Dealing with my lender or servicer

Student loan: Non-federal student loan

Keep getting calls about my loan
Complaint: I am writing this letter to address a series of student loans bills that I 've incorrectly received as a result of a misunderstanding with Sallie Mae regarding my enrollment status at XXXX University. It is my hope that upon reviewing my testimony that you will be able to help me in resolving this problem. My current predicament is the result of an unknown error which occurred during my XX/XX/XXXX semester. I attended classes with XXXX and received grades all throughout the semester. It was only brought to my attention just after the semester had ended, while preparing for my XX/XX/XXXX semester, that the university had no record of my attendance during the XX/XX/XXXX. Evidently, in XX/XX/XXXX when I had applied for a loan for the XX/XX/XXXX semester, Sallie Mae had never transferred the funds to XXXX University, and consequently the university did not recognize my attendance during that time. Despite the appeals from my professors, the university deemed that they had no record of my enrollment after XX/XX/XXXX, resulting in XXXX and Sallie Mae proceeding to begin billing me for student loan payments under the assumption that I had withdrawn from school. In XX/XX/XXXX, upon learning of the full extent of this clerical error, I was unable to pay the XX/XX/XXXX bill and was forced to cancel the semester. At this time, I was completely locked out of the university 's system until the bill was paid or semester was canceled, and was therefore unable to register classes in time to meet the XX/XX/XXXX start date. After making a complete assessment of my standing with the university through many meetings, I immediately re-enrolled as soon as I was granted access with XXXX to resume classes in the XX/XX/XXXX and have remained a XXXX ever since. I have attempted to rectify this situation with Sallie Mae and XXXX through repeated written correspondence and phone calls and have even made multiple deferred payments. These efforts were successful with XXXX, as they recognized the error and cleared things up swiftly. Sallie Mae, on the other hand, has ignored my requests to resolve this and has instead incorrectly charged off the two loans mentioned above to a of debt collection agency. Additionally, this situation has negatively impacted both my credit history and my father 's who is a co-signer on the loans. It is my understanding that student loan bills would cease at this time until after my graduation given that I am XXXX at XXXX University, and have been since the XX/XX/XXXX. It is my hope that upon reviewing my testimony you will be able to help me in resolving this problem so that I do not continue to be wrongfully billed for these loans. Thank you.

Trouble with how payments are handled
Complaint: My daughter received a loan from Sallie Mae for tuition this semester, and I co-signed. To keep the budget manageable for her, I 'm making the monthly payments while she is in school. When I got the first bill I signed up for auto debit ( i.e., Direct Payment via ACH ). They provide a .25 % discount on the loan rate. I provided RT/DDA etc, and was n't paying much attention on the amount. The first payment is due XXXX XXXX, so I just checked again, and I 'm signed up to pay the minimum, so thought I 'd call them to see how I could bump that up a bit on a recurring basis each month to shorten the loan repayment period ( there was no info on their website about how to do this ). But Sallie Mae does n't allow it!!! Sallie Mae only accepts the minimum payment when the borrower signs up for auto debit. This binds the borrower to a longer loan repayment period - and earns more interest $ $ for Sallie Mae. When I called, they confirmed that the system only allows the minimum payment for auto debit, and that to pay more you have to send a check or make an additional payment via online banking, which is not customer friendly - and less convenient as it adds another step. This smacks of corporate shenenagans - offering a .25 % discount for auto debit, but then only allowing minimum payments for the benefit of Sallie Mae. I mean, think of all the poor graduates who want to use the convenience of ACH debit to manage their expenses, and now they get locked into paying more interest because the life of the loan gets extended.

Need information about my balance/terms
Complaint: I took out a loan for US {$13000.00} from Sallie Mae to pay for my first year of XXXX tuition at XXXX and, after the semester started, requested a refund of the small cash difference. After much argument and delay, XXXX 's sent me a refund. However, there is still roughly US {$340.00} missing and unaccounted for, despite my formal XX/XX/2016 complaint [ attached to this CFPB complaint ] to XXXX ( who had no response ), the Department of Education ( who had no response ), and Sallie Mae ( who claimed it 's not their problem ). At this point, I consider the money missing/stolen, yet I am still paying interest and principal on these missing funds. Moreover, the " it 's not our problem '' approach from Sallie Mae -- my lender -- is as wildly unacceptable as the non-response of XXXX 's to inquiries from both myself and Sallie Mae.

Getting a loan

Student loan: Non-federal student loan

Can't qualify for a loan
Complaint: My sister is a student and has bad credit so she asked my wife and I to co-sign on her loan. My wife applied and was rejected. I then tried ( my income is much higher ) and I was rejected. I called to ask how this was possible ( I have a high salary and an XXXX XXXX score ). Sallie Mae explained that it was a hard rejection because of my sisters credit history. I told them that it was not reasonable for them to have me apply for as a co-signer when they knew all along, that it would be rejected. This means i got dinged on my credit score for applying for a loan and I show that it was rejected. Their response was that I should have applied over the phone instead of using the link in the email I got -- they would have told me it would have been denied. This is not fair and could easily be avoided if the application process checked the primary borrower first and only solicited the second person if there was a chance of acceptance with the co-signer. The CSR said they wo n't fix it and they would not escalate my complaint.

Having problems with customer service
Complaint: I have private loans with Sallie Mae that my sister was nice enough to co-sign for so I could go back to school. After graduation I contacted them about removing my sister as my co-signer. I was n't aware that they had certain criteria that needed to be met before doing this. I went through the motions and made sure everything they required I had completed. I applied for the co-signer release in XXXX XXXX. They denied the release stating that I did n't make the XXXX consecutive monthly payments. After researching my statements I saw that in XXXX XXXX I made the payment on the due date, but since it did n't post until the following date they claim it was late. So I continued to make my monthly payments and well before the due date until XXXX XXXX. After making the XXXX XXXX payment, I again applied for the co-signer release. Again, I was denied. This time they state my credit score does not meet their XXXX requirements. The score listed on the letter I received from Sallie Mae is about XXXX points less than what other sites are reporting my score at. Sallie Mae 's letter says the date they pulled my credit was XXXX/XXXX/XXXX and the other sites I use to monitor my credit say the information was updated XXXX/XXXX/XXXX. After calling their customer service and speaking with them, they told me it 's not my score that affected the decision, it 's the fact that I do n't make enough money to handle the repayment of my loans on my own. I have been paying the loans by myself since I graduated. My co-signer has never had to dish out even one penny to assist in my repayment. In addition to this, my boss has been kind enough to assist me in repaying my student loans as part of a tuition reimbursement program. I have a letter, on business letterhead, stating that they are going to be making the payments on my behalf the rest of the term of the loan. They are basically going to write me a check every month for the total of my monthly payment, I will deposit into my account, and make the payments like I have been doing. This situation is also affecting my sister ( co-signer ). She has been looking at houses for over year. Until she has her name removed from my loans, she ca n't proceed with purchasing a home as she has her own student loans in here name and the bank wo n't finance her with the total loan debt of both her personal loans and mine that she co-signed for. In XXXX when the co-signer release was denied she put off house hunting until I became compliant in XXXX XXXX. She 's in a position now where she HAS to find her own place but ca n't move forward until she is released as the co-signed. I do n't understand, I have made the payments on time with no assistance from anyone else, I made a decent salary, and now I have a financial guarantee with my boss essentially making the payments for me. I know my credit score is n't the best, I did go through a debt consolidation a few years ago which drastically lowered my score, but I am less than a year from completing that. All but XXXX account has been paid off through the program. My only opens loans are student loans and auto loans. I have XXXX judgement from a creditor that I had enrolled in the program, but that judgement was satisfied. And I have XXXX medical bills in collections that I am currently working on getting paid off.

Can't repay my loan

Student loan: Non-federal student loan

Can't get flexible payment options
Complaint: I graduated a little over 2 years ago and my experience with Sallie Mae has been abysmal to say the least. There has been a lack of continuity from customer service, I have been yelled at by managers, and no one ever seems to know what is going on with my account. I was enrolled in their term-rate modification program and made my 3 qualifying payments on time. I specifically asked to have auto-drafts on the XXXX of each month. I initially ran into problems when my account manager accidentally enrolled me in the program with the wrong date. Subsequently, my account was charged for the amount and incurred overdraft fees for Sallie Mae 's error. I called and informed them of the issue, and they stated I would need to print and fax over the overdraft fees so that they could resolve the situation I do this and a week goes by they claim they had n't received anything ( even though I received a fax confirmation ). After running in circles with Sallie Mae I finally get a manager after calling at an inconvenient specific day and time and he has me email him the statement of charges. Everything is rectified and I begin the program. I was leery of setting up auto draft payments after the nightmare I experienced, but I did anyway to remain in good standing with my creditor and ultimately be responsible. Much to my dismay, and to no surprise my account again is drafted on the XXXX of the 4th month 1. for an amount that was not agreed upon ( less than the agreed upon amount ) 2. for a date that was not agreed upon. I call Sallie Mae they are unaware of the agreed upon amount and they are emphatic that the date in question was correct. I am now over a month behind on my student loan payment and had to close my bank account because the overdraft fees and surcharges were well over {$500.00}. Sallie Mae is worthless, incompetent, and criminal. If at all cost I would avoid doing any business with them. I would n't borrow water from Sallie Mae if they were selling it they are certified crooks with little interest in the consumer satisfaction.

Complaint: I am involved in a court case involving child custody, and based upon the court hearing, there is some indication that Sallie Mae may have released my confidential loan information to parties that are not listed on the loan. I have read their confidentiality policy, and what information they release and which parties they are authorized to release it to and I know for a fact that I did not authorize a release of the information to any of the parties that were in the hearing and I know that none of them are the listed parties that Sallie Mae can release my loan information to. Additionally, there is some indication that the parties involved in the law suit ( which are not involved in the loan ) made a fraud allegation in regards to my loan that are unsupported so now the loan is in default.
