Frequent or repeated calls
Complaint: I was contacted twice by Great Lakes Student L oans in XXXX XXXX XXXX . I can not remember the dates and times, but have contacted my company 's phone provider to provide these to me, along with the duration of the calls. I was told I would have this information soon, but have yet to receive it. On these events, I was asked to be identified by the caller, and they requested my social security number. On one phone call, I did provide my personal information, even though I told the woman on the phone that I do not provide personal information to non-solicited calls. I calmly and politely asked for her business 's mailing address. She refused to provide that information. I asked her repeatedly in a calm, patient manner, " what is the mailing address for your company? '' She instead began to berate me by telling me that I owed money to her company and she insinuated that she would deface me by contacting the references I provided on the loan. She refused to provide me her mailing address. After several minutes of her asking questions, and my insistence, she started to state her employer 's address. Then, as I was struggling to grab a writing utensil and piece of paper, she mistook the noise of the headset on my landline telephone to be noise or interference. This was a landline phone, of which there is extremely little noise or interference. At that point, she told me that she would no longer provide the address and promptly hung up the phone. She told me that if I would not take her seriously, she would hang up. I did not use profanity or attempt to upset the woman that called me. I simply asked for the mailing address. She refused to provide it. It is my understanding that any debt collector who is attempting to contact a customer by phone is required to provide a mailing address, if requested. I requested the mailing address, and the woman on the phone did not provide it. In fact, she took every possible measure in her power to not disclose it. She first evaded the request and also suggested to humiliate me and expose my financial issues to my references. Then she begrudgingly attempted to provide the information and found an excuse to end the conversation before providing it by telling my that the connection was not strong and took that excuse to end the conversation. On a another phone call from the same company, I answered the call, the woman greeted me and asked for personal information. I told her I could not provide my social security number or date of birth over the phone from unsolicited calls. I asked her for a call back number and she obliged. When I called the number and provided the extension she provided, I was connected and she asked for my name, and I provided it. She then asked for my personal information and then I asked her if I could record our conversation. She told me that she did not know if that would be allowed. I asked her if our conversation was already being recorded by her company. She informed me that it was. I asked her if those recordings were public record or could be requested, if asked. She told me she did not know if they could be requested and then put me on hold to speak with he r manager. Once we reconnected, she asked me to " have a nice day, sir '' and hung up the phone.
I have made two attempts for information on the debt that I owe and still have no mailing address to send letters requesting more information. I ha ve attempted to record these conversations and was denied. I do not understand what I have done wrong. What should be my next step?

Talked to a third-party about your debt
Complaint: Student loan reference # XXXX Principal : XXXX Interest : XXXX Collection Fees : XXXX Total Due : XXXX Violations of consumer rights : 1 ) Inv asion of privacy by using social media accounts to identify persons and organizations connected to the debtor, an d 2 ) I ndependently contacting those persons and organizations, requesting private information about debtor and the organizations. These XXXX behaviors are a direct threat to the debtors ability to professionally network and move towards viable employment. [ BEGIN COMPLAINT ] My student loan, serviced by " Great Lakes Higher Education Guaranty Corporation '' is in default due to an inability to make regular payments, due to challenges related to homelessness and unemployment. On Monday, XXXX XXXX , the apparent collections agency, " XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX '', contacted at least XXXX organizations that I have been engaged with in the last 8 months. In their communications, they identified themselves as a law firm requesting employment verification. They asked each organization for information not related to me, such as EIN and information about the organization 's whereabout s. One of t he organizations is a nonprofit organization I volunteer for, the other a company that I have taken sporadic interim projects for as a contractor. Neither organization employed me. I have not been employed since XXXX XXXX , XXXX . I notified XXXX . XXXX XXXX XXXX that they were violating my privacy and my rights pursuant to the FDCPA. In response, I received a secure email from XXXX . XXXX asking if I would communicate with " XXXX XXXX or another representative ''. I replied the same day that I would be happy to speak with anyone other than XXXX XXXX , who is the collections agent that invaded my privacy to begin with by contacting organizations listed in my XXXX profile, and as long as I would not be inappropriately threatened. I received no response to my offer to communicate. Then on XXXX XXXX , XXXX , I received a letter from XXXX . XXXX stating that they would commence wage withholding from my " employer '', listing the company that most recently contracted me on an interim consulting project. On XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX issued a " Notice Prior To Wage Whithholding '' that lists, despite knowledge to the contrary, a company that does not employ me as my employer. The contents of this notice are standard and legally binding, however the persistence in communicating with a third party that is not my employer with a debt-related communication ( in this place a wage garnishment letter ) constitutes ongoing harassment and a 2nd communication, specifically violating rules associated with 3rd party communications as stated in 15 U.S. Code 1692c of the FDCPA. Furthermore the situation is aggravated by a failure on the part of XXXX . XXXX XXXX XXXX to respect the communicated issues related to this debt : 1 ) That I have been discharged from employment in the last 12 months 2 ) That I was legally homeless in the last 12 months and own no assets including vehicle 3 ) T hat I would be willing to make a smaller payment, but not sign into a legally binding payment agreement while unable to certify regular income 4 ) That I have been denied unemployment benefits by the State of North Carolina and have evidence of this denial Since XXXX of XXXX , when I was terminated by my last employer, I have been working odd jobs and contract work while seeking employment again. By using social media to identify organizations I have volunteered for and completed interim contract work for, and then repeatedly contacting those organizations knowing that neither is an employer, XXXX . Can't get other flexible options for repaying your loan
Complaint: To Whom It May Concern : I am not writing to dispute the accuracy of the way my loan or the payments of the loan have been calculated, rather the appalling results of how the account 100 % benefits the lender and leaving the consumer ( me ) treated extremely unfairly. Below is an explanation of why I feel this way. I finished my school education in XXXX and shortly after consolidated my student loans with Great Lakes Borrower Services. At that time my balance was {$68000.00} and today ( nearly 12 years later ) my balance is {$76000.00}. You would think I have not made any payments and the result of that is fees Etc. increasing my total loan amount, but that is far from the case. My first few years out of college I did struggle to find a decent paying job that would allow me to make payments on my account but I did what I could and asked for deferments when I knew I just could not make the payments. I asked for assistance on the loan amount, but none was ever offered nor provided so I would have to defer my payments until I felt I could start paying again. At times I would pay small amounts just to make some sort of payment. Whenever I came into a bit of money I would try and make larger payments to also reduce the loan amount. I finally was able to get on my feet and start working a decent paying steady job and making my payments every single month so here is my main complaint. I have not paid very close attention to my loan balance since I knew I had to pay on it a while, but recently looked at what I currently owe and I about had a XXXX XXXX . Over the course of my loan I have paid {$31000.00}, but STILL ow e {$76000.00} on a {$68000.00} loan! Seriously! I did some research on my account and notice that out of the {$31000.00} only {$1700.00} has gone towards my principle! Also, during the time I kept expressing concerns about not working and trying so very hard to pay what I could I was hit with thousands in interest charges! So somehow I have paid bac k ~45 % of my loan, but still owe ~110 % of the loan! How is this even legal? At this point I am not even sure paying the loan is worth it or even an option since the more I pay the more I owe. I understand the concept of borrowing and paying interest, but the way this whole thing has worked out it seems like this is taking advantage of consumers not only when they are at their worst, but also at their best. At a minimum I would hope that the institution would waive the {$9500.00} of interest charges they hit me with while I was struggling to work and asking for assistance. I thank you for your time in reviewing my complaint.

Trouble with how payments are being handled
Complaint: I have been in REPAYE ( or something similar for years ). The last two years, Great Lakes Borrowing service has failed to re-enroll me timely in those programs. This despite me providing all necessary information ahead of any deadline ( this year, it waXXXX XXXX XXXX 2017 ).
This year, on or about XXXX XXXX, 2017, I provided my wife 's changed income as well as notice that she would no longer be employed in XX/XX/XXXX. I did this in order to complete my renewal request. At the request of Great lakes, on or around XXXX XXXX, 2017, I provided more documentation to support my income. They confirmed receipt of this documentation, which I also uploaded to their website. Despite my timely application and submission of documentation as requested, Great Lakes is now telling me over 2600 per month is due ; well beyond what should be due under the REPAYE program ( and significantly higher than the 400 or so dollars i was required to pay last year, when making MORE money. Again, my wife is no longer working AND we are also expecting a child / another dependent ). Great Lakes has caused anxiety and distress due to their poor handling of my debt and debt issue. I would like any and all information regarding recourse available please. May i file suit through the CFPB? NOTE 1 : having to put my loans in forbearance costs me money. and I believe I also lose the forbearance option after so much time. Concerning, if I really needed it.
NOTE 2 : Last year, on or around XX/XX/XXXXor XX/XX/XXXX 2017, the same issue occurred.

Trouble with how payments are being handled
Complaint: 1. Wh en I make a payment it takes several days for it to process. 2. By the time it processes, several days of interest have accumulated against the balance the loan was at before the payment was supposed to have posted. 3. G reat Lakes claims to apply my payments to the highest interest earning loan, however, behind the scenes they apply my loans evenly to different tokens, distributing the payment between subsidized and unsubsidized loans. Now, I am enrolled in school part time and eligible for deferment. Had they applied my automatic payments to my unsubsidized loans they would have been gone, now they will accrue interest while I am in school. 4. We are allowed to allocate extra payments how we like but we are not allowed to allocate automatic payments. We have to use automatic payments to save the quarter percent in interest but in doing so we cost ourselves money by giving up the right to allocate to unsubsidized loans.

Trouble with how payments are being handled
Complaint: Student loans were paid ahead for several months ( See below ). Great Lakes refuses to apply the loan payments to the principal loan amounts. We have called and written to no avail. Last year these loans were paid {$6000.00} ahead, but they continue to only apply these to the interest. We have quit paying on the loans since last year since it does no good. Will attach loan statements showing amounts paid ahead and that " Total Amount Due is {$0.00} ''. The only thing that appears feasible is to just default on the loans. This is our last hope. We have been paying on these loans for 10 years. Original loan amounts were {$5000.00} on XXXX and {$10000.00} on XXXX totaling XXXX . Current combined loan balances is {$13000.00}. We are beyond angry and frustrated. This appears to be fraud at its best and stealing at its worst. Need information about your loan balance or loan terms
Complaint: On XXXX / XXXX / XXXX , I contacted Great lake s Borrowing Service to discuss concerns regarding how interest is being applied to my student loans. I have XXXX loans serviced by Great Lakes s Borrowing Service. XXXX balance is at {$20000.00} and the other is a balance of {$9300.00}. My total payment is {$270.00}. I had recently started making a small increase in my payment to {$300.00}. Over the course of 8 payments at {$300.00}, I noticed that my interest was not decreasing, but increasing. When I called to discuss my concern, it was n't until the operator looked further into the matter, when he discovered that my loan was an Adjustable Rate loan. This news was concerning to hear, because I looked on their website for information regarding my interest rate, and there is no information regarding my rate was adjustable. I requested to speak with a supervisor, and the supervisor told me that I should look to my master promissory note for full disclosure. The supervisor said he would make note of my request because he too thought that this information should be listed on the site. My issue is that I had no idea that my loan was an adjustable rate, and I was hardly getting no where with the balance. Please help, I believe that Great Lakes withheld important information regarding my loan being an adjustable rate on their website. Nothing on their website shows when and how the rate adjusts.

As a result, these loans are suppose to be reported on my credit as back in good standing and remove the negative marks. There are XXXX loans that have yet to be cleared from my credit as promised. And these are reported by different servicing agencies because they sell them and pass them around so it looks like there are more loans than there actually is and my negative accounts number are 3 times as many I have called for months and never able to get answers or someone to help me. I will do whatever it takes to get this done. I have completed the program and this business did not do as they stated. it is a scam. I will be consulting an attorney and reaching out to media outlets if this is not fixed..

Can't get other flexible options for repaying your loan
Complaint: I am a consumer credit XXXX working with people with student loans. We currently have two clients we are working with who are being garnished for Federal Student Loans. On the studentloan.gov website, it clearly states that defaulted loans can be consolidated as long as they are placed into an income driven repayment plan. Two former students that we are working with to get their defaulted student loans consolidated were declined by Great Lakes, even though they requested the Income Driven Repayment. Their only options that Great Lakes gave them were not affordable. If defaulted loans can go into a consolidation loan, how does Great Lakes have the authority to deny them? We need clarification on this.

Need information about your loan balance or loan terms
Complaint: I consolidated my student loans in XXXX XXXX . I began repaying my loans in XXXX XXXX . I understand that my payments will apply only to interest until my interest balance is XXXX and then they will apply to principal. The payment history page of XXXX XXXX 's website does not show how change in my interest balance. The payment history shows the date of payment, my total payment, how much of my payment was applied to interest/principal, and then my total principal balance. There is no column to display total interest balance, which would show my interest total decreasing as I make my monthly payments. I have searched the website and the only place where I can see my total interest balance is on the home page, but there is no history option to show me what the interest was before I made my payments, and how the balance has decreased each month. This is disconcerting because, just by looking at the payment history, it is impossible to see how my monthly payments are affecting my overall balance. Great Lakes should include an interest balance column of the payment history chart to clearly show how my payments are applying to interest over time. Otherwise, there is no way for me to verify that my payments are applying correctly and instead I have to just rely that my payments are properly being applied to my interest balance.
