Trouble with how payments are being handled
Complaint: On XX/XX/2018 I submitted {$5000.00} as payoff on one of my daughter 's student loans. In the process of submitting the payment, their website locked up. I re-entered the information and submitted again. On the second submission, I received a confirmation number. The next morning I checked my bank statement and realized the money come out of my account twice.
I contacted Sallie Mae immediately and they confirmed that they received the payment twice and I had a credit balance of {$5000.00}. They informed me that I needed to email them proof that the money had come out of my account twice and to explain what happened. I did so immediately. They informed me they would expedite the request since it was such a large amount.
I waited a few days and still had not received my money back. I called Sallie Mae again for a second time and they informed me that it could be 7-10 business days before I got my money back which would have been Thursday, XX/XX/XXXX. I waited until Friday, XX/XX/XXXX and called them back for the third time. I went through the whole process again. She again, for the third time, confirmed they had my money and yes it was due to me ; however, 10 business days would be Tuesday,XX/XX/XXXX.
I still do not have the {$5000.00} in my account and it has caused a financial hardship on me. I know in the banking world, they have 48 hours to credit your money back. Why is Sallie Mae allowed to keep my money for 14 days and still counting? Who regulates them? Is this legal?

Problem lowering your monthly payments
Complaint: I graduated in XX/XX/XXXX of XX/XX/XXXXfrom XXXX University with approximately 120K in student debt, approximately 85K of that with Sallie Mae, the rest with XXXX XXXX federal lenders.
My payments for Sallie Mae started 6 months after graduation and fortunately I was able to find employment in my educational field ; however, my monthly payments started at {$940.00} ( four loans with interest rates averaging 8 % ). Even with the job in my educational field, it was nearly impossible to make those payments every month so I found myself going into forbearance every couple of months so I wouldn't mess up mine or my co-signers credit. Every time I would go into forbearance, my payments after forbearance would be higher than before AND my interest rates would increase every time. It is now XX/XX/XXXX of XX/XX/XXXX ( been struggling to make payments sine XX/XX/XXXX ) and I have used up all of my forbearance and my interest rates now average 10 %, and payments being {$980.00}.
Last month I got an email stating that I had been qualified for " interest only '' payments for 12 months and they had failed to notify me. Even though I hate the idea of making interest only payments, I feel like I had no choice to opt in because I can't afford {$980.00} per month. So ... I call Sallie Mae and have them run through the numbers for me regarding how much my interest only payments would be and I almost fainted .... {$740.00} for JUST INTEREST starting XX/XX/XXXX. I am getting to the point where I just want to give up. How is it ethically possible for a company to charge that much interest for people who literally cant afford it and who keep calling month after month to get interest/payments lowered. I understand I have a responsibility to pay back my student loans, but not at a 10 % interest rate, which just keeps climbing.
Unfortunately, I do not have all of the dates of the numerous phone calls I've made to them and how many times I've tried to get my interest lowered so I can afford payments ; however, I'm getting to the point where I can't even live a happy life anymore. And the thought of THIS being my life for the next 20+ year just doesn't seem worth it to me. There is no point in living when you can't actually live happily. I can't afford to feed myself let alone buy a house or start a family, etc. Even when I called Sallie Mae to go through my finances and was crying on the phone the person from Sallie Mae laughed over the phone and said " you're not going to like what I have to say '' and that was that. He refused to consider the fact that I need to go to therapy because I have been extremely depressed regarding my finances. He refused to consider the other debts that I have that I would like to pay off but can't because of Sallie Mae. He refused to show any kind of empathy for me and my 10 % interest rates. To me, this is EXTREMELY UNETHICAL.
**NOTE - When I filed my taxes, I found that between my federal and private student loans I paid ( no exaggeration ) just over $ 13K in JUST INTEREST in XX/XX/XXXX.

Received bad information about your loan
Complaint: PRIVATE SALLIE MAE STUDENT LOAN This letter is in regards to a Private Student Loan with a Cosigner.
Loan Amount - {$30000.00} Paid $ XXXX/ month for over 6 months and the loan went up to {$33000.00} In the past 3 months has gone from XXXX - XXXX An absolute burdon that was wrongfully forced on us.
These statements have been clearly and verbally stated several times to each loan servicer.
Major Immediate Grievance : Severe and Total Harassment of Cosigner to the point where cosigner suffered a XXXX on XX/XX/XXXX due to the XXXX from Sallie Mae 's harassment and FIDM 's fraud in signing and taking this loan. ( Document included ) She is suffering from major illness from this loan and the Loan Servicers continue to harass and call at work, and have called repeatedly and continuously. They have called at times when they knew they should not call ( late hours or during a doctors appointment ). They have repeatedly called work even though she has explicitly stated that her employer does NOT approve of these calls. They also harassed a 3rd party ( Co-worker ) about this alleged debt and used abusive language when talking to her. She has also expressed distress about the harassment and wishes to seek action. Due to this severe harassment and incessant nagging, I am concerned for health and well being! All the calls were recorded on Sallie Mae 's part and show how she is completely distraught, light headed, and having a XXXX XXXX on the phone. The doctors have stated that her XXXX is due to the XXXX from the burden of this loan and the harassment that she has been enduring. The financial information Sallie Mae claims to have is not correct. She has not been able to receive the imperative medical care she needs to survive because Sallie Mae has stated that the money on her credit card needs to be used to pay this student loan. And now after the XXXX the doctors are insisting she seek the help she needs ASAP.
NATURE OF THE LOAN : ( FRAUD ) FIDM - Borrows Defense Against Repayment - Fraudulent School This loan is under a great deal of scrutiny due to the school this loan was for, FIDM in XXXX XXXX. A demand letter has been sent to the school in regards to the Borrowers Defense Against Repayment. FIDM is a for profit school that lied, deceived and outright illegally pushed us into taking this loan. I was supposed to receive a scholarship and was repeatedly reassured by the advisor, XXXX XXXX, that I had a very high chance of receiving the scholarship ; praying on my naiveness and financial need. I exhausted all options to get help interviewing for 2 XXXX positions with great qualifications to do it and they ignored me, denying me any help to pay for my tuition. I was then told about 2 weeks before classes were to begin that the results for that years scholarship were delayed for some unknown reason and that she would hate for such a fabulous student to miss out on being enrolled. Sending me to get approved for a private loan through Sallie Mae. XXXX XXXX called everyday to " check in '' and make sure I was working on getting my loan. ( Phone records can be retrieved if needed ; emails are available ). It seems the for profit school is working with private loan lenders to secure a win win situation for the two leaving students with an overpriced education and no jobs available in that field. FIDM and Sallie Mae are clearly taking advantage of students who come from lower income families by enticing them with false promises of a unique education and job opportunities upon graduation. The discrimination continued during my schooling with the most notable time being when my intellectual property and business design specs were stolen by a fashion line known to XXXX during a showing of my work. I was one of the top XXXX XXXX students with a XXXX and they lied about the jobs available upon graduation and the salaries available. This university is an abusive college that does not prepare you for a career in your field and completely and utterly works with private loan institutions.
Financial and Medical situation of Student : 1. Unemployed for 2 years 2. Credit Card Debt 3. Homeless/on assistance 4. XXXX affected by school 's fraud and discrimination Financial and Medical Situation of Cosigner : 1. Suffered a XXXX XX/XX/XXXX due to harassment about this loan and delayed proper medical care due to payment of this loan 2. Credit card Debt 3. {$35000.00} Medical Bills left from terrible divorce, family member..
We have asked repeatedly for a copy of the original contract signed. Nothing has been received yet ...
This loan should not have been given to this student and the school should not have pushed the student into taking out such a high interest private loan with no prospect of a job that could help pay this back with the degree. The amount Sallie Mae claims they want to settle this loan is not possible and they know that. It seems Sallie Mae is refusing to help make an affordable settlement so that the account compounds since it is an unlawfully high interest rate. By not working with us, by harassing us when we are picking up and talking to you created an unhealthy and permanently disabling situation.

Complaint: Sallie Mae : Refund Check Status I refinanced my loan with XXXX XXXX because my interest rate kept going up and each payment barely made a difference to my balance. XXXX XXXX approved my new loan and paid off Sallie Mae leaving a balance of {$280.00}. I called them multiple times to reissue me a refund check since that {$280.00} belongs to me.
I called in XXXX and was told the check was issued on XX/XX/XXXX.
XX/XX/XXXX Called Wednesday XX/XX/XXXX to give me a status on my refund check.I was told yet again, the check was sent on the XXXXXX/XX/XXXX. Yet it has not arrived. Yet it has not arrived. They also told me they will take 10 days to stop the check and resend a new one.
XX/XX/XXXX Called Sallie Mae on the status of my refund check. I was told that check # XXXX was reissued on Tuesday XX/XX/XXXX. The check should take 7-10 business days to arrive.
XX/XX/XXXX It is XX/XX/XXXX. 12 business Days after check # XXXX was reissued. I still have not received my refund check. I did receive a letter sent to my cosigner mentioning the amount I paid in interest for XXXX. So no I am wondering. How did I receive this letter before the actual refund check.

Can't get other flexible options for repaying your loan
Complaint: I do not make enough money to pay over {$700.00} a month to Sallie Mae due to the troubles of finding a job after college. I am currently working as a server, along with bills ; a {$110.00} car payment, {$700.00} in rent, $ XXXX {$110.00} a month for utilities, ~ {$170.00} for federal student loans, and not mention the costs to survive. On XX/XX/XXXX around XXXX I was told I could go into a program that would put my loans up to date. I would have ~ {$270.00} taken out of my account automatically for 3 months. This would be the new payment for 2 years and I might be eligible to reapply after this period of time. I was told that it would also lower my interest rate to ~3 % during this time. My co-signer also is unable to help pay with these loans. These were the terms set due to her financial situation as well. Two payments were taken out, yet we were still getting past due notifications. To understand why this was happening I called Sallie Mae on XX/XX/XXXX to see what the confusion was. As it turns out, without giving us proper notification, we were denied for this program and the already hefty XXXX a month has now grown over two months. They breached our contract with deception of the worded confirmation they sent us in the mail, yet did not send anything mentioning our " denied '' form about the program they so happily took money for. I was not told anything until I called. They record all of their calls, with our call I believe I can prove that they went against their word. This yet another unethical deception of Sallie Mae that any XXXX search can bring up. Salt to the wound, we asked of we could get any of this in writing and was told they " don't do that ''.

Denied loan
Complaint: During the XXXX school year, I was enrolled in the school counseling licensure program. The curriculum included a year-long internship at two separate school sites, totaling about 30 hours/week. These work-hours did not include separate coursework/final projects/licensing. So while the amount of credit-hours for this coursework was considered " part-time '' the actual time investment was more than full-time ( 40 hours/week ).
Here 's the catch, and this is importantthese internships we UNPAID. As a student with an Expected Family Contribution of XXXX dollars, I obviously had to apply for a private student loan to pay for tuition and cost of living.
I was approved for a private loan of {$20000.00}, which I split into thirds for disbursement at Fall/Winter/Spring terms.
After the Spring term disbursement, I had discovered a mistake in the number of credit hours I had been billed for during the Fall/Winter terms. XXXX did not create the proper course numbers for students in the licensure-only program, and so I was signed up for the same course that the Masters students had to take, which included a different number of credit-hours than I actually needed.
This mistake meant that I had been signed up for 5 or more credit-hours for Fall/Winter terms. What I did not know, and nobody told me about, was that if a student takes less than 5 credit-hours, they aren't able to receive financial aid in the form of student loans. So when Spring term came around, I signed up for the classes I needed, and received my 3rd and final loan disbursement. At this point, I had a closer look at my completed coursework, and discovered that I had completed too many credits than what the licensure program entailed. This is when I discovered that the school had made a mistake, and did not create the proper course number for licensure-only students. Not needing to pay for extra credits to qualify for licensure, my professor made an adjustment to the number of credits I had enrolled in.
This put me below the 5-credit threshold for financial aid. As a result, the school added a " negative credit '' to my account, which apparently is another way of saying I had to return the 3rd and final disbursement of my PRIVATE STUDENT LOAN. Apparently they would have taken the money and returned it to my lender. So, I contacted my lenderthey didn't want me to return the money. They wanted me to complete my licensure.
I understand the rational hereif you are only taking a few credits, you are expected to be working, making money, and paying for those credits out-of-pocket. Sounds good. But in my situation, I was completing a full-time internship. And the course for this internship only involved 2 CREDIT HOURS.
Essentially, the financial aid system is saying that in addition to the full-time internshipnot to mention the absurd amount of work required for completing the state-licensure requirement on top of all thatI should be working full-time to pay for both tuition and cost-of-living.
Obviously that scenario is impossible, so I was left with 2 options : drop the whole program and go back to work, or take out an additional loan. So obviously I would have to take out another loan, because I need to pay for my cost-of-living while completing an unpaid internship. But this is where it all gets crazy-making. So I would have applied for an additional ~ {$3000.00} to pay for the " negative balance '' on my XXXX billing account. But I didn't borrow money from XXXX, so they would have returned it to my loan lender, after borrowing it from the lender.
This is totally insane.

Received bad information about your loan
Complaint: RE : XXXX XXXX XXXX Loan I am writing to share with your office the completely disgusting manner in which I was treated while contacting your office to request a forbearance. It should be noted that I was granted a forbearance inXX/XX/XXXXand was advised to recontract Sallie Mae to request additional months of same. I did as instructed and contacted SallieMae via phone in early XXXX, after an approximate 7-9 minute hold, the representative returned to the line to state that I had contacted SallieMae " too early '' to request the deferment. I was at a loss as to how on earth one could ever attempt to handle a financial matter could ever occur " too early. '' It should be noted that I made the two XXXX good faith payments prior to speaking to XXXX and her manager. On XX/XX/XXXX I contacted SallieMae via phone once again in an attempt to obtain loan forbearance. I had the unfortunate displeasure to speaking with XXXX ( # XXXX. ) I explained to XXXX my reason for calling. XXXX explained that she must ask me some questions before processing the deferment. I agreed to this and she proceeded to ask me two questions. She asked me was I working and the name of my employer. I provided the information to her and she then proceeded to ask me my title. I provided my title ( XXXX XXXX ) and she then asked me could my cosigner assist with payments. I explained to her that my cosigner was my mother whom I presently reside with sans rent. I also explained to her that my mother paid a significant portion of my living expenses and would not be able to make the loan payments. XXXX then requested that I hold the line for a moment. It should be noted that XXXX did NOT ask me for my salary, etc. The only information she asked about concerning my employment was my title, and the name of my company.
I agreed and waited on hold for approximately six minutes. I then heard XXXX speaking but it sounded as though she were not speaking directly into her telephonic device. It seemed as though XXXX had inadvertently taken the call off hold and was unaware that I could hear her every word. I heard XXXX and a male conversing about me. XXXX was essentially relaying portions of our conversation to this gentleman. While this is harmless enough, she was relaying this conversation in a mocking fashion complete with her personal commentary/opinions relative same. She stated to the gentleman that " She says she lives with her mom and she don't pay no rent, and her mom pays her car insurance. '' " She then went on to say " Then what do you pay if your mom pays everything. '' At that time, the male she was speaking with, presumably her manager verbalized his agreement. She stated " She's claims that she called in last month and we wouldn't give her a deferment. '' It should be noted that she did not attempt to research, validate or invalidate this information. I am at a loss as to why her manager did not instruct her to verify this information since she was so skeptical. She went on to lie and state " She don't even got a XXXX dollars. '' This is the point where XXXX 's conversation went from disrespectful and contemptuous to fraudulent. XXXX never asked me about making any payments and I certainly did not express to her that I " don't got a XXXX dollars. '' I am sure you are aware that your representatives document the verbal exchanges between themselves and customers in the customer 's account, this exchange means that XXXX likely noted my account fraudulently as well.
XXXX eventually returned to the line seeming to have gotten a bit more contemptuous after speaking to her coworker about me. Her tone was bolder, and her attitude much closer to being disrespectful. She very quickly informed me that it was unlikely that my " Forb '' would be approved as I was working as an XXXX and had income. She also stated that she had discussed the issue with her manager. She made reference to her manager being a male. I presume this is the gentleman that she was speaking to about me. I immediately asked for his name and ID number. She stated with a significant contemptuous attitude that she was trying to get me back on track with my payments. I listened to her convoluted spiel which consisted of her claiming that since I am working I should be able to make my payments. I am certain that she unilaterally reached this conclusion based on her opinion rather than he facts which she failed to gather. I once again requested the name and number of her manager. She provided me with a first name and stated that she did not know his last name or ID number. She stated that she would let me speak to him so as to obtain that information for myself. This is yet another example of her abhorred customer service. The manager was just right there engaging in disparaging comments about me, how on earth did obtaining his name require me to be placed on yet another hold.
After about a two-minute hold, a gentleman addressed me and introduced himself as XXXX. I requested his last name and ID number to which he responded " XXXX XXXX. '' I thanked him for this information and terminated the call. As stated numerous times, XXXX never asked me about my salary, expenses etc. I am at a loss as to how an account representative charged with gather information concerning financial matters could fail to ask about such relevant information. The most obvious conclusion would be that XXXX simply chooses to ignore SallieMae protocol and instead based the level of assistance she provided on her mood and disposition. It is entirely possible that her oversight was due to her rush to speak negatively about her customers while she places them on excessive holds. To that end, I am at a loss as to how her manager did not correct her. While front line employees can fail to properly complete tasks, their immediate supervisors are charged with ensuring that the front line employees perform their jobs satisfactorily. This manager failed to do that as evidenced by their conversation. Not only did he fail to remind her that she was speaking negatively about a customer ( he had no way of knowing that she was making up the conversation ), he too failed to ask about income vs expenses etc.
I am at a loss as to how on earth these two individuals would be allowed to behave in this manner. Aside from the fact that their behavior was disrespectful, rude, and ignorant. XXXX made fraudulent statements to her manager. I never stated to her that I was unable to make a XXXX payment. She also failed to inquire about income, expenses and how they would impact my ability to repay.
In light of the above, I am requesting that someone from your office contact me concerning this matter. Specifically I would like to know what information these two associates placed in my account as I absolutely heard XXXX make untrue statements and declarations that I never made. I implore you to review the recording related to this call. This call occurred on Wednesday, XX/XX/XXXX at approximately XXXX from phone number XXXX. I look forward to your response.

I told the rep that I will not be able to afford this amount, because I am still doing the same job and I am not working on my major, and my hourly is the same little money, she told me to wait and someone else will help me with my monthly bill that I will pay. I waited for 45 minutes and no one come over the phone to help me. I have being paying this loan since XXXX and the loan never decrease, and instead of decreasing we see that the amount it getting 3 times the money that we borrowed. Sallie Mae is driving us insane by calling us at the home phone any time of the day or night and on the cells phone, also the reference of people that we gave when we were filling for the loan, five to ten time a day even on the weekend, and the rep keep harassing us and so on. We are tired of these non sense from Sallie Mae. If we did not make any payment, we will understand these harassment. we do not know where we going to find all this kind of these money to pay total of XXXX every month because of pass due. We are struggling to pay everything, but we still manage to make the effort and pay our bills. What we are thinking right now, is that going to school is a burden, because not only we can not find a job on the major that we earned and secondly we have to go through to all of this things, which is a shame. We still have the dream for a master program, the question is how we are going to afford to pay for this dream?

Trouble with how payments are being handled
Complaint: Sallie Mae has been applying anywhere from one-third to over half of my monthly payments towards interest, rather than all of it applying to the principal, which is what I was under the assumption it was going toward. This is a trick to get me to pay more money in the long run and I did not approve it. I wanted all of my payments to go toward the principal amount of the loan. This is scamming business. Also, they have raised my monthly payments rates despite me having taken out locked interest rate loans. I am supposed to pay the same amount every month and they 've changed it in the last year without any indication that it was being changed or why. This company is a scam.

Trouble with how payments are being handled
Complaint: I agreed with Sallie Mae to withdraw auto payments from my account so I can get a reduction on my student loan interest. My many months they have failed to withdraw money from my checking account making my student loans higher with accrued interest and fees. I called many times and online it says that Im enrolled in auto debit but they dont withdraw the money making my loans higher in accrued interest and my payments higher to a point that I cant afford it. Every month Sallie Mae is suppose to take an amount of XXXX dollars from my debit card and they dont. Now I have accumulated fees and interest. Im tired of calling them and solving the issue every month. Sallie Mae is affecting my peace of mind and well being with this issue. I want to pay my student loan and I would like to see my student loans being pay off.
Company Response: Company believes complaint is the result of an isolated error Closed with non-monetary relief
