Complaint: Discover bank requires a SSN to open a checking account and does not allow the use of an ITIN. Spoke to multiple agents who all said that I simply would not be able to open a checking account ( despite having a credit card and savings with them ).
It also states on the bottom of the application that they need either of the XXXX, not necessarily a SSN : " Important Information To help the government fight the funding of terrorism and money laundering activities, federal law requires financial institutions to obtain, verify and record information that identifies each individual and entity that opens an account.

Having problems with customer service
Complaint: Hello, My student loans were originally serviced by XXXX but were sold to Discover Student Loans a few years ago. On my original promissory note, it states that I could have my cosigners removed for loans XXXX and XXXX after 48 on time payments. Today, I am beyond the 48 payments. I contacted Discover a few months ago and they sent me the cosigner release form. I filled it out and set it back to them over 30 days ago. On their letter, one of there statements says, you should hear something within 30 days. Well, it has been beyond 30 days and I still have n't heard anything. I contacted them a week ago, and they said, just give it the time that is needed. There was no mention when I would receive official word or even if my cosigners are released.
Two years ago, I had XXXX loan out with them and successfully got my cosigners released after XXXX payments. But, they were doing the same thing like they are now, and I had to file a complaint to inquire what they were doing and why they were stalling.
For the year of 2015, I have paid discover a total of XXXX dollars. On top of that, I have paid XXXX dollars in interest. My gross income for the year of 2015 is XXXX. My credit score as of today is XXXX. I could come to XXXX instances why it is taking beyond 30 days to respond to my submission of the cosigner release form, it is either because someone is being lazy over there or it is being done purposely, so that they can continue to stretch this out, like they did two years ago and hope that I will give up on my cosigner release. However, they are violating the stipulations in the promissory note. By the way, when I submitted the cosigner release form, I included several pay stubs, so they have all the information they need.

Trouble with how payments are handled
Complaint: I used Discover Student Loans to take out a bar loan to sign-up for a bar prep course. I have been making monthly, on-time payments on the loan for over 2 years. The balance of the loan has actually gone up rather than going down, as one would suppose would happen. After researching the issue, I realized that Discover 's minimum payment amount was broken down in such a way as to ensure that the interest will always be XXXX times higher than the principal - high enough to ensure that the balance of the loan remained the same or slightly ticked up through the duration of the " repayment '', thus ensuring that the loan would never be paid off by simply applying minimum payments. All of this means that at 7 % interest, if one were to pay off the loan by making double monthly payments, that I would pay double the amount of the loan, and that Discover would make a 100 % profit on a loan that is at 7 %.
This practice is beyond the pale of decency and is incredibly unethical. These are effectively usury loan terms and your agency needs to become involved in making sure that individuals who are simply trying to better themselves and do n't have parents or others to contribute to their education are not left " holding the bag '' because financial services companies are allowed to exploit their dominant market positions.
I would be more than happy to discuss my case with a member of your agency.
Thank you, XXXX XXXX Tel. XXXX

Complaint: Discover Financial Services ( DFS ) utilized deceptive advertising to promote the use of XXXX with their Discover Card product and is not honoring payments promised to customers including myself.
DFS issued a press release promising 10 % cash back on all XXXX transactions conducted with a Discover card from XXXX. htttp XXXX After the promotion started DFS posted updated the terms and conditions on XXXX/XXXX/15 which specifically excluded the purchase of gift cards related to this promotion. Starting around XXXX/XXXX/15, after utilizing XXXX for a multitude of transactions I began receiving automated e-mails from DFS, specifically XXXXXXXXXXXX, claiming I had purchased gift cards on certain transactions and requiring me to submit receipts in order to receive the previously promised cash back. DFS me advised to contact the merchant and/or DFS would contact them on my behalf. The requirement to retain receipts was never mentioned in either the initial press release or any updated terms and conditions on DFS related websites and I had not retained any receipts which I could provide DFS.
I e-mailed the above listed e-mail address advising that I did not have receipts for the various transactions/merchants they were questioning and was unable to obtain them for the merchant. Only XXXX detailed receipt was obtained by DFS for {$410.00} on XXXX/XXXX/15 from XXXX. After I began receiving receipt requests I began keeping all my XXXX receipts, though not required by DFS ' stated terms and conditions.
I am requesting DFS honor all my other XXXX Pay transactions and provide an accounting for the payments they promised.

Complaint: During the months of XX/XX/XXXX and XX/XX/2015, {$720.00} in cash advances were made via XXXX XXXX, with my Discover card. I was charged {$10.00} per transaction making the total XXXX. These transactions were made nine times. These were not authorized by me.
I am set up for fraud alerts but I was not alerted to what was happening and so I was unable to stop the transactions. But for their failure to provide fraud protection as promised I would not have this charge on my account.
If these suspicious transactions do not trigger a fraud alert, then what does.
I have written to the company many, many times and have not received one written reply.
Curiously, when I signed up on XXXX I got a fraud alert! That 's so funny! So I called them and while I had them on the phone I asked about the cash advances and they said that since my son made them that they are not liable. I was shocked. My son was not authorized to make those advances. What gives them the right to say that he is authorized to do so?
In any case, their fraud alert did not work as promised. I should n't have to pay the fraudulent charges. Thank-you. XXXX XXXX

Complaint: I was offered a promotion to open a checking account with Discover Bank. I had to meet a requirement to earn this promotion. The details were clear on my account application. I decided to open the account. I set up direct deposit with my employer and this has been ongoing. The requirement to earn the account promotional bonus was to set up direct deposit totaling at least {$500.00} within the first 90 days. Discover Bank received the second direct deposit on XXXX XXXX, 2015 that put me over {$500.00} in total direct deposits. This account was opened on XXXX XXXX, 2015. The details of the promotion/contract that I accepted was that the promotional bonus would be credited to my Discover checking account within 30 days. I continued to monitor the status of this promotion leading up to XXXX/XXXX/15 and had been assured both in writing and verbally that I had met the requirements of the promotion and that my bonus would post on or before XXXX/XXXX/15. The bonus did not post to my account on XXXX/XXXX/15 and I waited a few business days and then called Discover Bank once again, and contacted them in writing. Discover Bank has refused to credit the bonus to my account. I have fulfilled the terms of our agreement and am asking that this bonus be posted to my checking account.

Attempted to collect wrong amount
Complaint: I received a letter by mail on XXXX XXXX 2015, stating that I owed Discover XXXX. I do n't know why it went into collections, since I was making payments to Discover. After I read the letter saying that my payments were to be XXXX dollars a month I concurred. I started making payments immediately. I paid XXXX dollars in XXXX, XXXX in XXXX, XXXX in XXXX, XXXX in XXXX and XXXX in XXXX. Then I get a call from XXXX stating that my bank account had insufficient funds, which is not true I replied. They said that they spoke with the banks representitive and when I asked them if they have a confirmation number from that bank they said yes and read a false confirmation number because the number was from my receipt of payment that I had made to them. We hung up and I called my bank and asked them if they got a call from XXXX and they said that there was no record of them in the system for calling. I told the bank what the law firm said and they said that I do have sufficient funds for the payments I made, but that there is no record of a charge on my account. When I tried calling the law firm back they did n't pick up the phone and I did call several times that day. I then filed a complaint with the FTC. Then i received XXXX letters from XXXX stating to pay the full balance of XXXX. So then I thougt oh they took out at least XXXX from my account. But when i checked they did not. So I went to the website " XXXX '' to make a payment, but the website gave me a different amount XXXX I need help. I want to pay my debts but this law firm is making it very difficult as they are lying to me. I am a very honest person and respect the law., but This firm seems to be a little dishonest.

Complaint: I have been a Discover card member since 2011 and have never had an issue with services until recently. Noticed an email message sent to me XX/XX/XXXX that a transaction had been declined due to insufficient credit line to cover the cost. After checking into the issue further, discovered that I had been twice XX/XX/XXXX and once XX/XX/XXXX for a product I did not order, want or receive. Amounts were approx. at XXXX ; XXXX and XXXX. The charges were from a merchant I had ordered samples from XX/XX/XXXX, needing to pay only shipping and handling. I did not want or order anything else. I filed formal disputes with Discover and eventually had " temporary credits '' applied to my account, with the understanding that if the dispute was not resolved in my favor following investigation, the credits would be reversed. During this time, I had several conversations and " secure messages '' with Discover customer service reps. Each rep had a different response and direction for me to take. I ended up contacting the merchant myself and received confirmation from a rep of the merchant both verbally and by email that my " account would be cancelled along with any further orders. Also, my " payment source '' - Discover, would be receiving a refund for the amounts in question. Finally, after many hours spent on trying to resolve issue on my own, the credits were made to my account. When my XX/XX/XXXX status was updated, Discover had " removed the temporary credit, and added back on the XXXX because the merchant had issued me a credit for the amount.. ''. I did not receive a refund from the merchant, and because the dispute was resolved in my favor, it is my understanding that the issue had been resolved. Each incorrect charge had been credited to my account, and I did not expect to be billed back the charge oif XXXX because the merchant indicated that my payment soiurce would receive the refund. I do not believe I should be getting charged again for something that had been resolved in my favor. I have not been refunded twice for any amount, though this seems to be Discover 's position of the issue. I have tried resolving the problem with Discover secure messages and by " live chat ''. The chats are always discontinued after I take the time to try and explain my position and the time I continue to use to resolve the problem is wasted. I did explain that I would be taking this step if my issue was n't resolved but the charge back remains taken from my available credit. It is also worth noting that in XX/XX/XXXX just prior to XXXX I had an unexpected death In my family and I phoned Discover to ask about where I could get a cash advance. I was referreed to banks that Discover does n't use and I was not only embarrassed in public, but was also left to be on my own to find somewhere to go. to obtain cash.. When I called for assistance and to express my dissatisfaction, it was suggested that I look into requesting a credit line increase to assist with getting some additional help with cash needed at the time. I explained that I thought such a request would be too early since I received XXXX automatic increases within past six months. XX/XX/XXXX would be okay to obtain another increase, so I did so. When I completed my request, a message came up that said I would be notified beforehand if a credit inquiry would be needed. I never was notified that such action would be needed, but my request was denied so this would result in my credit score taking a hit. I would never have pursued with my request for an increase if I had known this would be needed - especially after the XXXX automatic increases without my requesting them. I am not being treated fairly here in more than one instance, and most recently the charge being added back on my account because merchant had made a refund already???

Trouble with how payments are handled
Complaint: My daughter is not able to pay on loans that Discover claims that we ( my husband and I ) cosigned with XXXX and were then purchased by Discover. I have contacted XXXX, and they can not help me other than to state that it was once very easy for the student to respond to an email and you were then the cosigner, but steps have been taken in the past five or more years to ensure that the cosigner does know and is willingly cosigning. There is no evidence of our signatures on any documentation, only the printed words " electronically signed ''.
My daughter defaulted on XXXX loans for which my husband is listed as the cosigner, which is ruining his credit, and we were never notified. We found out after it was already in default because of a credit check. Discover claims that they did not have to notify him because telling the cosigner is " only a courtesy '' and they are not required to do so.
My daughter admits that she just responded to an email that listed us as the cosigner but did n't realize that she was doing anything wrong because she was following XXXX 's instruction. She does not make enough money to pay back her loans and still survive ( XXXX a month payments on XXXX loans ) and Discover does not consolidate. She tried to consolidate them through a bank but because of the default no one will help her and every time a bank runs an inquiry her score drops even further.
No one will help us. I 'm being forced to make the payments on the XXXX loans where I am listed as cosigner just to keep decent credit. Discover has a policy that if six payments are made on time that the cosigner can be released, but only if the student has good credit, and that is likely not going to happen quickly. No one at Discover will even talk to my husband about the XXXX loans that defaulted. They can ruin his credit but not talk to him. It 's ridiculous.
