Dealing with your lender or servicer

Student loan: Federal student loan servicing

Received bad information about your loan
Complaint: In 2009 I graduated with my XXXX XXXX in XXXX XXXX putting me at around {$42000.00} in student loan debt. I contacted my student loan servicer, Navient then Sallie Mae, via telephone regarding loan repayment plan and loan forgiveness as I qualify based on my employment. I asked specifically what I needed to do to initiate the 10 years of payments to qualify for loan forgiveness. The loan servicer stated that all I needed to do was start making payments and show proof of qualifying employment. The servicer reported that at ten years of active payments I just had to apply for loan forgiveness. I was informed the sliding scale payment option would be acceptable ( payments start out low then slowly increase as time goes by ). At no time did they state I needed to apply for the income driven repayment plan and had to switch my loan to a Direct Loan in order for the payments to qualify. All the while, anytime I changed jobs I submitted qualifying loan forgiveness employment proof to my loan servicer specifically showing my intentions to request loan forgiveness. Seven years later I contacted my loan servicer to submit updated proof of qualifying employment as I changed jobs, all the while actively making payments towards my loan in accordance to what my loan servicer had instructed. At that time I checked with Navient on what the process looked like for when I actually needed to apply for loan forgiveness. That was the first time I received information from my loan servicer that I had no qualifying payments, needed to switch to an income driven repayment plan, and switch my current federal loan to a Federal Direct Loan before I could start making qualifying payments. Seven years of responsible consistent payments were not counted towards loan forgiveness based on the misinformation provided to me by my loan servicer even though the amount I was paying monthly was similar to what loan forgiveness qualifying payments would have looked like. I attempted to reconcile this issue with Navient, as the company was aware of my intentions for loan forgiveness based on my initial request as well as ongoing submissions of proof of qualifying employment for loan forgiveness. Navient stated there is nothing can do and refused to make things right.

Dealing with your lender or servicer

Student loan: Federal student loan servicing

Received bad information about your loan
Complaint: My loans are being serviced by Navient and Navient 's website doesn't provide me with enough information about my account to properly manage it. On their website, there is NO option to download monthly account statements showing previous balance, current balance or how much interest is being charged vis-a-vis how much of my payment they're applying to the interest. The website shows me how much of my payment is applied to interest, but without knowing how much interest is being charged, I have no idea if I'm paying all the interest every month or if some of it is being capitalized. There is also no option to discontinue electronic account management and return to snail-mail, paper statements. I'm on an " interest only '' repayment plan, but I've been consistently paying $ XXXX- {$50.00} more than the minimum payment for almost 3 years, but my balance never seems to go down. Don't I have the right to see and download full monthly account statements showing previous balance, current balance and interest charged? Navient won't give me this information. It seems very shady to me and I have to wonder what they don't want me to know. I can't attach any documents because there's no monthly statements.

Incorrect information on your report

Credit reporting, credit repair services, or other personal consumer reports: Credit reporting

Account status incorrect
Complaint: Beginning in XX/XX/2017 I've disputed the student loans reported on my credit profiles by Navient, I wrote them numerous letters asking them to show the original promissory note I supposedly signed. They sent me a computer printout with no signature, only saying these loans were e-filed. I wrote again disputing the validity of the loans and they wrote my back stating I could dispute but this is my loan. I continued to dispute with the same dispute as before and that is to prove these are my loans in which are duplicated on my credit reports to appear as more than one they are different on the three reports.

Struggling to repay your loan

Student loan: Private student loan

Problem lowering your monthly payments
Complaint: Navient continually raises my interest rate. Every year, it goes up at LEAST .5 %, and it is currently at 10.75 % ; up .75 % this year alone. I have tried contacting them to lower my interest rate ( I have a near perfect repayment history with them ) but they always tell me there is nothing they can do. I can not afford to pay more per month to pay this loan down, so it just sits there collecting an absurd amount of interest. I feel they are taking advantage of me and I feel powerless to stop it.

Dealing with your lender or servicer

Student loan: Federal student loan servicing

Received bad information about your loan
Complaint: From XXXX through XXXX I borrowed a total of {$49000.00} through Sallie Mae using a Parent Plus Loan to put my son through college. Early on, Navient became the service provider of this loan. Though I have had a few late payments, I have never defaulted. I had to take advantage of deferment a couple times and have consistently had to reduce my payments though income based programs because I couldn't afford the large payments. For many years I have been on the " Income Sensitive '' program, which apparently does NOT qualify for forgiveness after 20 or 25 years and I had no idea this was not the case until I called them. The only thing that made me feel okay about having this outstanding loan was that it would be eventually forgiven. And after 20 years I would have paid all the money back, if not more, that I borrowed, so it's not like they wouldn't get their money. I was thinking I had about 10 more years to go, which isn't great, but something I could live with. I feel Navient was negligent in not informing me that there were other income based programs that would have put me in the qualification for forgiveness after many years of payment. And nowhere on their website was this spelled out. Just look at these numbers : I borrowed a total of {$49000.00}. I have paid XXXX As of this writing I owe {$52000.00} I have no words. This is absolutely horrific.

Dealing with your lender or servicer

Student loan: Federal student loan servicing

Trouble with how payments are being handled
Complaint: Hello, In 2010 I XXXX from college and began repaying my student loans. I had federal loans which were consolidated into one subsidized and one unsubsidized. Some payments went into deferment while I was getting my XXXX XXXX XXXX. About 2 years ago, after Navient had become the servicer of these loans, when the loans came out of deferment and I began making payments for all I applied and received approval for an income based repayment plan which also included a 10 year debt forgiveness component because I am working for a XXXX XXXX. I setup monthly automatic payments to be taken out of my checking account. These payments came put monthly without any problem for a good amount of time, I would estimate a year or more. Strangely, without any notice from Navient, and with no indication that it had do to with any issue from my bank, these automatic payments which were setup through navient simply STOPPED. I did not know they had stopped, I did not receive any word that my payments were not being collected, not even any warnings. They have simply stopped collected payments from me. While on my end, in the short term this seemed like a good thing because no one was asking me to pay, in the big picture this hurts me because I believe that it sets back the 10 year timeline of debt forgiveness that by now I should be 2 or 3 years into, through no fault of my own, and through Navients failure to even tell me that I was not paying them. In the business of my schedule as a XXXX and a father, I have only tried once to find out why the auto payments stopped and to reinstate these payments, but I was not able to get a solution. I am going to make another attempt. But I can't help but wondering if this is related to the larger issues I am seeing in which Navient has received serious allegations for innapropriately handling their business. Is it worth looking more into for this situation, should I pursue further action? Or is my situation not one that would be eligible for correcting? Thank you for your time!
