Dealing with your lender or servicer

Student loan: Federal student loan servicing

Received bad information about your loan
Complaint: Starting sometime end of XXXX/beginning of XXXX this year, I have had multiple unproductive communications with Great Lakes Loan Servicer when I was trying to get an Income-based repayment. First, they incorrectly told me that I used the wrong application so I resubmitted, then I was told to go back to the old way I did it, and this time they said it was wrong again ( we kept going back and forth and after about 5 different applications they said it was correct ). Then came the next wave of problems : this time the estimates I am given when I submitted my application are different from what I got after it was processed and no one has been able to give a reasonable explanation. In any one day I call and speak to 3 different agents and I can get 3 different answers. I have spoken to regular agents and supervisors. The next problem came when I tried to consolidate loans I have with my last school that had just entered repayment ( these are also federal loans ). The process has taken more than 2 months and I am getting different answers. In the email I received it says that the loans were not processed because I did not fill out the IBR form ( which of course they already have ), and on the phone I was told that they did not get paid because they were in repayment ( but again, these loans were already in repayment ). It seems to me these people do not have any idea what they are doing and sadly they are managing a large sum of money for a lot former students. Something needs to be done ( may be an audit, or shut them down altogether ).

Dealing with your lender or servicer

Student loan: Federal student loan servicing

Trouble with how payments are being handled
Complaint: I'm writing on behalf of my wife, as I've been helping her pay back her student loans and believe additional/one-time payments are being misapplied by the loan servicer, both for Federal and Private Loans. I believe it is similar to the issues previously dealt with regarding XXXX XXXX where it was making its own elections on how to apply payments, allocations, etc, and not informing borrowers they should decide payment allocation. First and foremost, Great Lakes opted to provide three different loan " groupings '' of the loans, one a " group '' of federal loans, the other two, I believe were groupings of private loans. These " groups '' are indiscriminate of which school the loans were related to, or to interest rate. When I initially began helping her pay her loans, she had auto-pay set up where she would pay the monthly minimum ( which I don't believe even covered the interest, but that's not the subject of this complaint ), and I would make an additional monthly payment on her behalf trying to attack higher interest loans. I AM aware that the first payment of the month on a loan is attributed first towards interest, and then if the interest is satisfied, towards any additional principal. I do not dispute this. BUT, because of Great Lakes random " grouping, '' it treats each " group '' of loans as a single loan, EVEN IF I DESIGNATE A PAYMENT TO GO TOWARDS ONE INDIVIDUAL LOAN. This results in misapplication of my specified payment, attributing the overpayment ( or additional payment, extra principal, however you want to title it ) as being squandered towards the interest of loans with lower interest rates. Additionally, as part of this complaint, in adding to the confusion, Great Lakes does not permit a borrower make a payment toward one loan, but allows a payment be made only to a group, with assigned percentages, requiring the buyer to either make individual payments assigned 100 % to the individual loan within the group, or requiring multiple percentages be calculated, obfuscating the system. An example : On XX/XX/2019, I made an additional payment of {$9800.00} attempting to pay off one of the loans with the highest interest. This amount was slightly more than the balance to make sure over the 2-3 days it took to process, it covered additional interest. I logged into the system, selected the loan " group, '' designated the payment should be applied with an " allotment '' of 100 % to sub-loan " XXXX, '' and despite the extra payment to cover the interest, the remaining balance on the loan was still $ XXXX. Why? I logged in and looked at the payment, and instead of breaking it down as specified, 100 % to loan " XXXX, '' it took the payment and applied it to all sub-loans in the group as follows : XXXX {$16.00} to interest XXXX {$13.00} to interest XXXX {$7800.00} to principal, XXXX to interest XXXX XXXX to interest XXXX XXXX to interest XXXX XXXX to interest XXXX XXXX to interest XXXX XXXX to interest XXXX XXXX to interest XXXX XXXX to interest The same happened with multiple other payments. I contacted Great Lakes to discuss this with them. They cited the MPNs and " Federal Law '' indicating that the first payment of a month goes towards interest for a loan. Again, I do not disagree that when a payment is made, it first goes towards interest on that loan, but when I log in and specify a payment specifically to one sub-loan, and Great Lakes treats the payment as a payment towards a group of loans, that is wholly improper. Great Lakes does not get to arbitrarily " group '' loans to syphon additional payments away from the higher interest loans and distribute it to their discretion. Doing so, and disregarding a borrower 's intention to pay toward an individual loan as opposed to a group of loans costs borrowers hundreds and thousands of dollars by not allowing them to fully attack their higher interest loans first. I had multiple follow ups with Great Lakes and they indicated they " could '' delineate the loans, but that would complicate my credit report. That is an unacceptable response, and an unacceptable reason to ignore the designations of the borrower paying back loans in good faith.

Account information incorrect
Complaint: Good morning, I am disputing the 90 day past due noticed with Great Lakes the loan provider for my student loans. I am current with my loans and was going through the Income Driven Repayment Plan process due to a change in income and the amount of the payments had increased to approximately {$660.00}, between one year of IDR to this new year. I would like to have the 90 day past due amount corrected on XXXX, XXXX, and XXXX consumer reports. Great Lakes stated that they have sent the update to the three companies, although at this time I do not see any change. I am on the Income Driven Repayment payment option and my next payment is due in XXXX. I look forward to correcting the 90 day past due amount and moving forward with the adjustment on my credit report. Thank you very much for your time and assistance. This is truly important to me and my family as we build toward our future.

Student loan: Federal student loan servicing

Don't agree with the fees charged
Complaint: On XX/XX/2019, I made the decision to log on to my student loan to pay my loan off of just {$50.00}. I was unaware at the time that maybe I did something wrong, but the payment of {$50.00} said it would process through in the next 2-3 business days. Yesterday afternoon, I tried to make a purchase on XXXX, but my purchase was denied, which that has never happened until yesterday. I look into my bank account and saw that the loan agency, Great Lakes, has charged me with $ XXXX.I do not even have half close to that amount in personal checkings account. I talk with several different Great Lakes reps about my issue and they informed me that they could not do anything regarding my payment mishap. They told me to call my bank and see if they could reverse the payment on my account. I was able to talk with a few bankers at the bank and they told me to contact the loan agency, but I told the bankers that my loan agency referred me to them to speak with it was nothing they could do to reverse the payment. I was told by a banker that they would fix the issue, but my account is still resting at a - {$39000.00}. I have no way to pay for anything, use my card to make any purchases. I am lost and devastated at this point, because now I am penniless because of the mishap that occurred on XXXX. I thought my loan agency would take agency, but they failed to do so, now I am worried that I won't be able to pay any other bills I owe, which is not good for me. I need help with this issue immediately. Please help me.
