments, because I could not cancel automatic payments nor change the payment withdrawal date using their online system. Was assured by the customer service rep that the automatic payments had been stopped. Was charged a payment on XXXX/XXXX/XXXX, called Discover Student Loans that same morning. They said they had " no record '' of my call, " no notes. '' I assured them I had the call history in my own phone. They assured me that my automatic payments had now been canceled. This payment coming out of my bank account was unexpected, and it caused my bank account to overdraft. On top of the negative balance, I am now responsible to my bank for an overdraft fee. Also asked about my forbearance options and representative said she would have to transfer me to another department, which I did not have time for.

Problem when making payments

Credit card or prepaid card: General-purpose credit card or charge card

You never received your bill or did not know a payment was due
Complaint: I enrolled for a payment plan with discover after they failed to inform me that my payment was returned by a bank account that was close. The automatic payment that discover set up was XXXX dollars and the payment was made on XX/XX/XXXX, which was the due date. Discover failed to mention that this payment plan would not cover the full past due balance. On XX/XX/XXXX they reported a 30 day late payment. When I signed up for the payment plan they did not mention anywhere on the plan that the past due balance would not be cover and that I would have to make an additional payment. If i was aware of this I would have made the full payment on my own. I signed up for the automatic payment so I would not have to worry about being unware of a late payment again. I called discover explaining this to them and they said there was nothing they could do. I even said that I would make the missing portion of the automatic payment now and they stillsaid that there was nothing that could be done about the inaccurate reporting. I am reporting in hopes that you can remove the 30 days late as I was clearly unaware that the automatic payment would not cover the full past due balance.
