Advertising

Credit card or prepaid card: General-purpose prepaid card

Confusing or misleading advertising about the card
Complaint: On XX/XX/2019, I received an unsolicited prepaid mastercard ( debit ) issued by NETSPEND. I am concerned that I received this card in the first place. I did call the opt out # on the card and told them that I did not want ( nor requested this card ). When I asked how my name got into their data base I was told that " probably someplace you shopped ... gave your phone # to '' was the originator. My concern is that it is dangerous for unsuspecting consumers to receive such cards without their permission

Unexpected or other fees

Credit card or prepaid card: General-purpose prepaid card

Complaint: I was sent a Brinks prepaid Mastercard from Netspend today ( XX/XX/19 ). I did not apply for this product nor did I authorize any issuing of this card. The card was unexpected and was ready to activate. I contacted the provided numbers on the activation sticker and the mailed information. I was not able to speak to anyone. I was just funneled back to the activation hotline. When I contacted Netspend I had the same issue. I was sent back to the activation hotline. If this product had fallen into the wrong hands this would have been a disaster. I did not activate the card due to the fact that I did not agree or request it to be mailed ot me. I also didn't think I should agree to terms of service once again because I did not request the card in the first place.

Opening an account

Checking or savings account: Checking account

Account opened as a result of fraud
Complaint: On XX/XX/2019, I received a piece of mail from a company called Netspend. I open the mail to find an offer to sign up for a prepaid debit card. I usually don't get authentic cards in the mail when I get offers, but this was a legit card that was created without my consent with instructions included to activate the card. Upon calling the number to question why I received this card -- it was evident this was not fraudulent -- because the automated recording gave an explanation as to why I received this offer. In that same call I chose to " cancel the card and opt-out of future mailings '' I'm sending this message to you because I take my credit health every seriously. It's very insulting and disgusting that Netspend is allowed to create a real account without my consent. With all of the fraud and money laundering that exists today, I could have very well thrown away the mail ( which I usually do ) that contains an actual card, and could have become a victim of fraud. It is extremely negligent for them to practice this type of advertising. This may not be fraud from an individual, but this is actually fraudulent from Netspend. I would like to know the steps an individual can take to file a lawsuit against a company like this.

Problem getting a card or closing an account

Credit card or prepaid card: General-purpose prepaid card

Trouble getting, activating, or registering a card
Complaint: XX/XX/19 I have purchased a pre paid card from XXXX in XXXX Iowa. I put {$40.00} on the card at XXXX. I went to activate it and it wouldnt work so I call the helpline and tried it through a XXXX ( the employee ) she said she couldnt help me Im not eligible for the card. So I asked why and she couldnt tell me. So I asked for the Superviser and finally a male came on and told me I wasnt eligible Because I had a card previously With them and it had suspicious activities on it and that made me not eligible. So I asked how can they sell pre paid cards to the public if some are eligible and some arent. That doesnt make any sense. Thats what prepaid cards are for. The man told me there is nothing more they can do for me and I will receive a check in 7 to 10 business days..

Trouble using the card

Credit card or prepaid card: General-purpose prepaid card

Trouble using the card to spend money in a store or online
Complaint: I received a prepaid XXXX card from Netspend ( XXXX XXXX ) in the amount of {$150.00} as a gift. I tried to activate the card online. The activation required much more information than I've ever provided before to activate any kind of prepaid card. The statement was that such information was required by federal law. After giving my name, address, phone number, and social security number on their website, the activation was not complete. The message said I needed to send a copy of my driver 's license to them or to call. Of the two numbers provided, neither was valid. I contacted XXXX, who then connected me with XXXX XXXX/Netspend. The agent of the company asked for my personal information again, this time adding that she wanted my birthdate. When I objected to providing so much information, she offered me an option of receiving a refund of {$150.00} by paper check mailed to my home. I agreed to the refund. The reason for my complaint is that this company is requesting complete and unnecesary private information under false pretenses. I am concerned that they now have my personal information and could cause me harm by using that information fraudulently.

Problem getting a working replacement card
Complaint: On Saturday XX/XX/2019 I ordered a NetSpend Replacement Visa Check Card and the NetSpend Customer Service stated over the telephone that I would receive the replacement NetSpend Visa Check Card in 7 to 10 business days. I order the replacement NetSpend Visa Check Card because the one I have possession of is old and the magnetic strip on the card doesn't work properly.. Today is Monday XX/XX/2019 and I never received the NetSpend Visa Replacement Check Card in the mail I can only assume that it is stolen, held off, or was never mailed.

Problem with a purchase shown on your statement

Credit card or prepaid card: General-purpose credit card or charge card

Card was charged for something you did not purchase with the card
Complaint: Netspend sent me text messages and emails saying that I needed to call in. I called on XX/XX/XXXX and found out that Netspend stopped paying Unauthorized - Foreign transaction is : XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX. {$56.00} five times. Both the XXXX and XXXX claim that they do not recognize either my Soc. Security # or my now shut down card account #. Being a veteran and having lived in the XXXX XXXX XXXX area for XXXX years, I know a XXXX accent when I hear it. The exact same problem happened to my account in XX/XX/2019. But Netspend finally figured it out, and my phone calls to them are ( or were ) not being 'transferred ' overseas, XXXX , PI for example. You would have thought that Netspend would spend extra resources to find out that a ROGUE CUSTOMER SERVICE is ripping people off and shut it down, especially their overseas affiliates. So I called again on XX/XX/XXXX ( using the XXXX # ) and was then transferred to a supervisor who said she saw that the XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX was thought to be 'approved ' per what the initial customer svc rep had indicated. I said that he apparently wasn't listening because each time he asked I said NO, I do not know who this is. It should have been obvious to Netspend that these were suspicious transactions since they came one after the other AND the amount was the SAME, until XX/XX/XXXX that says the amount is {$54.00} --. As of XXXX XXXX CST, I emailed the President of Netspend giving them 4 hours to correct this or my next phone call will be to the FBI. Still waiting. The CFPB should also investigate XXXX XXXX XXXX because they have the legacy phone systems that a poor nation as the XXXX still rely on. Plusm all this nefarious activity came around the time of my Pension Payout from XXXX XXXX XXXX. Fortunately, I did miss that first deadline or my $ XXXX would have been toast, overseas, and without an ability to get at it. XXXX XXXX XXXX and I have a 'history ' - and needs to be looked into with a fine tooth comb in regards to XXXX and to my own personal history.
