Complaint: Today ( XX/XX/19 ) I was buying a XXXX XXXX ticket online and there was a solicitation for a Gold Skymiles American Express card advertising a future {$200.00} credit for any XXXX purchase. I applied for the card and was approved and I received a prompt asking if I wanted the card number immediately and I answered yes, but then did not receive the number ( which I needed to buy the XXXX ticket ). I then called customer service to try to get a temporary or permanent number and I was passed around to multulple departments and no one could help me. I finally told the representative that I wanted to cancel the card and then I was advised that I would not be eligible for any promotional offers on the card in the future. Unscrupolous/dishonest credit card offer with terrible customer service. American Express has lost me as a customer for life.

Problem with fees
Complaint: Opened American Express account in approximately XX/XX/2019. I have never used the card. On XX/XX/2019 received email stating " in XX/XX/19 ANNUAL MEMBERSHIP FEE Cover your annual membership {$250.00}. '' I immediately called American Express about this deceptive and hidden fee. I asked them to close the account and remove the fee. The fee was not due to be paid until XX/XX/2019. They closed the account but the fee remains. I have never used this card. I have received no services from this account. The only charge on it is their outrageous {$250.00} annual fee. Once this charge was brought to my attention I immediately called and tried to resolve. Please have Amex remove this fee and discourage their deceptive business practices.

Complaint: I filed a CFPB complaint against American Express on XX/XX/XXXX, got response from the company today as of XX/XX/XXXX. However, the company refused to address my complaint by stating " During your online application you were advised based on your history with American Express Welcome offers, introductory APR offers, or the number of cards you have opened and closed, you are not eligible to receive this Welcome offer. The message also explained that no credit check had yet been performed and you were given the option to cancel the application or proceed. You elected to proceed with the application, without the Welcome offer. '' This claim was completely false. I am 100 % sure no such message was provided during my application, or I would not have proceeded with my application. In my initial complaint letter, I also clearly stated " Then I was told that on the XXXX website where one can apply for the credit cards there will be a message towards the end of the application process that tells you if you are eligible for the welcome offer prior to the final application processing. However, in my case no such message was provided during my application process. Hence, I assumed that I was eligible for the promotional offer. More importantly, XXXX should be obligated to inform the applicant immediately even if they have the so called " reserved rights '' to decline offer any time for any reason ( based on what the online agent said ). '' I suspect that the company was not even paying attention to my descriptions in the letter. Therefore, I submitted a new complaint immediately onXX/XX/XXXX. I received the same response from the company on XX/XX/XXXX claiming that I was provided with the eligibility information for the welcome offer prior to the final application processing, which was completely false. This was a deceptive marketing event and through my conversations with other American Express customers, I learned that I was not the only one affected by the recent fraud activities. I demand that this event be thoroughly investigated and further involvement of legal authorities if necessary.

Complaint: Hello, I applied for the new Personal American Express Gold Card on the XXXX of XX/XX/XXXX through the website. The promotional offer that I applied with was the following : XXXX American Express Membership Rewards Points after spending {$2000.00} or more within the first 60 days of account opening. The website explicitly called out this offer and confirmed that I was approved for the card with that promotional offer. The website DID NOT call out that I was INELIGIBLE for this offer. I also satisfied all the conditions listed out on the application page to qualify for this offer ( including but not limited to " not having received the bonus on this card '' previously in my lifetime ) I received the card and started making purchases on it in order to meet the goal for the promotional offer. Between XX/XX/XXXX and XX/XX/XXXX ( 60 day period ), I spent {$3100.00} in eligible purchases towards this offer. In XXXX XXXX, I called Amex to inquire about the missing promotional points. At this point, I was told by the Customer service agent and her manager that I was INELIGIBLE for this offer. She confirmed that I was eligible for the offer when I applied but I was marked ineligible to receive this bonus on or around XX/XX/XXXX by the Membership Rewards team for reasons unknown. Upon questioning why this was not communicated to me immediately after the decision was made, she tells me that it is AMEX policy to not communicate these things out until the customer asks for it. To be clear, this " rejection '' decision was not communicated to me proactively in any form until I explicitly asked for it. Amex was perfectly happy to let me spend money while knowing all this while that they weren't going to honor my promotional offer. They offered to open a support case to investigate this and have NOT gotten back to me in over 2 months with any resolution. Problem 1 : Incredibly misleading advertising of the promotional offer and its eligibility conditions on the credit card application page and refusal to honor the offer that I was explicitly approved with Problem 2 : Shady business practice of silently refusing to honor the offer and not proactively communicating a decision that would actively affect my spend with them. For context, I've been a customer of Amex for 8 years now with a perfect track record of paying bills and I've been treated like dirt in this case.

Complaint: On XX/XX/2019 I applied for a Gold Delta SkyMiles Business Card in response to a promotional email I received. The promotion states approved card members will receive XXXX Bonus Miles after you make XXXX in purchases in the first 3 months and a {$50.00} statement credit after you make a XXXX purchase within the first 3 months. Also, there is no annual fee for the first year. After the first year, the annual fee is {$95.00}. I received the XXXX XXXX Sky Miles and the {$50.00} statement credit, but XXXX did not waive the annual fee for the first year. In response to my previous complaint with CFPB against the credit card company, XXXX stated this promotional offer is only for the Gold Delta SkyMiles consumer card. The enclosed promotional offer does not state this offer is only valid for the consumer card ( see attached ), nor was I told that when I applied for the credit card. This is nothing more than an illegal bait and switch tactic. I spoke with a representative this morning at XXXX. The representative stated she can't see this promotional offer I am referring to because it is expired. However, she said the promotions are the same for business and consumer credit cards.

Complaint: On XXXX, American Express responded to the following CFPB complaints : XXXX, XXXX, XXXX, and XXXX, and XXXX complaint : XXXX. In their response, they explained that for the American Express Gold Card that was opened on XXXX with the following benefits : XXXX Membership Rewards ( MR ) points after {$2000.00} or more in qualifying purchases are made on the Card within the first three months ( 92 days ) of Card Membership. A 20 % cash back ( up to {$100.00} ) as a statement credit at U.S. Restaurants within the first three months ( 92 days ) of Card Membership. The following language was in their application : This welcome offer is not available to applicants who have or have had this Card or the Premier Rewards Gold Card. We may also consider the number of American Express Cards you have opened and closed as well as other factors in making a decision on your welcome offer eligibility. Their explanation as to why I was ineligible for the benefits is as follows : " Based on your Card or welcome offer history, you, unfortunately, arent eligible for the welcome offer on this account. '' The response fails to mention that in my credit history, I have no prior history with American Express in terms of a American Express Gold Card, nor the American Express Premier Rewards Gold Card. The response also fails to mention that the " other factors '' that determine eligibility is intentionally vague as to give American Express carte blanche reason to deny bonus eligibility for any reason of their choosing and their response does not explicitly list the reason as to why am In eligible for the welcome bonus. Furthermore, American Express did not acknowledge that there is a {$250.00} annual fee that was charged and paid for on XXXX for the card, 24 days after the credit card was open. When opening the account with American Express, the promise of the bonus offer played a significant factor when signing the contract / agreement. Whereas I have agreed to pay an annual fee of {$250.00} for the card for each cardmember year, American Express had promised to provide certain card benefits in addition to welcome offer. American Express had failed to uphold their part of the agreement and as they have acknowledge in their response : " we did find times that we set inappropriate expectations about your welcome offer eligibility and we missed an opportunity to explain that you werent eligible for the welcome offer. '' American Express had 24 days between the card open date on XXXX and XXXX when the annual fee was charged to communicate that I was not eligible for the welcome offer. Had I been made aware that I would not be eligible for the welcome offer, I would have ceased use of the credit card and closed it immediately in favor of other, more reputable credit lenders with better benefits. It is incredibly disheartening to see that American Express, who I opened my first credit account with in XXXX, would become a disreputable credit lender that relies on making false promises for their accounts.
