Student loan: Federal student loan servicing

Received bad information about your loan
Complaint: For the last 2 years I've been trying to get the correct amount to pay my loans based on an income sensitive repayment plan. Since XX/XX/XXXX when I was laid off from my job I've been trying to get the monthly payment. I applied for Unemployment deferment but Navient didn't finalize the deferment because they say my husband didn't co-sign on fsfa.gov. Even though he had done so in XX/XX/XXXX. Once I found out in XX/XX/XXXX that the loans weren't deferred, we applied again in XXXX & finally Navient got the information to defer. Interestingly, I have 2 emails from Navient in XXXX & XXXX stating that it's taking longer than usual because of volume to process the first deferment request. And then they said they didn't receive the co-signed information. I talked with someone via phone at the Dept of Ed & they had the online completed co-signature and I have an email with the information regarding this call on XX/XX/XXXX. A new paystub was entered with the new income amount. I was told that Navient had all that they needed. I received a letter amount a month & a half later with the payment amount of {$790.00} due per month. Of course I was floored as I've never paid more than {$270.00} per month for all three loans that I have. I applied again for the income sensitive repayment as I was told via mail that I no longer qualified for this type of repayment plan. I then followed up with a phone call to Navient 's customer service line to state that the payment amount must be wrong given that I was in an Unemployment deferment, income was half of what I'd been receiving before & that I kept being deemed ineligible for a repayment plan that I'd been eligible & deemed ineligible for previously. Navient kept saying that they would expedite a determination & get the payment amount. A couple of months later, I still didn't have a payment amount. I'd asked them to expedite this again & I'd still been in unemployment deferment because of the earlier issue even though I'd gotten employment again after being unemployed for 5 months. I asked them to do the recalculation of my new employment right after the Unemployment deferment took affect. By XXXX, I received a letter from Navient stating that my new payment was again {$790.00} which coincidentally was the same as I'd received about 6 months before. I had anticipated that it would be about double as our income had doubled, however, I didn't anticipate an amount of almost 3 times the previous amount I'd paid given that we only made $ XXXX more. Of course, I'd called Navient again & asked what was going on. By this time ( XX/XX/XXXX ) I'd been let go from the company I'd been employment for & applied again for Unemployment deferment in XX/XX/XXXX. Two weeks later I uploaded the Unemployment deferment form. My husband co-signed online & I uploaded the new income. I received a letter stating that that they'd denied the Unemployment deferment as they didn't receive information that my husband co-signed for the 2nd time. Then I got an email from the Dept of Ed stating on XX/XX/XXXX that my husband had co-signed successfully. I got a letter a couple weeks later from Navient stating that my husband had applied but that I hadn't. Not sure why I got this as I'd applied before my husband. I got another letter from Navient stating that the new amount was again {$790.00} due on XX/XX/XXXX. I have communicated with Navient once a month for the last 2 years to get this straightened out & I still can't get resolution.

Trouble with how payments are being handled
Complaint: I have been trying to deal with Navient for the past 2 years, and Sallie Mae ( when it used to own my loans ). I was initially told by Navient that my loans would qualify for loan forgiveness if i met the 120 payments starting 2007. its been over at least a year since i have fulfilled this requirement, and they are not telling me the following : initially, i was told that because of the kind of loan repayment, that i did not qualify for the loan forgiveness, now i'm being told that the kind of consolidated loan that i have does not qualify because it is not a Direct Loan, which was the kind of loan that i initially had before i consolidated it per their advise. Navient is creating different barriers to avoid the loan forgiveness ... and relabeling a loan so that the 'kind ' of loan is not satisfied even though all other criteria is met. this is ridiculous.

Trouble with how payments are being handled
Complaint: I inquired with Navient, my current loan service provider, in XXXX of XXXX about Public Service Forgiveness. At that time I believed I was under student loan forgiveness, under President Obama 's order. I was informed that I was not. I was put on the path by NAVIENT to consolidate my student loans under a new program that qualifies for public service loan forgiveness. I did everything I was asked to do and provided all information I was asked to provide in order to be considered for student loan forgiveness as a public servant. I have been a public servant since XXXX, long before this order was issued by the President. Two years later ( XX/XX/XXXX XXXX I discovered that I was not under the appropriate " Income Based '' loan and that I was not under " XXXX '' and I had not made a single qualifying payment out of the 120 payments they told me I would have to make. I made at least 20 payments as of this date - in fact I make a payment every two weeks on a Friday without fail. I have spent approximately 15 hours in phone conversations with either NAVIENT, XXXX or FAFSA concerning this situation. I believe I have been mislead along the way and have been misinformed as to the results of my efforts and payments. I have paid over {$7300.00} in the last two years towards student loans, I still owe {$34000.00} of which I pay {$130.00} every two weeks, wherein {$88.00} goes to interest and {$50.00} goes to principal.

Trouble with how payments are being handled
Complaint: I, like millions of other students are impacted negatively by Navient 's reckless and predatory policies. I have always paid my loans on time since I began repaying in XX/XX/2015. Now they are sending me emails stating that I can re-up for the income based repayment plan, but when I call them they state that they send that out to everyone and that I have " used up '' my time. I do not make enough money to pay the amount they are asking for, I hold 3 jobs and am taking on more side jobs just to pay rent, and eat. I explain my situation to them, and all they tell me is " Well we suggest you pay your loans because otherwise we will have to get collections on you. '' They have no feeling or idea how this impacts my life. They have a huge lack of repayment options, and when I tell them I make no more than I did 6 months ago, they say I have no options other than forbearance, which to me is NOT an option. Increasing my already HIGH and ridiculous interest rates is something I am not willing to do. Is this the future I face? Holding debt until my XXXX 's or beyond? I will not leave my debt to my spouse, I refuse to marry or have children as this will have a huge impact on their lives if I die with debt. The interest rates escalate exponentially every 6 months, and there is no end in sight to how high they may go. I am only bringing in est. {$2500.00} after taxes from my main job, and am required to pay almost {$900.00} to Navient, plus an additional {$170.00} for XXXX. My rent is {$1300.00} plus utilities, plus food. I am barely putting money away to save. I tell them what I spend my money on, and they tell me that I am negative balance, and how can that be? They don't believe my struggle, they think I am lying about how much I am suffering financially. " How can you pay my loans? '' I tell them that I hold other positions and they are variable as they are freelance but I do whatever I can do pay my loans, proofread, graphic design, sell clothes, odd jobs for family or friends. After I explain this to them, they just ask for my mother 's bank information to run her numbers. Well they have already RUINED her credit based on egregious errors they have made in the past when dealing with my sister 's student loans. Even after having her contact them with her info, apparently I have no other options for repayment other than just pay in full or forbearance, which again is not an option and just a ploy for them to get you off the phone. What can be done? This is out of control and they need to be put in check. Their employees do not help anyone, and I am so amazed that this evil company can have employees that can sleep at night knowing that they are ruining lives, making people homeless, and putting people in debt until retirement age and beyond. I know because of Navient I will never reach my full potential and obtain my XXXX because even thinking about taking on more loans, or even putting those loans in forbearance while I continue my education adds great stress to my life and makes me angry and sad to think about it. Private loans seem to have NO regulation, and I do not understand why. Navient keeps people down, keeps people in debt, while they rake in the money, and hire people with no souls who clearly do not care about their fellow people or making American truly successful and great.

Getting a loan

Student loan: Private student loan

Fraudulent loan
Complaint: I had a friend ask me to co-sign a loan for her. I agreed to do so and provided my information to her to start the process ; this was in XX/XX/2005. The amount she asked me to co sign for her was {$5000.00}. I did not find out until later, that the my friend had signed my name ( as suggested by the school she was attending ) as the primary borrower on the promissory note. I never signed the promissory note as a primary borrower or co signer. I also never received nor cashed the check. Im unsure if the check even had my name listed as a payee or hers ; I have never seen it. I was out of the country at the time when the check was disbursed. My friend at the time, had a third party ( her boyfriend ) deposit/cash the check in his account. I never saw the check and a copy of the check was never provided to me even upon request. I was not made aware of what my friend had done until I began receiving past due notices and after requesting a copy of the promissory note. I also notified the loan services who was Sallie Mae at the time. They told me I had no recourse and I had to pay. This back and forth with them and her went on for years ultimately with me refusing to pay another dime toward the loan. Eventually they ( Sallie Mae, now Navient ) provided me with a fraud packet which I completed and returned to them. They stated our signatures were similar enough and I provided her with the information so I was responsible even though I never signed any documents. They also would not reopen the fraud case until I provided them with a letter from my friend admitting the fraud. During the course of their investigation they never once spoke to her ( this was relayed to me by the investigator ). Also, Navient stated they would report to the credit bureaus completed investigation of FCRA dispute-consumer disagrees. They have only reported the loan as delinquent. I receive multiple calls a day all week long, threatening default regarding the loan, requesting payment, to verify my payment information, etc.

Trouble with how payments are being handled
Complaint: Beginning XXXX I have dealt with my current payment situation on almost a monthly basis. I have been paying on my student loans for over 10 years. Throughout that time on usually an annual basis, my information mysteriously goes missing and after a period of time just long enough to get my payment behind Navient miraculously is able to track me down. I have been told that my address was no longer valid even though I owned the home and had lived there for multiple years. I was told that I requested to convert to online billing ( which I did not ). The online billing " request '' event has happened multiple times. It is always just long enough for me to have to pay late fees and catch things up. I have several bills and I work a long hours and I do not always notice if I have received a particular bill that month but I pay everything that I receive. I applied for income driven payments since my payment was more than my mortgage payment. Each year there would be a delay and more costs so I signed up for a 3rd party company to navigate the paperwork for me. I am a full time instructor and have been since XXXX so I enrolled in 10 loan forgiveness. Due to inability of Navient to bill me properly I have now lost 3 years of consistent payments and have to begin at day 1. It all seems like a scam and I feel like I am being punished for wanting an education.

Problem with customer service
Complaint: When I was in school my dad helped me apply for a loan. His friend was able to be my co-signer at the time. Once I graduated, my consigner began to harass me and bully me into releasing him from my loan. I tried to reach out to the company to make it happen but they said that I would have to wait 12 months before applying. Last month my co-signer sent me an email requiring me to remove him as my co-signer by XXXX because he is moving to XXXX and will not contact me. I told him that I have to wait 12 months and he became very angry with me and my family. I have been BEGGING the company to remove him or at least replace him with my dad ( who has offered to do so ) because of the constant harassment I am facing. I don't understand. I have been with this company for years and have always paid on time or told them if I loss my job and need to lower payment. I have a well-paying job and have autopay. Why can't they not ( just this once ) refrain from using their process and help me in a time of need and abuse. I am literally being mentally and emotionally abused by this person and need to remove him before something happens. I am begging my company to just do the right thing since he is moving to another country and won't even help me if something went wrong. Why won't they help me. That is why I have to each out to consumer finance for HELP!

Problem lowering your monthly payments
Complaint: I've attempted to request lower monthly payment amounts without success. When I fist got the loan I only owed about 15K now I owe more than 30K. How is that acceptable? My balance owed has doubled in only 12 years from the time I finished school. Late fees keep adding up. My credit score keeps falling due to higher debt ratio and the cost of living is rising every year. How is someone with an XXXX XXXX supposed to live if they are getting hit late fees and high interest rates that double the date every year? When I first applied for this loan full disclosure of late fees and interest rates where not provided. I was also not advised to apply for fasfa or any other scholarship to help pay for my education without having to turn into loan debt. I'm pretty i was also cheated in the way my payments in the past where applied but the Navient website does not provide that data of course.

Trouble with how payments are being handled
Complaint: I tried to make a payment with Navient on XX/XX/19 online. When I went to the website, there was a posting that the site would be down for the weekend for system updates. I called the Customer Service number and received an automated message stating all systems were down for maintenance, including the automated system ; therefore they Customer Service Dept was closed. The call then promptly disconnected. I tried to reach Navient throughout the day on XXXX and was only able to get through the website after XXXX on XXXX. I then submitted my payment. Since my loan accrues daily interest, I called the Customer Service number on XX/XX/XXXX to have my payment pre-dated. I was told that was not possible. I then asked for a credit to be applied to my account for the extra interest I would be charged since their systems were down and I was unable to make the payment when I had intended. I was also told that was not possible after speaking with a manager. During the weekend of XX/XX/19, Navient made thousands, if not millions of dollars, in daily interest charges by not accepting payments from customers during this time.
