Complaint: I was part of the Equifax credit information hack. I find it unacceptable that I have to PAY to freeze my credit when I did n't consent to my information being stored by Equifax, XXXX, or XXXX in the first place. Congress should make credit freezes and unfreezes free federally. Credit reporting agencies already make money off of my information and I should not be required to pay them additional money to protect my information, especially when they are doing a POOR job in the first place. Complaint: After having received my annual credit report, I found that Equifax charged me with 3 times as many hard inquiries than all other credit reporting agencies for the purchase of an automobile in XXXX. Although I did not authorize the auto dealership to make multiple inquiries, I understand that when multiple inquiries are made for the purchase of an auto, mortgage or student loan to lenders within a short period of time, typically, these are treated as a single inquiry. All other credit reporting agencies treated this occurrence as a single Hard inquiry.

Complaint: Equifax, in the course of collecting personal information for use in credit reporting, was negligent in the storage of this information and as a result, my personal information, including but not limited to my name, address, and social security number were compromised. The net effect of their negligence is that for as long as the compromised information is a core part of the credit reporting system and financial system, I will be vulnerable to fraudulent activity and identity theft. Even with over a month passing since their discovery of this data leak, Equifax is unprepared to take any effective remedial actions. Their website is unable to process requests to freeze my credit. They also have not coordinated with other credit bureaus to allow me to freeze my credit without paying a fee for each freeze and unfreeze. Their phone system is ill equipped to handle the call volume as a result of their failure and they have effectively left me on my own with my personal information exposed. Equifax has offered limited credit monitoring services, but these would only notify me after someone has used this information ; it does nothing to deter the usage of this information.

Complaint: Due to recent data breaches at Equifax I froze all my credit accounts with the four major credit reporting companies. I did not want to do this. I did not agree to allow my PII to be stored on servers that do not meet industry standards in security. Yet, I still have to pay {$10.00} plus tax in my state to add a layer of protection to my data due to the negligence in the safe keeping of my personal data. I do not think this is fair and would like to be reimbursed for the freeze/thaw requests that are now being advised in order to protect my identity and credit that is being stored at a company that I have no consumer choice in selecting. I would like a refund in the amount of {$11.00} from XXXX and {$10.00} from XXXX. I would also like to have all future freeze/thaw fees waived since they are being recommended as essential data security protection by industry experts and CFPB in light of the latest data breach. Lastly, I would like to request that credit reporting companies handling sensitive consumer data follow industry standards regarding its encryption and protection and that the chosen practices are audited regularly for compliance.

Complaint: Equifax recently reported a data breach of full identifying credit and identity information of approximately 143 million U.S. customers due to their negligence in protecting this critical data of which their customers have no direct control or consent over. Their website attempts to identify if I " may have been impacted '' by the breach, but it appears it may be providing a random response based on the differing answers I received when using the website more than once with the same information. Based on the estimated number of customers impacted, including 8 million NY customers, it is highly likely most or all Americans with credit reports, including myself, have been impacted. Since much of the leaked information is virtually immutable ( such as SSN 's ), I will now have to contend with the possibility of my leaked identity being used for theft or other criminal purposes for the rest of my life, barring a major overhaul of SSN 's and the credit reporting system. Equifax has offered a year of credit monitoring through their own service, which will not itself prevent unauthorized activity related to my leaked information, nor will it protect against the repercussions of such an event. Additionally, the service will require payment to Equifax after the first year to maintain the service, while the potential for harm to my credit will be life-long. The leak itself, in addition to the original wording surrounding this monitoring service combined with recent reports casting doubt on the integrity of the security features used for this service make this an unacceptable remedy to the situation caused by Equifax. The best course of action I can take to protect myself is to make use of credit report freezes for all three credit reporting agencies ( Equifax, XXXX and XXXX ), in addition to utilizing fraud alerts and either manual monitoring of my credit report or subscribing to a monitoring service indefinitely. Aside from the resulting inconveniences and worry these introduce, there are fees associated with these measures that I am expected to pay for these services in order to maintain any protection and peace of mind for the period which I am affected ( which in this case, may be the rest of my life ).
