Unable to open an account
Complaint: Tried to open a CD acc ount at Discover Bank. Just want to transfer money from a Discover B ank Savings a cct. Spent time on line filling out application. At the end of the application process, was notified to call a service representative to fin alize the opening of the account. Called the representative and was on the phone for 15+ minutes with 10 minutes hold while they investigagted. Meanwhile I received an email stating the application was not accepted. I brought this to the attention of the respresentive who put me on hold for another 4 minutes and then came back and said I have to start the process all over again. When I ask ed why, there was no reason. I fillled out all the paperwork to the best of my ability. It was a mere transfer of funding from an internal account. I called to complain and find out why. No one could answer. My time is valuable, too.

Trouble with how payments are being handled
Complaint: On XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX , notification ( via email on the loan servicing site ) was received that a private student loan serviced by Discover would be increasing in interest rate from 3.25 % to 3.5 %. When logging in on XXXX / XXXX / XXXX to make the required monthly minimum payment of {$230.00}, the minimum payment shown was instead {$370.00}. Called Discover, they explained that the 63 % increase in minimum payment on a loan with a {$3600.00} balance was due to the increase in interest rate. When challenged, I was put on hold and they came back to state the following : we noticed you were making extra payments on the loan, so we changed the terms of the loan. You now only hav e 10 m ore monthly payments to make. This increased your required monthly payment to XXXX XXXX /month. Is it legal to change the terms of a loan without notification and agreement from the customer? Making extra payments does not imply consent to decrease the loan term. It also does not imply that I will always have extra money to put toward the loan each month and am agreeable to these new terms. Telling a customer the increase is due to a 0.25 % increase in interest rate on a loan with a {$3600.00} balance and 8 years left in the term is not truthful or logical. When the interest rate went from 3 % to 3.25 % in XXXX XXXX XXXX , and the balance on that loan was {$9600.00}, the monthly payment increased by {$1.00}.

I have talked to the credit card company and send them copies of my Passport and Airline tickets showing that I was not in the USA. A nd I have no idea who used my credit card and how? Problem lowering your monthly payments
Complaint: I graduated with a XXXX XXXX XXXX in XXXX XXXX . Once my Discover undergraduate loa n went into repayment I quickly fell behind due to the amount of the payment and others I must make on a monthly basis. My mother is the cosigner on this loan, but she is XXXX and on a limited, fixed income. She has been harassed and threatened by calls from Discover dem anding payments of {$1000.00} to {$3000.00} on the spot or her " credit would be ruined for the rest of her life. '' In XXXX , we were told if we made three consecutive payments of at least {$900.00} they would work with me to lower my monthly payments. When I called after having completed these payme nts ( made with the help of my mother despite neither of us being able to afford it ) I was told they never promised such a thing. I once again fell behind and began to receive calls multiple times a day while I was working, often from local area codes to encourage me to answer. Each time the amount they asked for included what was currently due, but also what was due for the next payment even if it was a month away. In early XXXX , my mother used an open end loan and low interest rate credit card in her name to help me catch up. Discover received {$3400.00} in XXXX XXXX . I called to discuss the options for lowering the monthly payment and was told there were none. The conversation with the " repayment assistance department '' included phrases such as the following after I described my financial situation such as how much I make and amounts/numbers of other financial obligations : " in order for the loan amount to be paid off in 15 years, a monthly payment of {$900.00} is required. You do n't think you 'll ever make enough to pay that? That 's what your loan balance requires. We only offer temporary solutions. But afte r the 3-6 months the payment will be even higher. '' I offered a monthly payment of {$500.00} which is still more than I can comfortably afford, but the woman would not hear it. I am doing every thing in my power to avoid going into default and further ruining my credit, but Discover has told me a number of falsehoods and offered empty promises.

Complaint: On Monday, XXXX XXXX , XXXX , I was contacted by Discover Student Loans a bout a loan that had originally be taken out with XXXX in XXXX . The loan was sold t o Discover a few years back. The customer service who contacted me identified that she was calling with the co-signer, XXXX XXXX , on the other line and wished to patch him in. I did not want to speak with her because I was very surprised by the phone call. I said that it was not a good time, she repeated that the co-signer, XXXX XXXX , was on the other line. I hung up at this point. XXXX XXXX is not the co-signer for this loan, this loan does not have a co-signer. I was older than XXXX XXXX XXXX and did not require a co-signer for this student loan. XXXX XXXX ' name is not on the XXXX for this loan. Discover has my home address, my cell phone number and my email address, they need not contact a third party to try and contact me. The representative also misidentified XXXX XXXX as a co-signer. This is deceptive, the representative lied to me and to XXXX XXXX who is aged and was rightfully very upset and confused by the phone call.

Complaint: I received my monthly statement from discover for XXXX XXXX the to XXXX XXXX XXXX . It had an additional fee charged as minimum interest charge fee. I called to ask Discover what the charge is about and I was told by XXXX ( EMPLOYEE ID # XXXX ) that it was for my XXXX purchase on XXXX XXXX . I argued that a purchase in the current statement should not be charged interest until the statement bill is due. I was told that since I did a balance transfer in XXXX XXXX , all purchases after the balance transfer will be charged interest immediately. I reported that I wasnt told about this and this sounds pretty deceptive. She told me it was in the fine print of the balance transfers. It just seems that this is another way of credit card companies to make money by not disclosing the terms and charging fees at very high interest rates.

Complaint: On XXXX XXXX , 2017, I completed a balance transfer using a promotional check sent to me via mail by Discover. I receive them all the time but never took advantage of one until now. I transferred my balance and made my first payment. After realizing that the payment was higher than it should have been I contacte d Discover. O n XXXX XXXX , 2017 , I spoke with XXXX in the Ohio location. After placing me on hold for several minutes she found that the reason I was charged additional was because the check processed was allegedly for a regu lar cash advance only a nd not the promotional offer. She said that they place two types of checks in the envelope-both cash advance and bala nce transfer. I explained to her that this is misleading and confusing to a consumer for them to place both types of offers into the checks. I am sure that several others have made the alleged mistake that I have made before if they were not careful. I asked XXXX what could be done to resolve and she said that there is nothing that can be done. After almost 8 years with this company, I will be transferring my balance to a legitimate, ethical company ( i.e. my personal bank or XXXX XXXX ) and closing out this car d. Discover 's practices a re deceptive and I feel so disgusted that they would take advantage of me in this way.

Complaint: I am writing to your agency in hopes you can help me with some charges on my Discover car d previously disputed with you guys. I would like to know the status of the disputes. I am Amish and I do not owe a computer and I am not computer literate. Communication is kind of diffic ult sometimes. So I asked my friend to help me with this. I did a complaint with CFPB previously but I lost track on what happened with my disputes. I was naive and let some companies take advantage of me and charged me for services and they did disappeared after and they were not capable of fulfill with their end of the deal. I would like to know if the charges that I disput ed with Discover were ever investigated and if they did what were the results. If they were disputed as claim and defenses.
