Don't agree with fees charged
Complaint: I graduated on XXXX XXXX, XXXX. Toward the end of my six month grace period after graduation, I requested Forebearance for my XXXX loans with Sallie Mae. I was living in XXXX and Sallie Mae instructed my parents to call every three months to pay a fee and renew the forebearance. I was first charged a {$150.00} ( {$50.00} per loan capped at {$150.00} - this shows on my account payment history as {$25.00} for each loan ) fee for forebearance on XXXX/XXXX/XXXX. My parents called again and my next charge was completed on XXXX/XXXX/XXXX. My parents called again and my next charge was completed on XXXX/XXXX/XXXX. For my final 3 months of forebearance I had left ( forebearance may only be used for a total of 12 months ) I called Sallie Mae and was charged on XXXX/XXXX/XXXX. After this transaction my account showed that my next payment would not be due until XXXX/XXXX/XXXX. Recently, we began receiving calls that I owed a payment to Sallie Mae for the total amount of my monthly loans. I have spoken with Sallie Mae at least every other day for the past XXXX weeks. I continue to be told the problem will be resolved on my account and nothing changes. At the top of my account loan summary, there is an alert that all XXXX of my loans are past due. As you continue down and look at each loan, there is a statement below each that states " In Forebearance - No Payment Required ( estimated principal & interest payment due date XXXX/XXXX/XXXX. '' My transaction history shows late charges for each loan. My cosigner, in an effort to stop the constant telephone calls from Sallie Mae, was told he could pay an extra fee of {$150.00} for one more month of forebearance. This does not make sense because if I paid on XXXX XXXX my final three months of forebearance, then I ca n't understand why I received late charges on XXXX/XXXX/XXXX. If there truly was a problem with payment, no one informed us of this at any point when my parents or I spoke with Sallie Mae to renew my forebearance. I am completely frustrated trying to resolve this serious issue with Sallie Mae, who seems to have a different record than I am reading in my account. I can never speak with the same person, and I am assured the problem will be resolved within 24 hours on my account and it is not. I am concerned if Sallie Mae and I can not reach the point where all of this is resolved that it will unfairly affect my credit. Thank you for your time.

Having problems with customer service
Complaint: On XXXX XXXX, 2016 I spoke to Supervisor XXXX XXXX regarding my account. This is a summary of the undisputed facts. On XXXX 2016 I finished my XXXX and moved on to Florida for my XXXX. I submitted adequate documentation to all the different banks from which I have loans and requested a fellowship deferment. It was granted by all of them except by SalliMae. Unfortunately, I was no notify about it. On XXXX, I started to received automatized phone calls regarding a debt with Sallie Mae. I contacted SallieMae to inquire about this. I was told that they did not receive my deferment application. I confirmed the previous fax number and it was correct. I re-faxed the document and sent a mail copy. Two weeks later I continued to receive phone call from SallieMae, I contact SallieMae and I was told that my documents were being process and that it was an automatized system and they had no control to stop it. One week later the automatized phone calls became harassment about 10 a day. I called SallieMae one more time and was told once again that my documents were not there yet. I told them that this was impossible that I already confirmed with them that they received it. The person who answer the phone at SallieMae confirmed me that everything that we talked was documented but that for some unexplainable reason the document was no there. This time I was provided with a website in which I could upload the deferment form. I de-authorize SallieMae from contacting me by telephone. Once again, I contacted SallieMae during that week to confirm that the document arrived. I was told that everything was in order, that I do qualify and that it was a matter of processing. On XXXX, I received a phone call from an account manager XXXX to call back SallieMae regarding a balance in my account. This was surprise for me. I called the same day to the telephone number she provided and another employee talked to me. This person was very unprofessional and at some point I felt threaten by him. I tried to explain the situation and asked him to revise my file. He interrupted me and told me that the system indicated that I graduated. That I needed to pay over a thousand dollar immediately. That he already had raised a flag in my credit score and that he will continue to do so the XXXX of every month until I pay the money. Then he told me that the deferment period is only for 36 months and that I already use that period. The next day ( XX/XX/2016 ) I called my SallieMae account manager XXXX. She verified my record, confirmed that everything I told her was true and she apologized for the inconvenience. She told me that the documents were received in XXXX but were not submitted for processing. I asked to talked to a manager. She transferred me to XXXX XXXX. He went over my account and previous encounters. He also confirmed that EVERYTHING I said was correct. XXXX XXXX apologized as well and told me that he will make sure that the processing was adequate at this time. He also told me that in effect SallieMae had submitted my name to the Credit Bureau but that he personally will submit a Credit Rectification document. I told him that I understand that mistakes happen but this process have been very abusive to me and that at the moment it was difficult for me to trust SallieMae. I asked him for written evidence of their acknowledgement and that I wanted the specifics about the credit flag that they raised in my name. He told me that the only way I could have access to that information was through a legal process. Then he implied that if I decide to go through the legal means the process will be slower than using a credit rectification form. XXXX XXXX told me that I will receive a call on XXXX XXXX to confirm the submission of all documents. On Friday, XXXX XXXX I did not receive a call form SallieMae. I

Having problems with customer service
Complaint: My daughter neglected to pay her first three months of her SallieMae student loans that I had co-signed on. Once I became aware of this I immediately called SallieMae to pay the delinquent loans in full and pay them forward until XX/XX/XXXX. My credit score has been between XXXX-XXXX for the past 15 years. The delinquent loans ruined my credit, my score is XXXX. I am trying to refinance my home to consolidate these loans at a 3.6 % interest rate, rather than the 9 % current loan rate with SallieMae. I contacted them on XX/XX/XXXX asking them to send my Credit Union a letter on their letterhead explaining that I immediately paid the delinquent loans off and forward till XX/XX/XXXX and to note that they were in XXXX rather than XXXX, delinquent status. They told me that they would be mailing this out to me the following week. I was shocked that it could not be e-mailed to me and that I would have to wait for it to be 'snail mailed! '' They apologized for the inconvenience but would not email it to me. I made the request over the phone on XX/XX/XXXX, on XX/XX/XXXX I called SallieMea to ask if it had been sent and they said it went out on XX/XX/XXXX, 12 days after my request! This absurd " snail mail '' delay is holding up my opportunity to do a rapid reassessment of my credit score and re-finance my home. I called them again to ask if they would remove the delinquent payments from my records ( because I had paid them immediately once I found out they were delinquent, and paid them up until XX/XX/XXXX ). The customer service agent with SallieMae told me to write a letter and send it to them via the postal service i.e. " snail mail '' then they would have up to 30 days to reply! This is completely unacceptable customer service! I have no recourse but to do this and wait? What if they deny the request? Then I will have waited six weeks ( two weeks for it to get to the appropriate person and up to XXXX to answer and send it back to me ) to see if they will approve this request? What kind of customer service is this? Why ca n't these requests be expiated by electronic correspondence? I find this antiquated and troubling. I am trying to refinance my home and repay these loans, they are slowing the process to a sloth crawl! This is unacceptable and should be changed. It is XX/XX/XXXX, we do n't do important time sensitive transactions via snail mail when we have e-mail. Please let me know how you might help. Thanks you

Complaint: In 2013 I took a private student loan with Sallie Mae for my son who is still in school. I took a loan with a fixed interest percentage, and I 'm suppose to pay only interest while he is in school ; however, I always send an extra payment in order to decrease the loan. I have noticed that the monthly minimum amount changes, but I will not be able to tell you the exact amount because the do n't send statement and when I sign into the website they provide you a list of peymrnts received but they do n't provide how yo retrieve statements. Complaint: I have asked numerous times for help from Sallie Mae and continuously they have done nothing but offer forbearance I finally caught back up and again ended up falling behind. Today I received a call from their corprate bank asking to help resolve the issue. After several times of being cut off from speak the lady only repeated that they have given me the loan and now I need to pay them back. When I ask for options and help she instead of offering help from the company told me to ask my friends and family for money and told me to try filing for wellfare and food stamps. They refuse to offer me anything because my loan is so small. And said all they could do is come down a dollar on my loan.

Can't repay my loan

Student loan: Non-federal student loan

Can't get flexible payment options
Complaint: As excited as we were when our son just graduated college XX/XX/XXXX, we knew it would be just around the corner before the heavy burden of student loans approached. While he did find a job in his field in Tennessee, his salary is quite low and is enough to rent a decent apartment and take care of his day to day expenses. His loans will come to fruition XX/XX/XXXX but the correspondence has started coming in. He owes {$35000.00} to XXXX on subsidized and unsubsidized loans which he hopes to get assistance with based on his salary. We as parents owe an exorbitant amount in Parent Plus loans which assisted with his education and my husband is currently unemployed. Last but not least, my son ( I am his co-signor ) owes {$62000.00} in what we thought were federally backed up loans with Sallie Mae. My husband and I are also in high credit card debt, high interest rates ourselves and living on XXXX salary so needless to say we are scared to death of what lies in the future for our son and for us. When calling Sallie Mae today to talk about possible payment arrangements since we thought they were government backed loans, we were shocked to hear that there were no programs available to help students and that all of his loans were private which we totally did not know. They are an incredibly non transparent lender and we feel that they are predatory lenders at that. Financial ruin for both my son and us is in the future based on what we owe and the accruing interest. The only program offered was there {$150.00} fee every three months to put loans in forbearance with accruing interest. We were shocked. I 've read horror stories on Sallie Mae and there is no financial future for our kids or parents because of this. Why are there no programs for Income Based Repayment and Pay as You Earn to cap borrowers ' monthly payments relative to their income? Why does n't Navient step in to assist with these private loans as well? My husband and I are not stupid people, but there was never any lead to indicate that these were private loans. My son will not make it even if he gets forbearance ( that is just a stalling mechanism ). They make so much money from the loans that XXXX is servicing for them. Why ca n't they help the borrowers? How is a milleniall supposed to work towards financial goals and parents towards retirement goals. They charge credit card-like interest rates amongst a multitude of other problems. As I said above, most people think of Sallie Mae as a purveyor of federally-backed students loans with low, government-mandated interest rates, regulated deferred payments and hardship programs or waivers. They are blurry in their representation and we are so so disappointed and scared of what 's to come. Someone has to step in and do something. Our kids should not be penalized for wanting to get an education. Your help and advocacy would be most appreciated. Thank you for your time.

Can't repay my loan

Student loan: Non-federal student loan

Can't get flexible payment options
Complaint: I spoke with Sallie Mae regarding my student loan repayment options and requested an alteration to the length of the loan to reduce my monthly bill. However, they did n't even think for a second, and simply said " No, we do n't do that. You owe what is on your monthly statement. ", then asked if I wanted to make a payment. When I said that I did not want to make a payment at that time he said have a good day and hung up. Because the federal government has decided to let student loan providers XXXX anyone trying to better themselves they apparently do n't care at all about their clients once they have you on the hook. They know that there are no available options for people like me, legal or otherwise, to even get help on handling this debt. I did n't ask them to forgive my debt, and I was trying to offer a way I could pay them back, but since they are above the law they know they can just tell me to XXXX and simply garnish my wages. I am now in a situation where I am having to consider filing for bankruptcy. If Sallie Mae could work with people there would n't be so many individuals in default on loans, but I know I ca n't do anything about this debt, so I have to see if I can do something about other debt.

Can't repay my loan

Student loan: Non-federal student loan

Can't get flexible payment options
Complaint: My wife took out several loans in the past with Sallie Mae, that were federal loans and she was able to consolidate them, however while I was going to school I took out the same loans but did not know that this particular loan had become a private loan when Sallie Mae broke away and became a private bank. I now have over {$45000.00} in student loans with Sallie Mae along with {$60000.00} in consolidated loans and was told that my monthly payments would be about {$550.00} on top of my wife 's student loan payments and my consolidated payments, leaving us with a {$1200.00} student loan payment each month. I explained that I could not afford this payment and needed to know what my options where. i was told I could defer the payments for 3 months but would have to pay a {$150.00} in order to apply for the forbearance. When I asked what my other choices where they told me that I would have to prove i could not afford my payments and that they could possibly lower the payment but this would extend it from a 12 year loan to a 20 year loan. I have not had good service from the company and many have no idea what they are talking about. I was told that i could consolidate this loan even though it was private, I was told I could do a year forbearance, and I was also told that I did not have to pay any fees. This loan company seems very incompetent and only worried about what they will get paid. When i finally spoke with a supervisor I asked " what do i do if I can not afford this loan, what are my options? '' I was basically told that there were no options except to pay the {$150.00} for the forbearance for 3 months or pay a lower amount or pay the loan off ( i ca n't afford to make payments and I am going to pay the loan off? ). So what was left is to not make payments because I can not afford them, kill my credit for 7 years as well as having my wages garnished ( if that is even possible with a private loan ). Someone really needs to look into the companies practices as I was told also by a rep that this was not originally a private loan but became a private loan when the company split.

Can't decrease my monthly payments
Complaint: I attended a private college, and in order to do so, look out nearly {$100000.00} in student loans, {$78000.00} of which are private loans through Sallie Mae. For the first year of payments, I was on the graduated repayment plan, so XXXX of the XXXX loans I have through them had significantly lower payments for the first year. Now, that plan is expiring in XXXX. For the first year, I also rotated a few in and out of forbearance in order to get my footing in the professional world and adjust to paying loans and living expenses. For the past year, I have been paying Sallie Mae about {$400.00} a month, and have never been late or missed a payment. Now, beginning in XXXX, I am expected to pay {$850.00} a month, which is half of my income in one month. I own a home and car, and have other living expenses as well. Sallie Mae literally does not care and will not listen to anything I have to say about what I am able to pay in a month, which is about {$500.00}. I even called their payments department and they said they are completely and utterly unwilling to work with me on a payment plan unless I just stop making payments -- and they were rude about it. I have never had a late payment or missing one in the year I have been making payments. I find it absolutely appalling that the only way they will work out a payment plan is if someone simply stops paying on an account. I find this entire situation absolutely ridiculous since I am doing everything in my power to pay them what I can and there is XXXX care, compassion or advice on their end.
