Problem getting a card or closing an account

Credit card or prepaid card: General-purpose prepaid card

Trouble closing card
Complaint: On XX/XX/2017, I spent {$100.00} on a NetSpend Prepaid Debit Card. {$100.00} of that was to be credited onto the balance of the prepaid card, while {$2.00} of that was paid towards the activation fee of the card. After purchasing the card, I called NetSpend customer support to activate the card, so that I may use it. They presented me with too many hoops and hassles to use a simple prepaid card product, so I instead requested a refund for my purchase. The customer service representative obliged my refund request, and voided my card. The balance on my card was deleted and my card was rendered unusable. He told me that a check would arrive in the mail for {$100.00}, as my refund. About three months later, I called in again to ask about the status of my check, because I had still not received it. They told me they would send it again, but still did not. Now, it has been over 7 months since they were supposed to send me my refund check, and they still have not. When I call them, they purposely make the process as hard for me as possible. They ask me to send in all sorts of documents to them, to prove my identity and address, when all I want is a refund of my own money. But anyhow, I oblige them and send them the documents they request. Most recently, they requested proof of address in the form of a utility bill or bank statement. I sent them said document to the email address they provided. Then, I get a response in the email saying that this isn't the proper procedure, because I have no reference number. Yet, I was never ever given a reference number. Nobody at NetSpend is willing to resolve my issues. They only bounce my issue back and forth between departments, so that nobody is ever going to help me. I only want my refund check of a {$100.00}. They have already voided the prepaid card I purchased, so it is only right that they refund me the money. I have received nothing for my {$100.00} purchase.

Getting a credit card

Credit card or prepaid card: General-purpose credit card or charge card

Sent card you never applied for
Complaint: Netspend credit card company obtained information on my underage kid and issued her a credit card in her name solely based on the fact she purchased something online ... they have her address and full name on the card and all we have to do is activate it. Im extremely bothered by how this company was so nonchalant about the future repercussions this could have caused. I called the company and they were very limited by the amount of information they gave me ... now Im worried about identity theft for her in the future! WE NEVER GAVE THEM THE RIGHT TO SEND THIS CREDIT CARD TO HER IN HER NAME! Please investigate their practices its NOT RIGHT and are dangerous to our youth! And to be clear I have not provided her name on any of this paperwork nor do I intend to in order to protect her from further issues ... I believe if you call them you will find out very fast they send out randomly issued credit cards regardless of age!

Problem with a purchase or transfer

Credit card or prepaid card: General-purpose prepaid card

Charged for a purchase or transfer you did not make with the card
Complaint: On XX/XX/2018, I noticed that there were 9 transactions on my account when I woke up that morning I noticed these transactions were done between the hours of XXXX and like XXXX, while I was sleeping. I reported it immediately thru their automated system, I could not dispute the transactions until the opened at XXXX. The total amount that was taken out my account was XXXX, plus fees, this card was stolen by either my secretary or my sister, they were the only ones in the home at that time. Of course they are both denying it, so I have to dispute. These people have access to my paperwork in my home, which I do have a book that I have to write everything down in. I reported this immediately, now I have to wait 10 business days for them to tell me if they can issue a provisional credit to the account, the sad back is that I have a daily withdrawal limit of XXXX on my account, they can not tell me how or why this was able to take place. Reading their disclosure I have a zero liability thru XXXX, and I have a credit card, and when it means zero liability they are supposed t issue provisional credit during the investigation. I am so upset with the lack of customer service.

Problem with a purchase or transfer

Credit card or prepaid card: General-purpose prepaid card

Charged for a purchase or transfer you did not make with the card
Complaint: XX/XX/XXXX the following two charges were taken from my pre-paid Net Spend debit card. XX/XX/XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX CA {$19.00} - {$13.00} XX/XX/XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX CA {$19.00} {$6.00} I have never heard of this company nor had I purchased anything that would fit those amounts. I have had some computer issues so I did not see these until several days after they were posted. I was upset because the second charge resulted in an overdraft situation in my account. When I saw them I called the number listed with the charge. I spoke to the man who answered the phone. He did say the name of the company ( not XXXX ) so I asked him if XXXX was part of that company. He said that XXXX had gone out of business in XXXX and that he had no idea who was using that name to make charges. He said that he would give me the number of someone who might be able to help me. I called that number and spoke with a woman who, as soon as I mentioned XXXX and why I was calling, answered with her voice shaking. She repeated several times that she did n't know anything about what happened to XXXX or how I could contact them. I called the original number back and just got a recording, with no mention of XXXX. I then contacted the Net Spend Customer Service and spoke to one of the agents. I explained why I was calling and said I wanted to have these charges removed, as they were fraudulent. He took the information to start a claim. Having said that, I have been dealing with Net Spend for more than three years. I have had more than one claim started with their customer service department and, when I call to check the status a week or two later, there was no claim started. I have a list of incidents where I am totally amazed that they can stay in business. I have records of all of those and, if necessary, would be happy to send them to you. There is actually one that I will be filing another complaint to you for more than {$200.00}. On XX/XX/XXXX there was another payment of {$19.00} taken for XXXX and again on XX/XX/XXXX. This time I initiated a claim online on XX/XX/XXXX. Net Spend usually takes at least a month to investigate any claim and I have waited longer than that. To my surprise, I received a notification on XX/XX/XXXX that the investigation did not find any error in the transaction so the company would be keeping my money. I did ask if the fact that I never heard of the company and have nothing that I could have gotten from the company since I do not know what they sell was taken into consideration. I have not gotten an answer to that question. I also requested the paperwork of the investigation which I was informed today would take about ten days. That is four days longer than it took for them to decide I was not getting my money back. I am XXXX years old and on a very limited income so the amount close to {$80.00} will cause a burden to me. I have told Net Spend this more than once but it makes no difference. The vendor is always right ... not their client.

Problem getting a card or closing an account

Credit card or prepaid card: General-purpose prepaid card

Don't want a card provided by your employer or the government
Complaint: I received a prepaid XXXX from a company called XXXX on XXXX XXXX, 2018. It already had my babe embossed on it. I couldn't get through to a live representative because the voice machine wanted me to provide a card number or my social security. I gave the card number but it tried to get me to activate it using my social which I was not going to do. I was worried that someone has fraudulently applied for this card in my name. If not and the company just sent me a card like this without any request then I feel that is a security risk. What if I hadn't lived at the address or someone else managed to activate this card they sent me?

Credit card or prepaid card: General-purpose prepaid card

Confusing or misleading advertising about the card
Complaint: I received a XXXX 's XXXX XXXX that looks as though it goes through a financial institution called " XXXX '' ( this seems to be their website : XXXX ). The problem with this advertisement, I guess I would call it, is that it has a card number and my name pre-printed on the card. It also has my name, address, a routing number and account number listed on the front page of the letter. While this is prepaid, you have to read the small print behind the card to understand to really understand what this card is and that your credit was not checked for this card. I was very concerned at first because it had all of the account numbers, my name printed, and I thought they ran a credit report. At first, I thought it was a real credit card put in my name. Why should I have to take the time to shred this information and a card, when I never asked for this. It causes unnecessary stress for the consumer and could be misleading to an elderly person. This is poor advertising and it makes me think poorly of XXXX and this XXXX institution. If my name was not pre-printed on this, it didn't have an account and routing number before being activated, and it was very obvious in the letter that this was not run through my credit ; I would be okay.

Changes in terms from what was offered or advertised
Complaint: On XX/XX/17 I received an email saying something to the effect that I had " won '' a {$1000.00} gift card from XXXX. There were associated posts saying this was " for real ''. I started clicking to check it out. As I went along it seemed to start turning into an application for a credit card and, against my better judgement, I continued with the process. By the end, I had been congratulated for qualifying for a " Net Spend XXXX XXXX card ''. I was annoyed since I did NOT want this credit card. I decided to wait until I received the card to call the company. Well, I never even received the card! After 3 1/2 weeks I called XXXX Spend XXXX. The customer service person was not concerned about the fraudulent way I was lured into applying for the card or that I never received it. She seemed to want a quick resolution and simply offered to send me another card or close the account. I told her to close the account. I also said that I certainly hoped that opening and closing this account would not effect my credit score. She said it wouldn't but I'm not sure she knew what she was talking about.

Trouble getting information about the card
Complaint: On XXXX/XXXX/XXXX I tried to manage my netSpend acct on line but found it blocked. Upon contacting customer service I was advised that my acct had been closed on XXXX/XXXX/XXXX for " unacceptable acct usage pattern '' and that I was " no longer eligible for netSpend services. '' I waited 45 minutes for a supervisor who informed me that she could not tell the exact reason as my acct was closed by XXXX, but said they did not have the phone number for their parent company. On XXXX/XXXX/XXXX I called XXXX to inqure further about the reason for my acct closure. XXXX denied any responsibility for acct terminations which the rep assured me was at the sole discretion of netSpend. On XXXX/XXXX/XXXX I contacted netSpend and spoke to a supervisor again attempting to obtain an understanding of what transpired with my acct. This time I was told that such information was not available since my acct was " no longer accessible '' due to its closure. When I asked for the regulatory agency responsible for netSpend operations, I was transferred to the risk management voicemail line. I left a clear message with my information. As of XXXX/XXXX/XXXX, I have not received a call back. On XXXX/XXXX/XXXX I received a check from netSpend for {$44.00}, the balance from my acct at time of closure.

Trouble getting information about the card
Complaint: Hi, My son had received a {$100.00} gift card from his school XXXX in XX/XX/XXXX. This is a netSpend XXXX Debit card and was bought from XXXX grocery store. The card was activated at the time of purchase. In XX/XX/XXXX when we tried to use the card we were unable to ( which my son wanted to use for XXXX ). So, I decided to register at netSpend.com add the card to see what was happening. I can see that a monthly fee of {$5.00} was being deducted and the card shows balance. However, it also shows the card is expired. When I attempt to call the card issuer on the phone number listed on the back of card, it does not recognize the card and does not allow reaching customer service. I tried reaching the customer service on the website but that does not allow reaching the customer service without completing a security profile. The website does not allow me to setup a security profile without a valid card ( unexpired card ). It is frustrating that there is no way to reach this company other than writing to them via mail. By the time my mail reaches them they would have deducted another monthly fee. My son is greatly disappointed that he can not spend a reward he earned from his school. The card shows a balance that is depleting every month, yet it shows it is expired. Attached are the statement from XX/XX/XXXX and also the card activation history and expiration date. This is pure deceit of unsuspecting consumers. I hope this company is banned from issuing cards that expire, especially when there is balance. I am sure there are many out there like us.

I sent all paperwork from my college to them and was told to expect something in 6 business hours. I then asked to speak to a supervisor who ensured me the documentation I sent was good and I would receive my direct deposit by XXXX. I called back at XXXX and was given a different answer, that the direct deposit department was gone and attempted to call the college but it was closed so they would need to verify tomorrow.
