Student loan: Federal student loan servicing

Received bad information about your loan
Complaint: I learned a few weeks ago some time after my Navient school loans had been transferred to XXXX that Navient reported that in XXXX, XXXX and XX/XX/XXXX that I contacted them and set up payment arrangements which is false. In XXXX, XXXX I was still in school and at that time I was not seeking to make payment arrangements just looking to finish school and I had also had been contacted by the Department of Education regarding the possibility of loan forgiveness due to misleading information from my school. Since XXXX, all of my school loans have been in forbearance due to the loan forgiveness investigation and I have only been waiting to hear how this will end. I have not attempted to set up any payment arrangements prior to after my loans were placed in deferment, forbearance, or under the investigation.

Problem when making payments

Credit card or prepaid card: General-purpose credit card or charge card

You never received your bill or did not know a payment was due
Complaint: I was shocked when I reviewed my credit report and found 90 days late payment on the dates XX/XX/2017 to XX/XX/2017. I am not sure how this happened, I believe that I had made my payments to you when I received my statements. My only thought is that my monthly statement did not get to me.

Student loan: Private student loan

Don't agree with the fees charged
Complaint: I have been paying my loan since XXXX in the original amount of {$20000.00}. Most of the money I pay goes to the high interest rates which are non-negotiable ( or so it seems that way ). The loan amount was brought down in XXXX of XXXX for {$10000.00} and in XX/XX/XXXX they threw in the capitalized interest of {$1100.00} which brought the total amount to {$11000.00}. The loan was only reduced because I had to dropout of school since I couldn't afford it. Sallie Mae sold the loan to Navient on XX/XX/XXXX for {$9500.00} and I've gotten it down to {$5600.00} since then. What I have paid in the lifetime of this loan so far is {$16000.00} ( Not the exact amount ) which comes out to the lender gaining about {$5000.00} on interest alone. The total amount of what I have paid so far is worth more than what the total original amount was that I was being charged and even the amount when it was sold to Navient. I have tried several attempts every year to call Navient and get a lower interest rate so I could actually make a dent in the loan amount but the answer I always get is that they can't do anything for me because it's a private loan. The only thing they can do is put me into default which will allow me to financially recover for a bit but the interest would continue to accumulate. I've paid more than necessary every single month yet the interest keeps going up and no matter how much I beg to have them work with me, it doesn't change a thing. I went to school when I was XXXX, I'm XXXX now with a family and have debt that is much more important to manage than this private loan yet I can't seem to get anyone at Navient to help me out. The lenders are the same with their unwillingness to work with people even if we're trying to do the right thing and repay them. I've gone from 10 % to 12 % interest in the last year alone and I am starting to pay {$300.00} a month yet I see only a small difference in the principal balance. It's disappointing that people who are trying to get an education in order to have better lives can't seem to do so without carrying the weight with them the rest of their lives.

Trouble with how payments are being handled
Complaint: On XX/XX/XXXX I contacted Navient regarding my 3 private student loans held with their company. My loan has been on interest rate reduction program for the past year and a half. the current reductions rate is 6 % and I pay a payment of {$160.00} every XXXX of the month via payments that are set up by their interest rate reduction program. The payments are split between interest and principal with interest being first. Due to the fixed interest rate each month the amount paid towards interest should decrease and the principal amount should increase. Unfortunately that has not been the case the amounts I pay towards interest and principal vary by large amounts each month. The servicing team could not provide explanation for that. Simply stating they don't have access. Also I have a line on both XX/XX/XXXX and XX/XX/XXXX for a loan sale which added additional interest to my loans and they could not provide answer to that. Another item on XX/XX/XXXX was added on for capitalized interest which should not of occurred. They stated that happens from time to time when full interest isn't paid but each month the full amount of interest accrued should be paid before principal. I was not in forbearance or deferment where I would not of paid interest in full for XXXX. Each time when I try to get clarification from their agents no one has an answer and keeps trying to pass the responsibility to someone else. It is super frustrating dealing with such an incompetent company.

Student loan: Federal student loan servicing

Received bad information about your loan
Complaint: My loans with Navient increase periodically, and I am making payments timely and in amounts greater than the minimum payment. I have spoken with them and they claim that this is from compounded interest. I explained that there should not be any compounded interest on these loans as I have not missed any payments. Originally the dates they said that they compounded my interest were dates I was attending college full time. I told them that and asked if I sent them proof, could they reverse it. They told me no. I GAVE UP! Then I got my most recent bill and it appears that my balance has gone up slightly again. I have not missed a payment and again I am paying amounts greater than my minimum payments each month. How is this legal? At this rate I will never get these paid off! XXXX XXXX

Student loan: Federal student loan servicing

Received bad information about your loan
Complaint: On XX/XX/2017, I signed an enrollment agreement ( the " Agreement '' ) with XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX " XXXX '' ). The total cost of the program was {$9900.00}. The cost was financed through federal student loans ( one for {$2400.00} and another for {$4200.00} ) and a private loan from AIT ( {$3300.00} ). On XX/XX/2017, I began attending classes. On XX/XX/2017, I decided to stop attending XXXX classes. On that day, I informed the director of training at XXXX of my intent to withdraw and that I would no longer attend classes. At no time did I personally receive any of the proceeds from any of the loans mentioned above. According to the Agreement I signed on XX/XX/2017 ( see attached ), if a student withdraws within the 3rd week of training, the student is only obligated to pay XXXX {$100.00} + 10 % of tuition + Books and Fees. In my case, I withdrew within the 3rd week of training and therefore only expected that I owed XXXX {$1300.00} which is {$100.00} + 10 % of tuition + Books and Fees subtracted from {$9900.00}. Recently, I began receiving notices from Navient and debt collectors for XXXX that I owed collectively {$10000.00} to both for loans used to pay for my attendance at XXXX. Navient claims I am responsible for paying two loans used to pay XXXX for my attendance. The first is a federal student loan in the amount of {$2400.00} ( " Loan 1 '' ) which was taken out in my name by the staff at XXXX, on XX/XX/2017, and the proceeds of that loan were sent to XXXX. The second is a federal student loan in the amount of {$4200.00} ( " Loan 2 '' ) which was taken out in my name by the staff at XXXX, on XX/XX/2017, and the proceeds of that loan were sent to XXXX. The third is a private loan in the amount of {$3300.00} ( " Loan 3 '' ) which was extended to me by XXXX to cover the amount of tuition not covered by the proceeds of the two federal student loans mentioned above. The Agreement states that XXXX, as a result of my withdrawal within the 3rd week of training, was obligated to return 90 % of the federal student loan amounts I was awarded back to the Federal Title IV program. But, they did not. In addition to failing to live up to that part of the Agreement, XXXX also decided to try to collect on Loan 3 even though I did not owe that money either. I admit I owe XXXX and Navient {$1300.00} for the brief period of time I attended XXXX. But, I do not owe XXXX or Navient any more than that. Had XXXX returned 90 % of the amount of federal student aid I was awarded ( {$6000.00} ) back to the Title IV program, I would not owe Navient the {$6600.00} they are claiming but only owe {$660.00} to Navient. Also, had Navient fulfilled their obligations under the Agreement, I would only owe them {$680.00} for Loan 3 and not the {$3300.00} they claim. In summary, I only owe {$1300.00} for my attendance at XXXX. In the XXXX, if a student withdraws within the 3rd week, that student is only obligated to pay XXXX {$100.00} + 10 % of tuition + Books and Fees. In my case, that means I only owe {$1300.00} which is 10 % of {$9900.00}, the total amount of the program. {$660.00} of that {$1300.00} is owed to Navient per the terms of the Agreement. Of that {$1300.00} I owe, {$660.00} is owed to Navient because the Agreement states withdrawal within the 3rd week means that of all the federal aid received ( {$6600.00} ), 90 % of that amount ( {$6000.00} ) is unearned and must be returned to the Title IV program. The remaining 10 % of the amount of federal aid received ( {$660.00} ) must be paid to Navient by myself, not by XXXX. {$680.00} of that {$1300.00} is owed to XXXX per the terms of the Agreement. I'm contractually obligated to pay {$660.00} to Navient as outlined above. Of the {$1300.00} I actually owe for my attendance at XXXX, I therefore only owe XXXX {$680.00}, not the {$3300.00} they claim I owe. Had Navient returned the federal aid money to the government as they were supposed to, only a fraction of the current debt appearing on my credit report would be there. XXXX has breached the Agreement we have and has caused me damages. Additionally, XXXX has failed to follow Federal laws regulating the return of unearned student loan proceeds for a withdrawn student.

Trouble with how payments are being handled
Complaint: I made attempts in the past to have a payment plan. I then called XXXX of 2018 to do a income based repayment plan. I filled out the application and included pay stubs as they requested and fax it in. I received a letter stating That they had received my application and documents by mail. I have been waiting since then to get a reply on what happened to the income-based payment plan and received nothing. I called today and the agent on the phone told me that they were only sending me a balance due notices and other notices by mail and that the denial letter was never mailed out to me it was only available online. This seems very fraudulent to me because every other notice was sent by mail other than this one notice. It seems as if Navient Purposefully did not send me that notice by mail. This seems illegal if every other notice was sent by mail other than this. When I asked for a summary of my account to be mailed to me with all the information they refused over the phone. Why would anyone want to pay back loans when it seems like Fraud is involved on the side of the lender.

Complaint: I have loans with Navient and XXXX which Ive been trying to solve since last year. I have wanted to come to a resolution with my loans but unfortunately someone has filed a class action lawsuit which wont allow me to touch my loans. I cant even pay on them. They have been on my credit report since 2004. They should not be on my credit report after 7 years. I know students who took loans with me in the same year and had the same status as my loan currently is, yet their loans have been removed from their credit report because of the time passed. Please have these loans removed from my credit report. Thank you

Trouble with how payments are being handled
Complaint: I began working on another degree in late XXXX. Something about this enrollment and information received by Navient from the school caused Navient to put my loans into deferment without consulting me first. I contacted Navient and instructed them that I had not requested this change and that I did not want my loans in deferment. I requested that my loans be restored to the same terms as before since I had not requested this deferment. I wanted my payments to remain the same and I wanted my principal to interest ratio to stay the same. They assured me that this would not be an issue. They, however, reduced my payments from {$440.00} to {$370.00} which is essentially extending the length of my loan. My principal to interest ratio also changed. Previously, approximately 28 % of my payment was going towards interest. Now, 40 % of my payment is going to interest. I contacted Navient in XXXX and was told, in writing, that my payments would be restored for the XXXX payment. They were not. I contacted them again once I got my monthly notification for the automatic withdrawal and it did not reflect the change. I was told that it was too close to the date and that I would have to call and request this again after XX/XX/XXXX. I called again and was told that the issue needed to be escalated and that they would get back to me in a few days. It has been a few weeks and I have not heard anything. The XXXX payment came out at the reduced rate and I can see on their website that the XXXX payment is scheduled to do the same. I have reached out to Navient several times regarding this issue and can not seem to get this settled on my own. After several attempts, I do believe this is a deliberate act that needs to be investigated by a higher authority.

Trouble with how payments are being handled
Complaint: Navient, years ago, had contacted me about consolidating my loans. I did so with them, but they still appear to be charged interest on BOTH loans separately. Not only that, but they convinced me to go into forbearance at the beginning, so I had several years of not paying the loan without accruing interest. However, once I started repaying the loan, the interest came into play with a vengeance, and turned my {$10000.00} ( approx. ) worth of owed money into almost {$15000.00}! I began paying Navient in XX/XX/2017, and had made a significant amount of payments on the loan and the interest ... or so I thought. After over two years of consistent and costly payments -- ie. paying more than the required monthly amount for more than a year -- I still have over {$12000.00} owed. I have attached the report of my payments per the life of my loan as something is not adding up and I believe Navient is not using my payments to actually pay off the loan or the interest I originally accrued.
