Struggling to repay your loan

Student loan: Federal student loan servicing

Problem lowering your monthly payments
Complaint: I have a total of 5 loans. Two are in my now deceased mother and my name, One is just in my name, and two others are in my father and my name. Since my mothers death we contacted Salle Mae and asked about if there could be in reduction due to not having an income to support the loans initially made. The total student loan debt originally was over 150k. They told us no, the did lower the interest rate for a period but what we missed was while we paid the lower interest rate they added the difference in rate to the balance. As you can imagine, that was not helpful. Since we realized they were doing this we went back to the standard rate but in order to pay these loans I have to have my father pay two of them himself because I can not afford all 5. My father is ready to retire and this over {$800.00} a month payment is extremely difficult and puts a strain on our relationship and pressure to me. He will be on a fixed income and straddled paying my debts and debts acquired when my mother and he were financially separated because I can not afford the payments on my own. When we contacted SallieMae on her death the only consideration was to remove her name from the loans and make me fully responsible ... that was not helpful. They offered no reduction and again only a temporary interest rate reduction that only added to the outstanding balance. Which I felt was pretty shady. I looked to refinance the loans but because they are SallieMae they are not eligible to due so. I am left with a HUGE debt that I will be saddled with for several decades if not longer. They really offer no solution that is doable to reduce these costs and I am at my wits end trying to keep up with the payments. These loans and the costs of them were not laid out properly to me when I was in school and I had no idea of the amount of debt and time to pay this off would be. In addition, the death of my mother whos income was over 100k prior to her death has added additional stress. SallieMae has made no solution available that does not just add to the balance and continued repayment term.

Trouble with how payments are being handled
Complaint: On my sallie mae account it only goes as far as XX/XX/XXXX. When i first started my payments were under 180 dollars. On XX/XX/XXXX my loan states i am now paying XXXX. I had a late charge or XXXX because i did not have the money in my account. On XX/XX/XXXX it was XXXX on XX/XX/XXXX my interest went up XXXX. On XX/XX/XXXX my bill became XXXX. On XX/XX/XXXX i had gone through a major hurricane. I had late payments from being out of a job during the hurricane, when i called multiple times i kept getting the ring around. I would call about their hurricane assistance they posted on their site. I would be told they need to check if it was available for me call back in a week. I would wait 2 weeks. I called 4 times and on the 4th time i was told about a forbearance that would bring my late charges down to XXXX, i had to set my bill on autopay for until XX/XX/XXXX if i missed an auto pay date my over 800 dollar bill would restart and i would owe that 800 somthing dollar bill again. Any time i could not make my bill because it was so high and had late charges i would call and they each time gave me a ring around my problems were never solved. XX/XX/XXXX i had accured interest or XXXX. On XX/XX/XXXX on my document it says amount XXXX, interest ( XXXX ), principle ( XXXX ) each month the interest fluctuates either going up or down. Multiple times this company has not omce helped me out especially after hurricane Micheal that caused me to lose my home and everything. I had no job for months. Currently as of XX/XX/XXXX i owed XXXX, interest ( XXXX ) principle ( XXXX ). XX/XX/XXXX i accured an interest or XXXX. I do not understand why im being charged so much when i can barely make the payments somtimes, and their customer care is no help AT ALL.

Student loan: Private student loan

Can't get other flexible options for repaying your loan
Complaint: I have called Sallie Mae 3 times within 6 months about getting my loan repayment lowered and extended longer. They said no that I have to pay {$360.00} every month. I wanted to get it lowered to like {$150.00} a month because I can't pay {$360.00} a month. They said if I didnt make the payment by the due date collections would call me and give me more options. Sallie Mae told me they would work woith me on my payments and they say have been Helping American Students for decades. That's false advertising because they don't help at all, they rip us off and tell us false information.

Can't temporarily delay making payments
Complaint: on XX/XX/2019 I called in to Sallie Mae to continue my Forbearance with them and to pay on a loan that was due for {$120.00}. I asked the representative why the amount is higher than what i was told at the beginning of the month. She then continued to ask how i would like to make the payment. I Advised that i was told i only owed the XXXX not the XXXX they are trying to say. The representative then told me " she's not doing this back and forth thing with me and she is just trying to do her job '' I advised i didn't need her attitude and that i am asking her why my payments are higher than previously stated. She continued being very rude and transferred me to a manager who continued being just as rude to me. Their customer service is completely disrespectful and need to be held accountable for their disgusting actions.

Received bad information about your loan
Complaint: On XX/XX/2019 I applied for a program with SALLIE MAE to lower the payments of my student loans due to changes in life circumstances. They told me I would make three qualifying payments of {$32.00} for three months and then qualify for the program. The next month, I get notice that my loan is delinquent and will be reported to the credit agencies. When speaking to a representative, I was told that they made a mistake and that the qualifying payments should have been {$50.00} for three months to qualify, so I made arrangements to pay the difference on XX/XX/2019. Then I was told that my loan actually didnt qualify for the program and then I was told that I could do three qualifying payments to tack them on to the end of my loan so I wouldnt be delinquent, even though I wasnt delinquent and had followed all the details of the plan they put in place. I was affected by the hurricane that caused us to evacuate, so XX/XX/2019 was granted a hurricane/ disaster forbearance. XX/XX/XXXX the dented {$120.00} from my account from the last plan they had put me on, even though I was on forbearance and told nothing was due. They refunded the money, but when they did it canceled my qualifying payment and put my account as delinquent, even though I was told the forbearance wouldnt affect this plan I was forced into because of their mistake. Sallie Mae has deceptive practices. As a teacher is would be nice if the public service forgiveness was eligible for these loans.

Complaint: I try to call Sallie Mae to resolve my son 's past due student loan and the representative that took the call was threatening, rude and disrespectful. I asked to worked out a smaller payment and she treated me like I was the lowest scum of the earth and yelled at me. I really do not want to speak with any of them anymore because of the way I was treated. Sallie Mae contacted relatives in a different state and secretaries in my office to obtain my personal information. They left voicemails, spoke with our secretaries, and faxed my employer. They call continuously and don't have any respect of boundaries. This is harassment and it needs to stop!

Struggling to repay your loan

Student loan: Private student loan

Can't get other flexible options for repaying your loan
Complaint: Sallie Mae calls me several times a day to collect a past due amount. I have asked if they can work with me by enrolling me into an Income-Driven Repayment schedule, similar to XXXX and XXXX They informed me Sallie Mae is a private company and does not offer this option. Ok, I understand this. However, they collected {$150.00} a month from me for several months as a " good faith payment ''. They led me to believe this payment was going towards my loan amounts. It was not. It was simply a fee to keep Sallie Mae from reporting my loan to the credit rating bureaus. Once I found out this fact, I stopped making the payments. My total due each month is close to {$700.00}. I asked again if they can lower payments. They informed me they could lower the payments to {$350.00}. I told them this was not feasible for me. They threatened to report me to the credit bureau and destroy my credit. In the meantime, they have raised the interest rate on my loan to 10 %. They have called my parents several times. Today, on XX/XX/XXXX they called my parents home again. I called Sallie Mae and asked them to stop calling my parents, they are NOT cosigners on the loan and therefore they should not be involved in their attempts to collect a debt from me. Sallie Mae informed me they use a " phone book '' service to reach out to people with similar names if I am not answering the phone. I speak with Sallie Mae at least three times a week and each time I tell them I can not make payments at this time due to financial hardship. They have no right to call my parents. They have called my business partner as well which was very embarrassing and could have cost me my livelihood. I am currently working with a debt relief company to settle this account and have asked Sallie Mae to stop calling my parents. They refuse and I think this is total harassment and bullying. I understand I owe this debt. I received a loan for my education and it needs to be paid. However, I do not need to be bullied. I do not need to be harassed several times a day with a phone call from Sallie Mae, and I do not need my parents and business partner receiving these phone calls as well. ESPECIALLY when I speak with a customer service rep from Sallie Mae several times a week. Thank you.

Can't get other flexible options for repaying your loan
Complaint: XX/XX/XXXX I initially began to attend the Illinois XXXX XXXX XXXX- XXXX , being mostly funded by Sallie Mae . XXXX- Sallie Mae denied by request for the XXXX year of school tuition. I had no family help ( they made too much $ for me to get federal aid through FAFSA ) and had to withdraw from school. XXXX Now being XXXX, I was eligible to sign up for FAFSA without inputting my family info. XXXX The school lost its accreditation status. Being an art school most classes will not transfer. I reached out to Sallie Mae repeatedly letting them know the school has closed and I was unable to get my degree. Also brought to their attention that if they had let me know before I enrolled in school that I would not be approved for tuition for 4 years, I would not have enrolled where I did. On XX/XX/XXXX I officially withdrew from the school due to major lack of credit transfer options. I am in the process of getting my federal loans cancelled as the school closed, and working on joining a class action suit regarding the deceptive practices of the school. I have no degree from the school, no job to make SallieMae payments and want SallieMae to do the right thing and forgive the loans like the federal ones will be forgiven.

Communication tactics

Debt collection: Private student loan debt

Frequent or repeated calls
Complaint: My husband has been out of work for over a year, dealing with XXXX XXXX XXXX has had two XXXX and heading for another. His salary use to be around 6,500 monthly and mine is only $ XXXX monthly. So we've had a huge financial crises. We have two issues, one being that Sallie Mae has been abusing there repeat calling over and over to my phone, my church, my neighbors, my job, my husband ( he cosigned ) his cell phone and my children 's phones. You should subpoena full and complete phone call data, not only the calls dialed by the representatives, their dialer and robot calls. Accordance with federal or private loan laws these tactics are very, very unacceptable and should not continue, The higher education act along with the consumer protection act on abuse student loan harsh tactics on folks like Sallie Mae My husband called in XXXX and got everything setup on two more for automatic withdraw, it was agreed that the payments would start in XXXX on the XXXX. I called them in XXXX as the payments hadn't run on the account. I was advised that the loans were in a deferment and no payments are due at this time. The telephone calls started in later XXXX left a message and I returned the call. In the call the representative indicated that the account was in a deferment so there was nothing due. I got another call in XXXX about than 15 days so this time my husband called and the representative indicated that there was nothing due. I asked her then why are they calling then, there has to be a purpose and she gave the balance information on the account and no payment was due. but then she started reading a script about bankruptcy and that no collection activity. I inquired if there was anything due and the lady kept repeating. Now in XXXX we start getting at least 10 calls at home, my job and my church and my neighbors are bringing notes over that they are calling them. Her messages are a little disturbing as details are being provided over the phone on verbal messages on a machine and with live receptionist. Ms XXXX XXXX ( extension XXXX ) indicates that she has been calling all month no return calls. She is leaving extensive messages stressing urgent matters at my job stating that she is running out of time My husband returns the call yesterday and the lady indicates that the loans are 90 days past due and {$900.00} she was very rude, talked over me trying to scare him that XXXX was due in full, she could setup options to pay default was mentioned. He explained that there was nothing we could do this month, probably start next month. He explained that the call in XXXX where the representative indicated that the loans were not in repayment and nothing was due on recording. I also indicated that he could provide details on the call yesterday XXXX where Ms XXXX XXXX wouldn't help him and that if the loans would default that he would go to court and get a default reversal because Sallie Mae she was being recorded. She indicated that she is not giving him permission to record the call and she would not discuss the call further would not make arrangements and she was disconnecting the call. Ms XXXX XXXX would not help us setup arrangements. He advised them I wanted no more calls to my job, I am not allowed to receive calls at work and could loose my job.

Received bad information about your loan
Complaint: My student loan has been in the deferred status since I am currently back in graduate school. Recently, I got notified that my loan is $ 600+ PAST DUE. I believe that I have " used up '' all my deferred time ( 60 months ) and that my loan is to be start paying back however, there has been NO communication on due dates and repayment plans despite mulitple calls to the company. I am trying to lower my monthly payment, and get my cosigner OFF the loan. I have applied 3-4 time to get my cosigner released with NO explanation as to why and how I can get him off. I have paid 12 months worth of monthly payments to them in a lump sum with no results. I have asked about the income driven repayment plan and keep getting denied. There is NO communication to when my loans are due. When i log onto my student portal it says my loan is DUE XX/XX/19. The start of my repayment yet I am already $ 600+ PAST DUE? IT MAKES NO SENSE. I have tried diligently to work with this company and we have reached no resolve. How do you expect timely payments when you don't inform your customers? You are setting us up for failure.

Struggling to repay your loan

Student loan: Private student loan

Can't get other flexible options for repaying your loan
Complaint: This issue all began when SallieMae stopped auto charging my bank account without notifying me. At this point in time, I was diligently making on-time payments ( while in school as they wouldn't allow me deferment ) so I did not realize that the company stopped charging my account until this happened. When I noticed after two months that SallieMae wasn't charging my account, I called them to discuss this issue. Immediately the response I received was negative. The man I spoke with told me that I was in delinquency for months, despite never receiving notice about it. Additionally, he demanded I pay the full amount or I was to be sent to collections. I told him that I couldn't pay the full amount upfront as it was over {$9000.00}. I told them that I would like to stick to my original payment plan, as I will make the continued payments. He became rude and aggressive and wouldn't listen to me. At this point, my father 's credit was affected and now is horrible as he is my cosigner. I am willing to pay this loan, I just can't pay the full amount. I called several times, but the woman I was speaking to XXXX XXXX ( XXXX ) and at first she told me she would help me with arranging a payment plan, this call was today, XX/XX/23 at XXXX XXXX but I need my father present, at the time he was at physical therapy. I called back at XX/XX/23 XXXX XXXX with my father present and suddenly she told me that I couldn't do the payment plan, and I had to pay {$5000.00}. When we notified her that we couldn't pay that amount on such little notice, she became rude and abrasive and tried to hang up on me without continuing the conversation. This left me feeling dejected and alone in my situation. At this point, I asked for the collection departments number so I can speak to them directly and she wouldn't provide me with any information in regards to them. I am very willing to pay off the amount but I need to do it in monthly increments.
